county treasurer's seat after cor-
rectly predicting the largest

nation's history, is now hoping
bis reputation and work record
will catapult him into the· state
treasurer's office.
Moorlach, 41, announced this

for the post that will open when
current state treasurer Matt
Fong makes a senatorial bid.
The main obstacle Moorlach

didacy of state Sen. James
Brulte of Rancho Cucamonga -

told Moorlach he wouldn't run.

Elementary parents breathed a
sigh of relief Tuesday as school
trustees adopted a plan that would
keep their school boundaries intact
and still accommodate third grade
class-size reduction. .
More than 140 parents, many of
them from Mariners, gathered at
the board meeting to support the
new plan and to denounce the dis-
trict's original 'plan to move a group
of Mariners stu~ents to Kaiser Ele-
mentary.

parent who favored the new plan.
The approved plan will change

offender James Lee Crummel has
not only brought neighbors face
to face with a flesh and blood
bogeyman but also bas crystal-
lized fears qthers harbored about
the law from the beginning.

an incident occurred at our last
neighborhood poker game that
gave me pause. I asked the
man sitting next to me -no

people who fired her.
Anyway, trustee Verrengia at
a recent school board meeting
criticized a state senator's plan
to reshape bilingual education
by accusing him of "throwing
dren. But he took issue with the
police aepartment's power to
implement it.
"J·wish a judge had made this

-I'm not necessarily talking
about Crum.me! -who may have
rehabilitated himself. ... They
made (the law} way. way too

Crummel, 53, became the
third Orange County sex offend-
er to have his whereabouts publi-
cized under Megan's Law when
police posted flyers describing
him as a high-risk molester who
preyed on children between the
ages of 9 and 16.
Crummel, who has separate
cgnvictions · in California, Ari-
zona, Wisconsin and MiSsouri, is
still being questioned in connec-
tion with unsolved missing chil-
dren cases, including that of
Jamey Trotter, the 13-year-old
Costa Mesa boy who was found
dead after be vanished off Harbor
Boulevard in 1979.
Crummel also served time for
the death of a 9-year-old Arizona
boy but went free after a judge
threw out the case.

CORONA DEL MAR -Corona del Mar High
baseball coach Joe Kbh stepped down from his
position Tuesday after t.Qree years, deciding he
wants to spend more time with his family.
Both of Koh's children were born just before
the start of the season in 1995 and this year.
"{Having children) has really changed my
pe~pective on a few things," Koh said. "My son
is so impressionable. I just wan\ed to be there by
my wife's side to.set those impressions. The bot-
tom line is, it's hard trying to balance family, a
full-time job, plus I'm active at church and then
coaching baseball, it can be hard.· I've been
working weekends and evenings because of
baseball."
