JA.'-0"' Solft R latl'b NEWPORT BEACH -A faulty pump at the Newport Brewing Co. caused an estimated 50 to 60 gallons of coolant to leak into Newport Harbor early Thurs- day morning. Kirk Roberts, 36. of Trabuco Canyon, the company's brewmaster, said he dis- covered the leak about 8:45 a .m. Thurs- day and alerted authorities. Mr. Do counter.; that. •The city went over-. board.· According to the man who invented the Lobster Hunt, there are studie~ show- ing that lobsters are mcapable of feeling pain. His name? J.R. Kenny assured us that it could not, . illld has not, happened, then had one of those painfully embarrassing moments. The . machine wouldn't work. He tried and tried but it was not to be. He made a quick recovery though, and opened the top panel on the tank so we could check out the mechanical claw. The arms are plastic and, more importantly. don't close com- pletely -so you can never get a tight grip on Shelly and his awkward buddies. · ~. ; •Too bad Shelly doesn'.t : have a 'no claws clause' . ~ ::in his contract. • rr his is a story about the . lobster and the mayor. :• You may have heard · about the lobster a.Irea(ly. I'm not sure what that means, but I suspect it's like.an Animal Control officer, only ' more conciliatory. If a dog is running loose in the street, you don't l!Y to catch 'it so much as tell it you ~ense a loi of hostility and try to get it to open up to ypu. Anyway, the Animal Ser- vices officer is enjoying lunch when someone drops two bucks in the Lobster Hunt and takes off after Shelly. The offi- cer springs into action and issues a cease-and-demt..order, eHective immediately, much to Shelly's relief. For reasons, and reasoning. whicll remain murky, the officer concludes that the game constitutes cruel- ty to animals and threatens Sumo Sushi's owner, Khang Do, with a citation if anyone lays a claw on Shelly again. Mr. Do, a law-abiding man, pulls the plug on the Lobster Hunt, at which point I suspect Shelly is tapping on the side or the tank, giving the Animal Services offi- cer a claw's up, and gurgling "You da' man!· in crustacean. When you go down a lobster's list of "11ungs I Really Hate," being plucked from a farilrwllh plastic tongs ts way down toward the bottom. Whether the plucker is a customer at Sumo Sushi, or the guy }?ehind the fish counter at Von's, is of very litUe consequence to the pluckee. The part where they grab you by the tail and thrust you head-first into boiling water is way toward the top of the list The next day, Mr. Do con- sults an attorney who checks the aty code to see if there is, m fact, a lobster clause. He findsnothing.Mr.Do,who apparently knowi. a lot about both i.eafood and publicity, · calls a press conference dnd draws d line in the brine by reactivating the Lobster Hunt · -an dttion to which Shelly objects in the strongest possible terms. Furthermore. Mr. Do demands an dpology from the city Bingo. The story hits the wires and it's nauonal news. Great oties have smart city attomeyi., and Irvine qualifies on both counts. In short order, Mr Do receives a missive from City Attorney Joel Kuperberg who says the Lobster Hunt "doesn't constitute using equip· m.ent to mfhct pain on 8rurnals as defined in the Irvine city code.· At Uus point, the animal rights organization "People for the Ethical n eaµnent of Ani- mals" -P'ETA for short - weighs in. as you knew they . must. Ironically, U1at triggers a flurry of unintended puns. con- sidering we're lallung about seafood. We were greeted by the manager -a very polite and professional young man named. Kenny. He seemed a little skeptical about who was the mayor and who was the colum- nist, given the stereotype of rnayors as chubby men with gray hair, not good-looking women with blond hair. Christina asked some tough Mayor Shea said she was Sdtished for the moment, but would reserve Judgment Ul)tiJ she can see the game in full operation. Kenny assured us the hunt would be on shortly. and they would welcome the mayor's re.tum. ME!. they were not so sure about. As I walked to my ca.r and reached into my pocket, I was surprised to feel a wet, crumpled wad of paper around my keys.
