thought her friend, Amanda

what would happen if her own

COSTA ~SA -Beach appar-
el giant Quiksilver Inc. plans on
surfing out of Costa Mesa to
Huntington Beach beginning this
summer and may eventually
move its entire Costa Mesa
worldwide headquarters, product
distribution center and corporate
offices.
Company officials announced
this week that they have signed a
long-term lease for two separate
buildings on a 12-acre site on
Bolsa Chica Avenue near McFad-
den Avenue in Huntington
Beach.
The two vacant buildings have
a total of 223,000 square feet of
office and warehouse sp(lce and
are next to the site of the city's
former indoor swap meet.
Escrow on both buildings, to
be purchased by the Sares-Regis
Group of Irvine and leased to
Quiksilver, is expected to close in
July.
If so, the clothing-maker could
begin moving some of its opera-
tion in August, officials said.

Heidi was one of 10 Newport
Harbor High School students in a
speeding Blazer that overturned
onto a median on Irvine Avenue
near Heather Lane early Friday
morning.
She and seven others were
ejected from the truck -three
remain in area hospitals and Don-
nie, the owner of the truck, died
instantly.
Jason Rausch, 18, was the des-
ignated driver for the group that
had been to a party and then lat-
er to a park Thursday evening,
Heidi said.
Jason was arrested for vehicu-
lar manslaughter by Newport
Beach Police and released on
bond.
Jason told Heidi how sorry he
was when he visited her at UCI
Medical Center and Heidi
blamed the truck's
heavy weight, diffi-
cult handling and
speed for the acci-
dent.
"We ·were all
telling him to slow
down the entire
time," she said. "He
just didn't know the car."
Heidi's mother, Holly Funder-
burk, said there wasn't anything
more she could do but give Jason
a hug and tell him that Heidi was
going to be alright when he came
to the hospital.

World War II vet is now at war with tobacco

COSTA ~SA -Although
World War U ended 52 .years ago,
veteran John Quiroz continues to
serve his country by volunteering to
help others fight off the ravages of
cancer that he himself has survived
despite the loss of his larynx.
Quiroz, who will be 75 on May
30, the original designated Memori-
al Day, said his service as a private
first class in the United States army
didn't qualify him as a hero or any-
thing, but he believes it's important

of 26-year-old, but infor-
mation is slow in ~oming.

COSTA MESA - A 26-year-
old man died from a stab
wound to his chest Sunday
afternoon after paramedics
transported him from a Costa
Mesa apartment to Western
Medical Center, Costa Mesa
Police reported.
No one was arrested at press
time and the victim's name was
not released pending family
notification.
Hugo Velen, 15, who lives
across the street from the 500
block Haniilton Street apart-
ment, said a man asked to use
his telephone to call 9-1-1
before noon Sunday.
Hugo said he crossed the
street and saw the bleeding
man who he bad met before
with some other men.
"They were saying, 'Jorge,
Jorge, don't diel'" he said.
Sunday evening police tape
marked off the apartment com-
plex where Costa Mesa police
were interviewing witnesses
and taking photographs.
"We're not getting a lot of
cooperation from people who
might have information on the
circumstances," said Sgt. Neil
Leveratt.

NEWPORT-MESA .-After
months of weather, bureauaatic
and other delays, the new school
district administrative center at
Baker and· Bear streets finally
looks like a viable building and
district staff plans to set up shop
next month.
The mix of an airy, white arch-
way leading to a foyer with
plants and flower beds with a
square gray design in the interior
and exterior creates an institu-
tional feel with some signs of life.
The mirrored windows do not
open, but a sensitive air control
system will monitor temperatures
in different parts of a room, said

Pine said. "You have to look at
this not as an expenditure, but as
an investment" ·

grandmas and grandpas and peo-

referring to the Harbor Area
Adult Day Care Center for
Alzheimer's patients and High
Hopes, both located at Rea.
The district, which took over
the center's leases from the dty a
year ago, wants to reopen lt as an
elementary school in September.
But they've been grappling over
how to humanely oust most of the
dozen or so nonprofit organiza-
tions currently housed there.
But Women Helping Women,
the Costa Mesa Civic Playhouse
and the Center for Creative Alter-
natives will have to move in six
weeks. The Someone cares Soup
Kitchen is already in the process
of moving.
Leece said it's nice that the
government is giving the district
more money to reduce class sizes,
but requiring the agencies to pick
up and move on a short notice
could create a hardship for some
of the programs.

At this week's school board
meeting, several representatives
from agencies leasing space at
Rea pleaded with trustees to give
them more time to find new
homes. However, those who did-
n't make a case before the board
will have to move by July 18.
The adult day care center was
given an additional year; High
Hopes, 90 days; and Vantage
Foundation, eight weeks.
"We gave them our word that
they could stay another year after
the city was no longer involved,"
Leece said. "There was no writ-
ten agreement, but they under-
stood that we would not need the
center for another year. We are
morally obligated to stand by our
word."
The adult day care center,
which recently consolidated its
services in Costa Mesa, is in the
process of building a new facility
in south Huntington Beach. It is
scheduled for completion in
spring 1998. The center was

"The problem I have is they
(school board members) are going
back on what they said,• Feld-
stein said. "I feel it's not fair
because we were under the
impression we would be able to
stay until 1998." ·
Dana Black, a Newport-Mesa
trustee, said the decision to allow
some of the agencies to stay was
important because board mem-
bers didn't want to penalize these
nonprofit agencies. She said she
felt the district owed it to tenants
to abide by their word.
"Our word is our word," Black
said.

: Cotincil to discuss higher speed limits

NEWPORT BEACH -City
Council members will discuss
ways tonight to appease residents
who live on 25 mph streets that
could have speed limits of 30
mph.
Council members received a
deluge of complaints after council
members first discussed raising
e speedJ.imit.s 150 -sbc roads to
comply with state speed trap
laws.
Mayor Jan Dehay said that
staff is recommending council
members form an ad hoc commit-
tee to look at different traffic con-
trol measures and the affects -of
implementing higher limits.
"We have to listen to the peo-
ple on the street and what they
want ... compared with other citi-
zens who drive op the street,"
Debay said.
The traffic affairs committee
has been studying the issue, she
said.
California courts won't enforce
tickets written on streets where
limits are not up to the state-
determined speed.
The proposed changes would
bring the limits in line with state
guidelines that determine the
rates based on how fast drivers go
d~· a study period. If 85% of
the ·yers during a study go 30
mph o less, ·the acceptable limit
is 30 mph.

Mesa police reported.

without incident. His battalion

Had the Japanese not surren-
dered after the United States
bombed Hiroshima and Nagasa-
ki with atomic weaponry, Quiroz
would have been among those
sent in to .invade Japan.
The 129-year Memorial Day
tradition, which originally hon-
ored the memory of soldiers who
died in the Civil War, officially
started when an order was issued
by Gen. John A. Logan in 1868.
The retired Commander in Chief
of the Grand Anny of the Repub-
lic officially designated May 30
as Decoration Day or Memorial
Day.
While Quiroz may not be able
to prevent wars between nations
from erupting, his .battle against
cancer is carried out in local
classrooms where he warns
young people about lhf! dangers
of smoking, all the while placing

Quiroz had a 25-year relation-
ship with everything from chew-
ing tobacco to cigars and ciga-
rettes. It started when he was 12
years old and ended when be
gave up the habit, 17 years
before an operation took away
his larynx.
Today he breathes through a
bole in the trachea of his throat
and also volunteers for the Amer-
ican Cancer Society's Lost Chord
Club, helping others cope after
the operation. He tells others
how he has coped since the 1986
operation.
"I made up my mind from day
one that I would not mope
around the house because I have
this," Quiroz said.
His work in the community
doesn't end with educating peo-
ple about the dangers of smok-
ing. Quiroz, who retired 10 years
ago, also volunteers for the Costa
Mesa Police Department, the
Lions Club and sells buddy pop-
pies for Veterans of Foreign War
Post No. 3536.

burk said she is also still coping

daughter's funeral right now.•
Heidi also considered that
possibility, considering that she
traded seats with Donnie before
the crash so be could be back in
the pit with one of his friends.
She was planning on attend-
ing the school prom with sever-
al of the people in the truck ,
including Donnie, but now
attending his memorial services
will be a struggle because of the
pain and fatigue she experi-
ences walking around.
As for the prom with her arm
going to miss the most. 1 stayed out
·of administration because of the
students. It has been very pleasant
to see kids change and grow over
the years."
During his many years of teach-
ing, Sawyer said he learned to not
make assumptions about students'
capabilities.
"I've tried not to view someone
superficially as to who they are or
what they are doing,• he said. "You

NORWALK -Seven atltletes from the
Newport-Mesa School District, includ-
ing one alternate, qualified for the pres-
tigious Masters Meet, but that was just a
warmup Saturday as local competitors
shined in the CIF Southern Section
track and field finals at Cerritos College.
1\vo school records were broken -
one by a Newport Harbor High girls
relay team, another by Costa Mesa dis-
tance specialist Eric Solis -while two
freshman girls won individual CIF Divi-
sion II championships, April Ross (New-
port Harbor) in the high jump after win-
ning a jump-of( and Llz Morse (Corona
del Mar) in the 800 meters in a must-see
finish.
Every Ne wport Harbor athlete
earned a medal, and with a little more
personnel, Coach Eric 1\veit said, the
Sailors would have been right there
with team leaders J.W. North and
Woo9bridge.
"We couldn't have done much better,
realistically, than what we did," said
1\veit, whose girls achieved eight
medals, while the only Sailor boy repre-
sentative, triple jumper Chuck Loo, also
garnered post-meet hardware foT his
fifth-place effort. "It was a great experi-
-ence for everybody ...
The top nine qua.Wiers from each
event (all divisions combined) advanced
to the Masters Meet, while the top six in
each event in the four divisions won a
medal. The Masters Meet is Friday
night at Long Beach City College.
CQSta Mesa's contingent of four ath-
letes brought home a school-record four
medals, including Solis, who qualified
for the Masters and broke the school
standard in the 800 (1:55.3) with a
1:54.90 clocking. Solis finished second
4n the Division m final.
Mesa was floating on cloud nine
upon the day's conclusion.
· "It's awesome," Mustang Coach
John Carney said, after Solis, Matt
Rudesill (third in the boys shot put),
Bruce Hancock (third in the boys 1,600)
and Gegi Van De Walker (fourth in the
girls 800) all walked away with CIF
Division m medals.
Rudesill's heave of 52 feet, 3 112 inch-

es was short of a personal best, but it
was still good enough to earn him an
altemate's position (No. 10) for the Mas-
ters.
Newport Harbor, which brought the
largest delegation (10 athletes, includ-
ing five in individual events), qualified
three other girls for the Masters: Senior
sensation M.E. Clayton (second in the
Division ll triple jump), senior thrower
Sylvia Madueno (fourth in the discus)
and sophomore Alicia McFall (third in
the 3,200).
Ross cleared a personal-best 5-6 in
winning the high' jump, finishing as the
No. 4 qualifier into the Masters. She
won a jump-off against Cajon's na Han-
son to capture the Division n title.
Ross and Hanson had climbed all the
way up to 5-6 without 411y misses, then
both missed all three attempts at 5-8.
The jump-otf started at 5-7, both
missed. The bar was lowered to 5-6, but
both missed again. Ross cleared 5-5,
Hanson didn't.
•obviously, you're a-little tired from
being out there all day, then April still
had to jump higher than she's ever bad
to jump before," 1\veit said.
Her PR was 5-4 heading into the
meet. "We didn't even have a clue she
would be able to do this well," be said.
"We weren't even thinking top nine. We
were just hoping she would place in
CIF."
Clayton·~ effort in the triple jump (a
personal-best 37-4 3/4) was only 3 1/2
inches short of breaking her older sis-
ter's school record set in 1995. Mandy
Clayton triple jumps for Stanford now.
"My first jump was the only time my
legs had any energy,• said Clayton, who
had a sigh of relief after her initial land-
ing, which topped her previous best of
36-11 1/4, as she finished as the No. 8
qualifier.
Clayton, who has committed to BYU,
broke her sister's school record in the
100 hurdles this year (15.54) at the
Orange County Championships, but

Clayton's 15.82 clocking in the CIP Divi-
sion ll Finals (seventh) was short of
qualifying for the Masters.
Earlier 1n the day, Clayton went a
non-qualifying 17-4 1/4 in the long
jump (third), good for a Division ll
medal. Her PR is 17-5 3/4.
McPall's third-place clocking of
11:12.22 in the eight-lap race was bare-
ly fast enough to qualify ninth for the
Masters. Alternate Rachel Guerro of
Highland went 11:12.63.
Madueno's effort in the discus (124-8)
placed her into the Masters as the sev-
enth qualifier.
Madueno came up short of qualifying
in the shot put, but still captured a sixtb-
place medal (36-6 1/4) to come home
with two.
Newport Harbor's girls 400 relay
team of Cary Morrell, Autumn Puro,
Katie Kent and Leah Zaby merited a
fiftb-place medal (50.06), while the
1,600 relay unit of Zaby, Kent, Sara
McMillen and Puro was fourth, yet
broke the school record of 4:00.0. The
1,600 relay went 3:57.5 (hand-timed), its
best time of the year by three full sec-
onds. It is the alternate for the Masters.
For the boys, junior Loo won a medal
in the triple jump (44-1 1/4), ending his
season.

NORWALK -As Llz Morse of Corpna del
Mar High accelerates in her running career,
it also appears the freshman sensation is in
need of some special tutoring-such as learn-
ing her cllches.
"You know what to tell them, one race at
a time," her track and field coach, Bill Sumn-
er, whispered as she answered reporters'
questions.
Morse, you see, could fast become a
sports-page darling, considering her dynam-
ic victories in big "races, such as Saturday's
girls 800 meters in the CIF Southern Section
Division ll Finals at Cerritos College.
Morse stwmed the field in her CIP-cham-
pionship performance, which was also good
enough to qualify No. 6 for the Masters Meet
this Friday night at Long Beach City College.
"Ob, yeah, I'm looking forward to the
Masters Meet, and, well, as coach says, I'm
· just going to take it one race at a time,"
Morse said.
Morse was kidding. That's part of her
charm.
But what's straightforward is that she
could get a lot of attention if she keeps this
pace up.
Before winning, Morse was boxed in by
leader Jenny Petite of Yucaipa and couldn't
pass until after the final cwve.
But Morse seemed to literally dance
around Petite. With about 50 meters left,
Morse put on the brakes, changed lanes and
left the Thunderbird junior in the dUit, cross-
ing first with a persbnal-best 2:14.25 in a
thrilling finisli.
"I couldn't get around, so I stopped and
went around her," Morse sald. "I probably
shouldn't do that."
"She's so polite," Sumner said, "she
moved over a lane. I mean, instead of run-
ning through, she actually stopped, changed
lanes and ran by her. She ran 700 meters per-
fect, until she stopped."
Mone also vomited after her victory
because of a "combination of reasons,• but
ma.inly because of her pre·meet meal that
includes noodles, strawbenies and a glazed
donut, old-fashioned style. •1t was from
Ralphs,• she said. •1 we.a hungry, so I just ate
whatever I could find. But I paid for ll"
Mone nipped Petite (2:14.91), while Santa
Margarita's Katie Nuanes was third in
2: 17 .23 to earn the alternate spot.
Morse's previous best time in the 800 was
2:16.2, so she shattered her old mark. The 10.
year-old school record ts 2:11.8.
"I was really, really nervous," Morse sold,
•because there were tom of ,r.:~le here. But
by the time I reached the , it teemed
like it bad just begun, so It wasn't that bed."

NAIA last weekend at the NAIA
Championships.
Their points were earned by
Brian Carlson, whose high jump
of 6-9 landed him the fifth-best
height tn the NAIA.
Isis Orejel, who recently s~t
tered the school mark in the
women's 400-meter dash with a
57.3, eclipsed her own best time
to reestablish the record at 56.41.
That time earned her the fifth.
best time in the nation.
Freshman Maribol Delgado
reached the trials of the 800, but
· her time of 2:22.02 was 21st and
did not allow her to advance.
However, J;>elgado also set a new sec standard two weeks ago by
turning in a 2:16.5.
Dalian Kenworthy finished
sixth in the women's pole vault
with a 9-63/4 effort.
All-American honors were
accorded Carlson, Orejel and
Kenworthy.
