John Wayne Aiq>ort has the shortest commercial runway in the country. Total land size of John Wayne Airport is just .C70 acres with developed property on all sides. from all over Orange County. · The solution is not driVU19 the freeway to LAX or Ontario. The freeways are clogged for mart the day, and that will only get worse in the years to come. South County residents must consider the very long· term needs·of all of Orange County's residents dlld either provide a better alternative than El Toro. or get involved m the planning process in a posi· tive way to make El Toro air- port the best possible solution. The air transportation &0lu· tion is not e:xpan.sion of John Wayne Airport because there lB not enough land. lt is not a · high-speed rail to a distant air- port. A high-speed rail does not exist, is not econorilically feasible, and would not be practical for residents conung Joh.r:i Wayne Airport in Newport Beach bas been han- dling the airway needs of Orange County and surround· ing areas for more than 20 years. It is time for the cititens and businesses of Orange County to gather together and share all the concerns about riulki.ng El Toro an airport. With two~ we can support future growth for our beautiful, unique and desirable county. Our citizens and bus1· nesses will need both auports in lhe near future. There could oo only one plausible reaction to such a pronouncement: a unanimous sigh of relief from the sur- rounding communities. Why the Millenruum Plan, which would convert a virtually extinct asset m this country- an available airport facility sw· rounded by a huge residence· free.n'Cnse. buff er zone -mto a white elephant, which m the unlikely event it were ever suc- cessful would generate more traffic congestion and au pqUu- tion than a commeroal auport?
