Serving the Newport-Mesa community since 1907 ', 1 > I I I~ < > 1 > r... william lobdell Belated thanks for [flft of life B efore 1-month-old Matthew Christian Lobdell gets too old ... • Thanks to Hoag Hospital's aides, nurses and doctors. They all make Hoag a wonderful place to have a baby. Even the people who handle the side ser- vices -from birth certificates to baby pictures -were unfailing- ly friendly and helpful. It was our third tour in the labor and delivery and maternity wards, and we feel more pampered each time. • Thanks for nothing is how we feel about our HMO. My wife had a C-section and was allowed only a two-night stay at Hoag before she was booted out. She has finished five marathons and can handle a fair amount of physical pain (plus she had lots of help at home), but you won- der how other women in less for- tunate circumstances deal with these drive-through C-sections. On the bright side, the HMO did pick up the entire cost of the short hospital stay. • Thanks to family and friends who kept us ridiculously well- fed during MattheW's first few ,_weeks. It's always a little awk- ward being on the receiving end of such generosity, but we even- tually got used to it. • No thanks to modem tech- nology, we spent three anxious weeks during the pregnancy wondering if our baby had a chromosome abnormality that causes severe retardation and usually death in infants. U we ever have another baby, we'll decline any of the optional pre- natal tests now available. Only after getting the results of the amniocentesis -which told us Matthew was fine -did we find out the odds of a baby having this particular genetic aberration were extremely long -like 1 in 200,000. And even with a positive screening, the odds are still 16-1 that the baby doesn't have the abnormality. When the odds are so much in your favor, why put yourself through all the worry? • Thanks to a week off after Matthew's birth, 1 now realize how much a working parent misses of their child's day. Though the baby slept almost continuously, l had a great time playing Mr. Mom with my two • SEE THANKS PAGE 4 .i.s~o 1-l.TED PRESS Orange County and Newport Beach favorite horse Silver Charm (far right) turns the comer down the stretch with jockey . He added that resident's complaints about safety hazards need to be addressed. But NaghaVl agreed that despite the complaints there has been little increase in traffic in that area since 1977. The heaviest traJfic, 11,000 vehicles per day, is concentrated on 19th Street, the study shows. By Molly Yanity, Daily Pt/or NEWPORT BEAC H -Some promises were be tter off never made . That may be what Mark Ha user was think- ing after his Yankees captured the Newport Harbor BasebaJJ Association's Bronco Division crown because the Yankees' 3-1 victory over the A's Saturday afternoon meant that Hauser had to sh ave his head. "We're ve ry excited right now," Hauser said immedi- a tely after the game. But his team members seemed to be thrilled over the thought of a bald coach. "Get the clippers!" one of the boys yelled as Hauser tried to congregate the champs in the outfield at Mariners Field for a pos tgame chat. Hauser will hold up his end of the deal, especially considering how his 11 and 12-year-olds played in the final. The Athletics had defeated the Yankees three times in regular season play, but the Yankees met the P\s in Yankees' Ryan Rowe fires away en route to an 11-strlkeout eUort. the semifinals and again in the championship and came away with convincing wins, including a 13-2 in the semis. "All the games with them have bee n competitive," Hauser sald. •The boys just wanted it more and they earned every bit Of It." The Yankees utilized spectacular pitching and near-flawless defense against the A's to earn the crown. Ryan Rowe started for the pinstripes and went five innings allowing just one unearned nm while striking out an impres- sive 11 batters. When Rowe wasn't mowing down the Athletics' hitters with his fastball and changeup, a tough defense backed him. First baseman Bryan Hochwald snagged a hot line drive by Luke Swift to end the slxth inning, and the corps committed just one error. The championship game was a scoreless and hitless affair until the Yankees got to th Athletics' starter. Joey Cantarella Jed ofi the bottom of the third with ft lngle to left field. He scored when Mike Bearss reached on an error. Bearss stole sec- ond and third base, then scored wh n the throw to third went Ulto the outfield double to bring Swilt across the plate . Rowe fanned the next two batters to squelch the rally. "We've talked about (pitching. and defense) from day one. That's fundamental baseball. That's what was going to climb the way up the mountain, pitching and defense," Hauser said. The Yankees added an insurance run in the fifth when Geoff Rill roped a hit to left-center. The ball landed about a yard from the fence and rolled under it for a ground-rule double. •1 thought lt was home run and I was running ha.rd, then - shucks," Rill said. Hochwaid drove Rill ln on a single. Rowe added a single that inning, but Swift worked out of a bases-loaded jam with a strikeout and an infield fiy. R.J. But it was the 15 strikeouts thaf the Blue Jays' Kyle Kastner, Davis Pemstein and Morgan Govaars recorded that helped the Jays win the title with a 4-3 score. Kastner started the game on the hill and went two innings. He allowed two runs in the first inning while fanning six. Manager Rick Erickson had a dilemma, though. If his Blue Jays lost Saturday, they would play Sunday -once again versus the Marlins -in the double-elimination townament. If any of his pitchers threw more than two innings, they would not be able to pitch in Sunday's game. He took Kastner out after two and inserted his ace, nine-year-old Pemstein. Pemstein was almost untouchable. He was rung up for just one unearned run, and did not allow a hit or a walk. Pemstein, who said he has been pitching for a couple years, faJ1;lled nine batters. Erickson opted to keep him in for three innings. ·we were going for the win,• Erickson said. "lbis was a big pressure game, but we have a good staff.• ~ric.kson explained that he kept Pem- stem in because of the right-hander's impeccable control, and because he felt the bottom of the Marlins' lineup could not touch him. He was right as Marlins' batters five through 12 reached base just once the entire game. That was when Tom Jackson worked out a last-inning walk against Govaars. Jackson went on to steal second and third. Representing the tying run, he was standing on third with no outs. But Govaars struck out the next three batters to seal the tiUe for the Blue Jays. " "He has come in twice and shut down the Marlins,• Erickson said. : A 2-2 tie was broken open in the fourth • inning when Pemstein worked out a walk. He stole second and third before Erle Schelin sent a double to left field. He stole third and came in to score on a balk, in what would be the game-winner. Front row, from le~ Beth Armour, Sherry Pa Ngyabean, Hilary Cox, Aileen Bennett, Marla Uceda; second row, from left: Karen Helm, Cynthia Ganda, Jenny Owen, Ubby Carras, Tara Yarbrough; third row, from left: Sandy Hislop, Sandy Zubrtn, Heather Sealy, Cary Reed. . NTS OCC's Pirates made a big splash in 1996-97 women's athletics, specifically the state champion swim team under Coach Jon Rathfelder, which extended its winning streak to 120 straight. AJtate champi- onship, two onference titles, conference MVP honors and several shining moments marked a successful year for Orange Coast College's women's athletics program. The story of the year was written when Coast's swimming team held a 120-dual meet winning streak in tact without the heavily-relied upon points provided by the Pirates' state champion diver Sandra Zubrin, who was participating in an individual meet elsewhere. The Pirates, headed by first-year coach Jon Rathfelder, utilized sterling perlormances by middle-of-the-pack swimmers and stars to clinch the victories over Saddleback and Palomar. The wins pushed the Pirates to 6-0 on the season and paved the way for the college's only state championship of the year, as well as an Orange Empire Conference title. Rathfelder's squad won the state title with a 40-point advantage over Diablo Valley. It was the team's second state banner in three years. Zubrin, back in Pirate blue, collected the winning medal in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving competitions. Chynta Ganda also stole the 50-yard butterfly. Coast swept all three relay titles with teams consisting of the combinations of Hilary Cox, Ganda, Sherry Panggabean, Carey Read and Jenny Owen. Coralso took second places in the 200 and 500 freestyle races. Cox and Ganda each posted two OEC titles, and Read nabbed the championship 200 freestyle. By Molly Yanity, Daily Piiot • VOLLEYBALL Coach Chuck Cutenese guided his spikers to a 10-9 overall record, but a 5-7 conference mark denied the Pirates a spot in the postseason playoffs. Amber Ambrose, a 6-foot-1 middle blocker, and setter Kati French landed on the conference's Second Team, while Nicole McCuistion earned an honorable mention . • SOCCER A highly-successful season came to a sad end wben Coast's women's soccer team, which posted a 16-3-3 overall showing, fell to the undefeated Cypress squad 3-0 in the Regional championship. It wasn't so much that Cypress won (Cypress handed the Pirates their only OEC loss of the season), but that Coast was without two of their stars, Shellie Bradbury and Keri Lawson, who bad fallen to injury. Coast came in second to Cypress in the conference with an 8-1-1 record. Freshman defender Terra 1Ueh-Kooh joined Bradbury and Lawson on the All-OEC First Team. Shannon Donegan, Jessica Funke and Heather Parsons made the Second Team. • C11oss CoUNlllv One of OCC's conference MVPs was found on the cross country team. Donna Hanis clinched the best time in the OEC at the conference meet to lead the Pirate harriers to the top team score. The team ended up placing fifth in the state. Harris took third at the state meet. • BASKETBALL Sophomore Dianne Pulido rebounded from a dismal freshman campaign to earn conference MVP accolades her sophomore year. Pulido's 20.2 points per game and 7.4 rebounds per contest paced the 20-11 Pirates to the Regional semifinals where they fell to Victor Valley. In his eighth season as head coach, Mike Thornton tallied his third consecutive 20-win season, but the team took fourth in the OEC with a 5-5 record. Pulido, who moved into fourth place on Coast's all-time scoring list, will play at Chapman next year. • SOPTBALL · In Coach Erin Gallagher's two seasons at the helm of Coast's softball ship, the Pirates have won just four conference games. Gallagher's team finished in the basement of the Orange Empire Conference with a 2-14 record. The squad was 7-21 overall. • 1'ENNis Cami Erickson. If it weren't tor Erickson's doubles partner Whitney Gilliam, that would almost be all that needed to be said about Coast's highly successful tennis team. Erickson went 12-0 in conference matches, stole the show at Ojai Tournament with an upset victory and made it to the State quarterlinals. In doubles action, she and Gilliam won the OEC crown and advanced to the State semis. In her 20th season, Coach Janice Maran took her team to a 10-2 conference record finishing second to Saddleback, who was responsible for the Pirates' losses. Overall, Maran and company were 14-3. • TRACK Donna Harris was again the top bill in the track program. She qualified for the State Meet in four events -the 1,500-meter run, the 3,000, 5,000 and the 800. Abbie Erickson (hammer throw), Suzanne Moshiri (100), Vanessa Smith Uavelin) and Megan Waters (400 IH) all advanced to State, and Araceli Martinez, Christine Riel and Chiharu Kwnagai raced in the 10,000. As a team, the Pirates finished third in the OEC.
