of eating disorders and the use of Ritalin
as an appetite suppressant among some
Corona del Mar students are "cultural"
and •societal" issues, school officials
said Monday.
And, officials said after a Daily Pilot

his ham radio.
Now he uses the equip·
ment to wow his children and
grandchildren.
Nestled between a crib and tiny,
brightly colored plastic chairs is the
black receiver on which the Costa
Mesa resident says he captured the
beep, beep, beeps of Sputnik, the
Soviet satellite launched m 1957.
The inadent had been tucked
away in his memory until he attend-
ed an Aug. 24 school board meeting,
where students from Harbor View
Elementary demono;trated how they
talked to the Space Shuttle Colwn-
b1a via ham radio.
Scott· remembers his brush with

By example, he Will teach, not preach

not have the power to change the
school's curriculum, Ul.Stitute prayer, nor
I orce Bible reading upon the student body.
Even given the charice, J would not do so

ing Christianity," Aug. 19; Educationally
Speaking, -The reasons for separating
church and state a.re clear," Aug. 23)
J am vocal about my fajth, but the fol-
lowing are the only ways in which J am
allowed to promote a Christiari atmosphere
on campus -by talking about my beliefs
and ideals when individually interacting
with my peers and, more importantly,
backing them up with my actions. This is
what I've set out to do throughout my
whole high school career.
Sometimes in history, Christians have
not been the best example of loving God
and loving their ne19hbori as themselves.
Vet I will try to promote kindne and
make the days better for those around me.
My intentions are to benefit the school, and
I think it's important not to use my pc)sitlon
to preach at my fellow students.
High school is an arend of hormones,
emotions, trials and tough deru1ons. I'm
simply trying to make it enjoyable. That's
why I've tried to inject some humor into the
sports announcements and worn spandex
at the pep rallies.
I was also nusquoted in an earlier article
m the Daily Pilot, saying that I planned to
use my position as a bully pulpit from
which to preach the Christian religion to
my peers (•Leading the way," Aug. 14).
This would be beyond the boundaries of
good discretion. 1 will only promote my

beliefs by trying to be a good citizen on my
campus.
. I hope that J have explained my inten-
tions and asswed you that 1 will not ven-
ture into the realm of joining church with
state. History has proven that it doesn't
work. Nor do I think it is right.
I am excited about my senior year, and I
hope that I can make a' positive effect
through the relationships that will be built,
whether those around me share my beliefs
or not. If there are further concerns, I
would hope that you, Rhoda Friedman and
Gay Geiser-Sandoval, as well as others
would come voice them to me at school.
Come and pull me out of class. A chat
would be welcomed.

(coverage of) the proposed
arts ansi education center
("DlSCUISion on arts center
inches forward,• Aug. 25).
Wasn't there some thought of
open space behind the library
when it was proposed to build
senior housing there? It
seemed to me that was a
good idea. The library is, after
all, a pubhc facility for the use
of many different age groups.
And the hoµsing was badly
needed. The library is not an
elitist center for special inter-
est groups.
A large public park that
would be useful to all seems a
much better use of the land.
How lovely for those donors
who give many thousands of
dollars to have their names on
a brass plaque, and for those
other so-called leaders who
will have a large feather in
th!i!ir hat for promoting a
pyramid for the ages. This is
not a library concern.
If someone wants to donate
cash to improve our library -
increase staff. buy books and
hold open houses for the peo-
ple in the community who use
the library -well and good.
Do not use my money to build
someone's reputation.

I am calling about the
library in Newport Beach and
the proposed arts and educa-
tion center, which I feel is
extremely important. I think it
would also bring the city a
center that we have needed.
We in the area cannot meet
on certain issues in one build-
ing. We were turned away at
the recent airport meeting
because there was not
enough setiting, and the
library people would not open
the doors on the side.
The need is very important,
and so I would stress that.

Support improving
athletic facilities
I am calling about the ath-
letic facilities for the high
schools, and I just think it is
amazing in this age of physi-
cal fitness and everyone
being so aware of how impor-
tant exercise is that we would
even hesitate to go ahead and
improve the athletic fields and
pools for our kids (•School
board gives OK to spend for
sketches of new sports facili-
ty," Aug. 26).
We are not just talking
about people who are com-
peting on teams. All of the
students are required to take
at least two years of physical
education . And the fields are
a disgrace -they are so run-
down. And the community
gets the benefit of the pools
all summer.
The longer we wait on ~
kind of improvement and
maintenance, the more
expensive it is going to cost. I
think we need to go nght
ahead nnd take care of it.

Wher e's all that
money going?
J have a question that has
been puzzling me for quite a
long time. I thought the pur-
pose of the California lottery
was to help raise funds to be
used for the upkeep and the
needs of our children's
schools. Instead we see the
schools in desperate need of
funds for repairs and other
such needs -books, etc.
We have these multimil-
lion-dollar lottery prizes.
Where are the profi~ that are
supposed to be commg from
the lottery to help support our
schools' needs? It just doesn't
make any sense to me. I
thought this was the whole
purpose of beginning the
state lottery. Weren't these
intended to support the
schools of our kids -their
needs, the upkeep, new
schools, books, supplies,
whatever is needed for these
schoolsi l thQught the lottery
was to help our children and
their education. Am I missing
something?

decided to let a wall surround-
ing the preschool playground
to stand. Neighbors living near
the school asked the city to
remove it, saying it
encroached on public property
and created a hazard.
Preschool officials unplored

band did not play on
B alhoa' Rendezvous
Bollroom was huge. It
was a block long, run·
mng from Palm Street to
· Washington Street and from
the boardwalk to the alley.
This was the swing era. The
Rendezvous featured gredt
swing bdnds dJld played to
packed crowds -thousands.
There was no public parking.
People parked from West
Newport to the end of the
peninsula to dance at the
Rendezvous. It was one of
the most popular ballrooms
m Southern California.
However, for some unex·
plained reason, the Ren-
dezvous died when Labor
Day came along. Other
Southern California ball·
rooms went on all winter
· long. Not the Rendezvous.
That first ye~r the man-
agement tried to keep.the
place open w1t.h a full arches·
tra and almost went bankrupt
playing to a mere handful of
dancers. 1 guess the history
of Balboa as a summer resort
was too hdrd to break. And
so the management cdme up
Wlth one of the worst ideas in
local history -the one-man
band. Well, 1t wasn't really a
one·man band. It wds one
man, a musician, one boy,
me, and a Jukebox
When the Rendezvous first
opened, I was a gate boy.
That meant I was one of sev-
en young men who manned
the gates through which the
dancers proceeded to the
dance floor. Dances were a
nickel, and we saw to it that
each couple deposited a
nickel ticket in a box before
they went out on the ddllce
floor. After each dance, we
gate boys went out on the
dance floor Wlth long ropes
connected to the gates and
pulled the ddncers off the
floor in time for the next
dance.

room opened until the band
started playing. He also
dimmed the lights for waltzes
and let down from the ceiling

shrill squeal. He had to hit
the uuke with a soft hammer
which, for some reason,
stopped llie squeal.
As you can see, the posi-
tion of sound man involved ·
great responsibilities. The
strain was so great that after
one year as sound man, I quit
and went to work at the
Corona del Mar bath house.
With that labored explana-
tion I go on with the story of
the one-man band.
After we couldn't attract
enough of a crowd to pay for
a full band, the management
tried out the one-man band
The man was a trombone
player from one of the Holly·
wood stuclios The procedure
was that I, the sound man,
would play a number on the
1uke box, attach the JUke box
to the PA system, then the
trombone player would play
along Wlth the record. Pretty
snazzy, huh?
After a couple of weeks of
that priceless entertainment,
we were no longer playing to
small crowds. We were play-
ing to no crowds at all So the
trombone player went back
to Hollywood, the Jukebox
went back to Gus Tampbs,
who had a bar across the
alle from the Rendezvous

depnved of a hoped-for win·
ter's income.
And that is the story of
Balboa's one·man, or to be
more accurate, one·man,
one-boy-and·a·Jukebox
band. I think the story must
be told as an essential part of
any definitive history of Bal-
boa.

Going tO extremes

wide for an adventurous

never ones to be behind on a
trend, students al Newport Har-
bor and Corona del Mar spent
lheir summers pushing the enve-
lope. • .
While none of them attempted
Everest, a few came close. And
their summers read like an
Extreme Travel brochure·
• Jamie Dow and Tyler
Haskell, seruors at Newport Har-
bor, spent two weeks excavating
Mdyan ruins in the rain forest of
Belize.
• Brett Moore, a senior at
Newport Harbor, went on an
drcheological expedition in
Majorca, excavating old Beker
sites on the Mediterranean
island off the coast of Spain. The
Beker culture built Stonehenge
and also left remnants lying in
the sands dll over Europe.
Brett dlso learned that, in
adclition to being a great place
for Beker ruins, Majorca is also
Europe's summer party capital.
• Cameran McCallister, a
senior at Corona del Mar, spent
three weeks on a tiny sailboat off
the coast of Maine, battling the
stormy seas -and seasickness.

Another lesson students
loorned: Stay away from the
howler monkeys.
"We were walking along in
the 1ungle, and the howler mon-

us." Tyler said. "They hit a cou·
pie of people. We 1ust left.•
"They threw feces at us, too,•
said Jamie. who was alSo in
Belize4 but not at the same time

Students also learned that
people eat differently m different
places -and follow different
cxerase regimes. ·

closing of the bar represented a
lifestyle change for him and his

piece would set them straight.
By building a sensational con-
clusion on rumor, inference, and
the hyperbolic tales of
teenagers, Ms. Garrison wants
us to believe that Ritalin abuse
is:
1) virtually a daily ritual for a
•sizable minority" (never
defined) of girls at CdM;
2) the proximate cause of this
abuse is Cd.M's obsession with
"pelf P-on.,,
Mi Wife and I have two chil·
dren that attend CdM, and two
that attend Harbor. We live in
the CdM school wne, but have
family and numerous friends at
both schools. We know, from
what our children tell us that
5e'has been a problem with
ta1in use at CdM. The school
bas a problem with alcohol,
marijuana, cocaine and other
illegal drugs. Is CdM unique

Hardly! Harbor, Estancia and
Costa Mesa all have similar

tation of the feeling at our
school regarding the publicized
problem with eating disorders
and Ritalin abuse at CdM. We
are in no way "gleeful" about
this serious problem at our
•nval· school that exists at our
own school, too. These Corona
gills are not only our friends but
also our teammates for many
club sports. Their suffering is
ours as well and the problem of
the whole community. To sepa-
rate the lS&Ue in terms of school
rivalry is wrong.

to reign as kingpins at
Balboa Bay Club.
For over 20 years, the
Balboa Bay Club
gymnasium has been
the summer home for
volleyball youth clinics and
leagues for all ages. Hundreds
of young Newport-Mesa athletes
have learned about volleyball at
the BBC gym, but also, more
adult players have en1oyed the
competitive and exciting open
l~gues. .
The Balboa Bdy juruor high

highlight as the girls dnd boys
skill levels are very similar at
this age.
The net height .is so the

eight feet). ThiS summer's
champions were the Green

players for their high school

to the preseason hype Monday
against visiting Cerritos.
Unfortunately, inexperience was a major factor
as an early second-half goal by Alex Araneda was
the difference in a 1-0 loss for the Piiates in both
teams' season opener.

should have never even happened. Especially in
the first minute of the second half.•
The play leading up to the goal seemed in.no-
cent enough as both tea.ms were vying for pos-

•Newport Aquatic Center hosts 35th
annual event, with over 800 paddlers.
Over 90 crews of nine athletes each have mdicated
their intent to compete in ll1e 35th annual Catalina
Channel Crossmg, which is Sept 11. ·
Some 45 "Wahine" (women's) teams will start at 8
a.m. at the mouth of the N<'wport Harbor for their 27·
mile trip to Avalon on Catalina Island.
Sunday the men will leave from Avalon with over
50 "Kane• (men's) teams racing a 31-mile course to
the Newport Dunes.
There will also be a co-ed division wtuch will race
with the women's teams on ~ttirday, and an ironman
classaf1cation for the men's division.
A large expo wtth food, booths, awards ceremony
and live music will finish off the competitive weekend.
The event is hosted by the Newport Aquatic Center
and mvolves teams from Hawaii, Canada, Tahiti and
the East Coast, as well as Califonua entnes.
The Catalina Channel Crossing is a rune-man
"change race," with six athletes paddling in a canoe at
any one tune, with fresh paddlers substituted into the
moving canoes via water changes taking place conti-
nously throughout the crossing. Each canoe has its
own escort boat, where paddlers may have 20 minutes
or so to drink water and catch their breath before the
next 20-50-minute session of paddling. Strength, sta-
mina, discipline and timing are crucial to the success of
the wmn.ing teams.
Newport Aquatic Center invites the public to attend
the expo al Newport Dunes on Sunday, Sept. 12, from
