I just read the most disgusting artide in the Daily Pilot titled, ,("Taking a tree-mendous toll," June 24). Mr. So and So bumped his head on a tree while on his skateboard and because of his "accident" we all pay. When are we going to get judges that throw out these lawsuits that blame other people for things that happen to us? When will we grow up and take responsibility for our lives? And when will brother stop suing brother? The money received from lawsuits is filthy lucre. Recently I stumbled over a boogie board and broke my arm. My first thought was "Pick up your feet," not "Who can I sue?" • Do we have to pay for ttwe lawsuits with our tax money and then have our city defaced by cutting down the trees because someone fell off a skateboard, Which is used to hop over hills, n'(ounds and all types of ramps? Costa Mesa is the only city • around here that looks imma- ture and like a desert because ot lack of trees. Have they gone too far? T he controversial curricu- lum teaches second· graders to identify bodily systems such as the respiratory, digestive and reproductive sys- tem. It is interesting that no one seems to object to children learning to identify their respira- tory or circulatory systems, but for some reason the reproduc- tive system is seen as something that needs to be avoided or hushed up -a taboo subject. As someone who does a great deal of-family counseling, I am disturbed at the idea that chil- dren learn to treat certain parts of their bodies as shameful because of it being omitted from discussion within their families. TIIE REV. CHJllS SCHRINER Costa Mesa I feel it is something that should be done by the parents of the child. I think second grade is far too young. I also think it is time for the residents of Newport-Mesa to possibly ban together and get these peo- ple with that frame of mind out of their positions. I think it is very dangerous. I thank God that I don't have a child at this time in that school system. I hope by the time I do, THE ISSUE: Readers debate discussion of the reproductive organs iR second-grade classrooms dangerous people like that will be out and not jeopardizing our children. BOB SUUJVAN Costa Mesa Summer has begun and my son is working on the basics - reading, writing and arithmetic. I feel the basics have not been addressed enough in the four years he has been attending school as it was when I attended public school in the primary grades. I do not think second-graders need to be wasting educational minutes discussing their repro- ductive systems. From being inundated with ems prepara- tion for weeks prior to testing, I think the Newport-Mesa Unified School District needs to get back to the basics. Allow the teachers at the pri- mary level to begin the process of educating our youth. MARY HELEN FllAKE-MINAR Corona del Mar Yes, I detinftely agree with the school board decision to bet- ter educate our children about health, ow bodies' reproductive system and sexuality. I have not seen the proposed curriculum and I am sure the information presented is age-appropriate. Most of us parents in the United States are in favor of good sex education programs for our children to adequately pre- pare them for the difficult deci- sions they need to make. As a parent of a teenager in our schools in Costa Mesa, I favor all of the efforts toward this edu- cation. Research also clearly indi- cates that good sex education programs do help teens post- pone sexual intercourse and make responsible decisions as well as feeling better about themselves. I do commend the school board for their decision and hope they will continue to ignore these few fanatics th.at are stirring things up. They are ignorant and preju- diced and have a definite agen- da that does not belong in our · public schools. Teaching about our bodies and health to ele- mentary school children has nothing to do with sex. sexuality or sexual orientation. They are coiifusing the issues. Besides that, sexual ori- entation is not a lifestyle, it is a part of our identity. I don't understand these ~ple who claim to have values, yet act in shameful ways. In my opinion, one of the worst social problems in our society today is the lack of respect for others. I am pleased to bear that Corona del Mar High School's standards advo- cate respect for everyone regardless of their race, religion or sexuality. For Kay the goal is even more simple (since she bas never been to such a large competition: Make it past the first round in the 100 and make the final in the long jump. • With all of that Mid. lef1 t.ace the harsh reality of relative •fossils• such as ourselves reachin9 any level of athletic success. As I type this report I am lying with my left hamstring on a seemingly always-present bag of ice, the result of a strain on June 30, a mere 22 days away from the most important challenge since leaving the elite level in my '20s. Worse, I will not even vault in practice until ·D-Day. • Not very settling to say the least. My rationalization -I won the national championships in March only 13 days after a. cortisone injection to the same leg and now I have 21 days. The games we play on ounelves. The biggest differences from life here in Corona del Mar and that of 12th World Veterans', Athletic Championships is that 1' is winter in South Abica; and I : have some lengthy baggage thaC won't quite make the overhead bin. ln fact I can tell you from experience that check-in at the ' airport is not a friendly experience for anyone. Once on the way to a meet in the Olympif Stadium in Mexico City, I paid a baggage handler $20 to make sure that my poles got on the plane. Mission accomplished. except that when they arrived, they were cut in half. I guess he figured that I was serious about getting them on the plane. His experience included the merger of a high end boutique with a larger company. -rile challenge was t.o keep the company's culture, but add the resources of a larger company. It was like taking a cl888ic car and adding new horaepower t.o it,• he said. Although he eltjoyed the challenges at bis former company and it was dllJicUlt for him t.o leave, Chapman couldn't pass up what Coldwell Banker had t.o offer. "It was the combination of a good company, with good people in a good office and it's difficult t:o find that level of compatibility all the way through," he said. The level of recognition among consumers that Coldwell Banker offered was also appealing to Chapman. '7he area from t jetty in Ne~rt Beac~ to the pier in ~n Clemente has always been a different "Their commitment spans· the entire marketplace, with agents positioned in .'.__ marketplace anil b«ause of that it needs to be marketed differently" all segments," he said. "We have a wide range with one company that has directed itself to satisfy all segments." -Bob Chapman For Chapman, his transfer t:o Coldwell Banker on ~. 1 offered more than just a n~w challenge. "It was the opportunity to focus the office and company on an area -the Orange County Coastal segment -and t:o grow that presence int:o a domioant market sh.are,• he explained. -rhe opportunity to work with a cOtnpany th.at ha the stfenjtb of a name that Coldwell Banker· has in the region and the nation and t.o make it blend in with the coastal area." Chapman applies the same intense focus to the game of real estate that he once applied t:o the game of tennis. A former tee.ching pro, Chapman previously spent his days on the court with teh.nis greats Rod Laver and Roy Emerson, Wimbledon champions in both singl~ and also as doubles partners. The trio traveled around the country teaching clinics for adult-tennis-players. - The transition was natural for Chapman, who bad spent his summers between college semesters aa the uaiatant pro at a teruri1 club. Upon graduation from TWane Univenity in New Orleans with a baelielor of arta depee in history, Chapman packed hia duffel t»q and hit tbe courta.
