COSTA MESA -Counaiman Joe Erickson
plans to ask the City Council tonight to recollSld-
er a reduction m developer fees approved at last
month's meeting.
Erickson filed a request with the city manag-
er's office a week ago ask:in~ the council to recc>n-
sider its 3-2 decision reducing the city's traffic
impact fees by 25 %.
At tbat time, fees were
reduced from $228 to .
$150. The fees are levied
on developers of new pro-
jects to pay for traffic
improvements needed
when a business gener-
ates additional traffic in
the community.

decision to reduce the fees to $150 increases the

Once he's finished at OCC,
Harber plans to enroll in South-
ern California College's acceler-
ated general education program.
He hopes to earn a bachelor's
degree in organizational man-
agement.
Although pursuing a job in the
engineering field is an aspira-
tion, Ben said he's also interested
in ballet dancing.
"It helps to teach self-disci-
pline, • said the teen. "It keeps
me focused and keeps me in
shape. It exposes you to a lot of
people.·
The high school-college stu-
dent, who has been dancing tap
and ballet since he was 9,
received a scholarship from the
Rock School of Pennsylvania Bal-
let.
The scholarship allows Ben to
go on a six-week summer camp,
where he will gain experience
and exposure in the world or
dance. He'll return from the
camp two days before the start of
OCC's fall classes.
He also was accepted to Pacif-
ic Northwestern Ballet in Seattle.
"Ballet is a lot fun,• he said. "I
like jumpmg a Jot and turning.
Tap leans more on the jazz side
and is less controlled. Ballet is a
controlled explosion .
"I'm excited about going. But
I'm not looking forward to the
weather.•

Altbough the three sand-
~overed workers have only
been ch1sellng away since Sat-
urday, Swap Meet visitors Sun-
day were amazed at the intri-
cately carved thatch huts and
the volcano in progress.
The Orange County Fair-
grounds paid for the sand -
purchased from a quarry-and
L.A. Cellular is sponsoring the
sculpture by paying for the
$20,000 in Sandscapes' labor
costs, said Lynn Howes, fair
spokeswoman.
The sculpture is being creat-
ed with the f air's tropical, fish,
fruits and nuts theme in mind.
"I tried to think of ways to
work fruit and nuts into this, but
I just couldn't," Glenn said.

sculpture will remain on display
outside the fairgrounds admin-
istrative building throughout
the entire fair, July 11 -27.

•He got volunteered to drive
me home and the rest is histo-
ry," 'she said.
Now the sand duo travels the
country, whipping up sand
sculptures for falrs, trade shows
and other events for most of the
year.
"Every project is a learning
experience," Glenn said.
"There's something zen about
the temporary nature of it.•
While his wife enjoys the
work, she always looks forward
to their three-month break dur-
ing the winter.
"It can be exhausting,• she
said. •This is a fun project, but
it's really hard to do.•

SUSPENSION CHECK
While there arc two basic front-
suspension designs, both include
ball joints. These ball-in-socket
devices allow the suspension to be
flexible and are critical to its well-
being. As for rear suspension sys-
tems, their design varies with the
type of car. Regardless of which
system is used, it is essential that
the wear points (such as ba11 joints
and control-arm and strut-rod bush-
ings) be' checked often. These
components arc subjected to great
amounts of stress that lCld to wear
and tear. lf they should fail, it
could lead to road-handling pro-
blems that could well endanger the
safety of the of the car's occupants.
Thus, it is a good idea to have your
car's steering and suspension
checked on a routine basis as part
of its regular maintenance
schedule.
HINT: Neglecting a needed
wheel alignment can result in
wear to steering and swipen-
sion pans, along with prema-
ture tire wear, reduced gas
mileage, and poor handling.
