Balboa Theater price tag
increases to $3;5 million
• Unexpected costs throw fund-raising efforts into high
gear to renovate closed movie house for disabled patrons.

BALBOA PENINSULA -The
nonprofit foundation trying to resur-
rect the Balboa Theater has run into
some unexpected costs that will dri-
ve fund-raising efforts up to $3.5
million.
"The biggest problem with this
whole building scenario is the
Americans [with] Disabilities Act
requirements,• said Dayna Pettit,
board president for the Balboa Per-
forming Arts Theatre Foundation.
Although she anticipated incur-
ring costs from redesigning the inte-
rior of the 1927 building for disabled
patrons, she did not foresee the
extent of those costs, Pettit said. The
theater must install an elevator,
wider aisles and handicapped bath-
room stalls. Even the projection
room must be wheelchair accessi-
ble.
Foundation members remain
optimistic.
"We have to raise another $2.5

that's what happened last
weekend when Newport
Dunes showed Prank Capra's
•Arsenic and Old Lace" at the
sandy edge of the Back Bay.
The 1944 movie of grand-
motherly poisoners and their
unwitting Brooklynite victims
Dickered on the Dunes' water-
side screen as part of an ongo-
ing series of Saturday evening
films. It's a program of screen-
ings that started as a treat for
long-term motor home residents
of the resort, said Michele But-
terworth, activities coordinator
for the area's RV park.
But the screenings, which
have been running for about five
years, have gradually become
more popular than organizers
originally expected, drawing in
residents from surrounding
neighborhoods with the lure of
entertaining drama and the
Dunes' tranquil beaches.
•rt was just kind of some-
thing that we wanted to be
able to offer to the RV guests,•
Butterworth said •1t just kind
of spread out. We started get-
ting so many people that were
having fun and enjoying it.•
The movies are shown at
dusk, the small screen on
which they are played glowing
brightly as the light of the sky
fades into darkness. Atten-
dance varies from week to
week, but has been as high as
130 people, Butterworth said.
"It's like going to the drive-
in," she said. "You just bring
you lawn chair. You sit down
on the sand."
The movies that are shown
are often fairly light entertain-
ment. Earlier in the summer,
titles like "Operation Dumbo
Drop• and "WillyWonka and
the Chocolate Factory• greeted
beacbside cinephiles.

Bayshore Beach reopens after
tests show safe bacteria levels

reopened late Thursday after-
noon after the county ·
announced that tests conduct-
ed on the beach's water
showed acceptable bactena

Three hundred feet of the
bayside beach was closed
Tuesday after Newport Beach
utility workers found 800 gal-
lons of raw .sewage flowing

Workers determined that

living in this nature preserve park.
That might change over the
next several days as homeless
people -who were forced out of
their makeshift homes by a team
of law enforcement agencies that
included the Costa Mesa and
Newport Beach police depart-
ments -may return. to the site.
Police officers gave the home-
less campers living in Talbert Park
a verbal warning Tuesday, telling
them they had 48 hours to leave.
Police arrived early Thursday
morning and found only two peo-
ple residing in a dilapidated
shack. Leandra Aguilar and her
boyfriend, John ,Williamson, were
dted for camping illegally and
released.
Authorities said it appears all of
the campsites haven't been aban·
doned, but they expect some tran-
sients may try to return to the park
over the weekend.

ums on 19th Street. Citing a com-
bination of neighbor complaihts
and accounts of violent crime,
police swept through the park in
August and arrested two men.
Police have defended their
actions by noting they have tried
to take the best possible path in
dealing with the homeless prob·
lem, but not everyone agrees with
them.
Aguilar said she doesn't feel
police have been professional or
patient. She said she reels
harassed, pointing to the 15 tick-
ets she's received from the Costa
Mesa and Newport Beach police
departments in the last four
months.
The tickets have been for
expired automobile registration
tags and lack of proof of insur-
ance. The $59 fine that comes
with each ticket is more than a
homeless person can pay, Aguilar
said.
Aguilar said she thinks police
officers are µsing the tickets as a
way to intimidate her into leaving
the area, particularly the Tulbert
Marshes.
"We don't have anywhere to
go,• Aguilar said.
Others have supported the ·
police efforts, including Jim
Palmer, presldent of the Orange
County Rescue Mission.
Palmer said the police have
worked hard to deal with the
homeless humanely.
However, Aguilar said, she is
not the only homeless person
being harassed. Others have
been pestered about minor infrac-
tions such as failing to register
their bicydes, she said.
The former Talbert resident
also questioned whether police
had a legaJ nght to perform d
background check on Bruce
McDonald, who was deported to
Canada this week.
McDonaJd, who raised eye-
brows when appearing at council
meetings, was never arrested for
a crime in connection with camp-
ing in TaJbert.
Police said McDonald was dis·
ruptive enough to make counol
members fearful. .

This weekend more than 1, 150
bicyclists from Orange and San
Diego counties are expected to
bike about 150 miles from New-
port Dunes to San Diego's Mis-
sion Bay to raise $400,000 to fight
multiple sclerosis. ·
The 16th annual event is spon-
sored by the National Multiple
Sclerosis Society and is the local
chapters' largest to date.
PacifiCarerream Ted, grew to
include 37 family members, •
frtends and colleaguet who raised
$32,000. This year, Terri Kober-
stem said, the 55-member team is
hoping to raise $40,000. This
year's team also includes several
riders and volunteers who suffer
from the disease. Terri Kober-
stein said two things motivate her
to participate in the event year
after year: medical progress fight-
ing the disease and her father's
pt>s1tive outlook.

ple sclerosis continue to wear
away, (my father) never ever bas
had an ounce of self-pity. He
says, 'You know what, Terri? 0th-·
er people have it worse that I
do,'" she said.
The ride begins at 7:30 a.m.
Saturday. Participants will enjoy
a party and spend the night in
Carlsbad campgrounds and.
hotels Rest stops will be posted
every 10 to 15 miles and 500 vol·
unteers will provide medical sup-
port, meals and massages as rid-
ers mal(e their way to San
Diego's Mission Bay. ·

To participate, riders must raise at
least $150. Proceeds help chapter
programs, such as outreach days
to help newly diagnosed patients,
and exercise and wellness activi-
ties, Keithley said. Newport
Coast residents Terri and Jim
Koberstein have participated in
the event for the past three years.
The two onginally jom.ed the nde
in honor of Terri's father, Ted Gay-
don, who suffers from muJbple
sclerosis and lS confined to a

sive to Cox. Tess' mother Carol

tom, inviting Cox to personally
deliver the flag, but a represen-
tative in his office said he was m

Tess.sent her letter July 23.
But as everyone knows,
sometimes things in Washington
take a while.
The whole month of August
went by, and nothing happened.
School started, Eastbluff
opened, and Tess became con-
sumed with the demands of sec-
ond grade: reading. math prob-
lems, and selling wrappmg
paper for the school fund-raiser
In fact, she was next door at a
neighbor's house when her
father came over and told her

But Valley managed to cover every possibility
and the resulting pass attempt I ell incomplete.
When the Eagles had a chance to seize
momentum late in the ftrst half, a bobbled snap
on fourth-and-goal at the Valley 3-yard line sent
them to intermission with only a rallying cry.
Just when it appeared The Eagles (3-2) had
. finally courted momentum -as Marshall Hen-
dricks returned his Orange County-leading fifth
interception 25 yards for a TD, then tied the
score at 14-14 with an 8-yard conversion run
three plays after halftime -Valley senior Aaron
Barragan sprinted 95 yards to paydirt with the
ensuing kickoff.
Then, when the Eagles' defense held and
gave the hosts possession at therr own 22 with
4:18 remaining, what Hendncks later described
as a cramp in his hamstnng forced him to the

Despite the setback, pumped-up Estancia
Coach Dave Perk.ins told his players he was
proud of their second-half effort and hoped they
could use their performance as a springboard
into the Pacllic Coast League opener against
Costa Mesa Oct. 15.
"That was a good (Valley) team we battled
tonight,• Perkins said. • U we played like this last
week (a stunning 21-12 loss to previously win-
less Anaheim), we'd be 4-1 right now. I told our
kids we had a great preseason. •
The Eagles appeared ready to head into
league with a full head of steam when Hendricks

Utilizing the same two-point converaion for-
mation that failed to produce in the fourth quar-
ter, however, Valley pressured the Eagles into an
incompletion.
Sa.nta Ana Valley answered with a six-play,
68~yard TD drive which was keyed by a 35-yard
Barragan run and capped by Ellu Patu's 20-y.ard
scoring scampet up the middle. The first of Hugb
Jbarra's three conversion kicks gave the Flllcons
a 7-6 edge.
Estancia held after the first of its three lost
fumbles (two more than they had coughed up in
four previous games), then marched into the Val-
ley red zone.
Two costly penalties (they had 1 O for 66 yards
on the night) forced the Eagles to settle for a 36-
yard field-goal try, which sailed wi4e left mid-
way through the second quarter:
Hendricks, who finl.$hed with 227 rushing
yards on 30 carries, broke 46 yarc1$ to create first-
and-goal at the 4 with 38 seconf§ left in the flrst
half.
But three runs gained nothing and, having
used all its timeouts, Estancia was forced to hur-
ry the fourth-down snap, resulting in the bobble.
Estancia earned the statistical edge, with 16
first downs and 324 rushing yards, to the Fal-
eons' seven and 191.
Mike Baron, a Valley assistant coach, went
out of his way to tell Perkins and Estancia senior
lineman Kyle Westman "Your line kicked our

But the tough-luck Eagles had to settle for

Muniz, a 1949 graduate of
Newport Harbor, is the brother
of the late Mani.tel Muruz, a
second-team All-CIF selection
at tackle off the championship
'42 grid team at Newport and
the brother of Joe, a two-year
veteran at Harbor in 1943 and
'44.
He was also named first string
All-Eastern Conference once in
the early 50's and had
been highly. praised by
the late Johnny Owens,
the early day OCC
defensive coach.
"I always liked
Johnny Owens," Muniz
said. To him, Owens
was a solid and
fair-minded coach.
One of his greatest
perfonnances in high school
was the night his '48 Harbor
High team almost defeated St.
Anthony of Long Beach, the
defending ClF champion, wluch
starred future All-Amencan
fullback John Olszewski and
All·CIF quarterback Bill Mais.
Both tired of MuniZ exhausting
them m rugged line play.
He was a 250-pound guard
with power and quickness. Few
could defend against him
consistently.
Muruz also spent 10 years
helpmg Costa Mesa youth with
his coaclung in Pop Warner
!ootball He once helped his
brother Manuel with
his youth coaching in
Santa Ana. His two top
players were his son,
and Isaac CUrtis, who
went on to star at
Santa Ana High in the
backfield, and at end
for the Cincinnati
Bengals.
Looking back and
noting that Muniz
played through three
head coaches in high
school and one in
AlMwliz
Muniz later helped
coach the Costa Mesa
Comanches six years
(the 9-11 age group)
and the Costa Mesa
junior college, he was asked to
name the one who impressed
him most over the years.
In response, Muniz said,
"Al Irwin. He was the kind of
man you wanted to play your
heart out for."
By the time Muniz had
cleared Orange Coast College,
he had been offered ample
scholarships and 20 letters came
from different colleges, which
included Washington State,
Oregon State, Oregon, Tulsa,
Fresno and San Jose State.
After considerable thought, he
chose not to advance to a major
college. · .

Costa Mesa while the Eagles'
girls team earned it's rust win of
the year, 24-31, at Fairview Park
against the Mustangs.
Estancia placed the top six run-
ners in the boys race. Danny Vax-
gas, Luis Segovinao and Humber-
to Rojas finished in a pack for the
first three places. Mike Casillas,
Eric Lopez and Abe Inouye

Costa Mesa's best finisher was

ry in a tiebreaker against North-
wood in a Pacific Coast League
match Thursday.
Both teams were tied 9.9 in
mat<:hes and 72-72 in games
after regulation play. Misa Doan
pulled out a gutsy win in her
tiebreaker match for the extra
point.
No. 1 singles player Hillary
Havens won three of four
matches, including the
tiebreaker. The doubles team
won six out of nine matches in
the Mustangs' winning effort.
Costa Mesa is now 6-7, 2-1.
The Mustangs are at Laguna

approximately 40 entries and has
always been one of Newport's
more successful races.
However, prior to the
invention of Global Positioning
Systems (GBS), the race was
oftentimes won by the boat that
could fine the 14-mile bank
mark rust.
With a little fbg, a little
current and a little compass,
many bad trouble locating the
turning mark.
In fact. the committee boat
had trouble determining just
where it was as well.
The 14-Mile Bank has a
hump called Larson's Knoll,
which sits about 350 feet below
the surface.
When you drop your cement
block attached to the mark line,
you better hope you hit the knoll
or the mark Titanics.
In any event, the GPS has
saved the day and all is well
with this weU run and well
attended event.
Awards and trophies will be
