believes that words must be support-
ed by action. He first heard this adage
in India from Mother Teresa in 1984.
•'Words are not enough,' she said,
'let's see what they do,'• he recalled.
Herzog immediately scribbled the
quote down on the back of an enve-
lope and impressed it into memory.
The foundation was officially orga-
nized in June 1998 to raise funds for
cultural events in Newport Beach.
Although the group originally intend-
ed to get involved with other art pro-
jects, when the idea for an Arts and
Education Center began to evolve,
the group shifted focus.
Though it has not started the cam-
paign, the Arts Foundation intends to
approach large companies and
national organizations for funding,
Herzog said. Foundation members
hope to offer the businesses naming
opportunities for donations.

was dependent on the oty council to
provide funding.

activists were nominated this week to
receive Circle of Service awards and
memorial plaques in Lions Park.
Charles and Betty Jean Beecher, who
shaped the Costa Mesa Historical Soo.-
ety, and Roy Andreen, a former dean at
OCC, were nominated by Mayor Gary
Monahan for longtime service to the
conununity.
Circle of Service a wards recogruze
citizens for their long-tenn service to the
community or extraordinary contnbu-
tions to the city. The recipients are hon-
ored with a memonaJ plaque at the
fountain outside the Neighborhood
Community Center in Lions Park. The
parks comrmssion will review the rec;-
omrnendations Wednesday and send
them to the oty council.

ly got that going and worked on that for
30 years.~
The Beechers spent countless hours
together at the historical society, collett-
ing and organizing photos, creating a
library and classifying artifacts.
They also put in regular hours at the
Estanaa Adobe, giving talks and acting
as docents. But many consider their
biggest contribution to be their success-
ful lobbying of the city 10 1981 to pur-
chase a permanent home for the Histor-
ical Society.
Betty Beecher passed away in 1998.
About a year later, in the spring of this
year, Charles died.
Roy Andreen was nominated by
Monahan for a variety of contributions
to the city.
•Roy has been involved in so many
different thlngs -the Mesa del Mar
Homeowners Association, TeWinkle
Park, the planning commission,'' Mona-
han said.
Andreen served as OCC's Dean of
Counseling and Guidance for 15 years.
He was president of the Mesa del Mar
Homeowners Assn. for 20 years and also
served as vice president of the Costa·
Mesa Senior Center's executive board.
He died in 1998.
Past recipients of the Circle of Service
award include Glen "Les" Miller for his
mvolvement in the Lions Club and
Susan Temple for her long service to the
city in its finance department.

The owner, Charles "Mac• Quarrie, lw
had a longtime passion and fascination with
the radio. Over the pa.st 20 )'CU'S. he has
~ollcaed and accumulated hundreds of
radios. Believing these historic ucasures
,hould be preserved for all to COJOY -Mac's
Old lime Radio Museum was born.
Mac's original "Yesterday's Treasures·
cscablished 18 )'CU'S ago, has grown into rwo
adcilcional areas: "Mac's Old Tune Radios"
and "Mac's Old Time Radio Museum."
Racilos from as early as 1916 through
1990 can be viewed, along with a nice

from the very carty cryml sea that operaced
without any batteries or clearicity to the
laige and bulky battery secs, requiring large
and sometimes messy banerics, as the source
of power. From the 1920s to the 1930s, with

Jack and Gloria's Antiques of Costa Mesa will have
another 40 foor conwner of antiques on sale this
weekend. This hipmenc is part of their buying
cxpcdidon in England this past September. The
overflow is stored in a warehouse in England,
awaiting the next shipment. .
Jack Christensen and Gloria Braunbergcr-
Reichstein have been in the antique furniture
business for more than 30 years. Merging their
separate businesses 15 years ago has allowed them to
cscablish themselves in England and expand co rwo
locations in Costa Mesa: a showroom at 298 l
Fairview Road packed with carefully restored
furniture and a warehouse and showroom ac 1365
Logan.
Furnirure can be purchased as is or be complcrdy
refinished. All rcsrorocion is carried out on the
premises µnder Ch ristensen's guise. Each piece is
individually assessed and thoroughly reconditioned.
Alrhough the warehouse has its own showrooms, the
majority of th e furnirure is purchased before
resrorarion cakes place, and then goes directly co the
