When the restaurant opens its
doors to the public Monday at 5
p.m.. 1t will bring to fruition two
years of planning and just under a
year of construction. The Yard
House in Costa Mesa is the first
attempt at expansion of its popular
Long Beach counterpart and name·
sake, which boasts 250 beers on tap.
The 1Tiangle Square location will
offer 150 beers flowing out of 180
different taps. Putting the operation
together has been no easy task.

opened the S.S. Red Sail on Balboa
Island four months ago.

told the Library Foundabon to

Although the unpetus for
the Oct. 19 letter is unknown,
its content 1s clear. It demands
the foundabon reduce the ratio
between expenses to run the
organization and funds donat-
ed to the library; create a plan
for regular fmanrtal reporting;
and g1ve greater control of

city and the library board.

with the Pacific Symphony Orchestra
and comes to terms with the loss of
his son, his mind remains on the
music, the people and the community
that keep him going.

Ohis season of the Pacilic Symphony
Orchestra marks the 10th anniver-
sary of its muslcal director, Carl
St.Clair. Durtng hls tenure, the orgo-
niwUon has experienced tremen-
dous success, with Jts presence on the
national scene gaining credibility and definition,
and its popularity at home steadily increasing.
The 41-year-old conductor keeps up a packed
schedule, shuttling back and forth between Cali-
fornia and Europe, where he is the principal guest
conductor of the Stuttgart Raclio Orchestra.
St.Clair is also a visiting artist at the University of
Southern Cal11ornia, and h1.s prominence on the
domestic and international muslc scene has
helped to keep the Pacific Symphony's star rlslng.
This success was cast in shadow this summer
by the accidental death of St.Clair's 18-month-
old son. But the conductor has made a tremen-
dous effort to overcome this personal tragedy,
returning quickly to the public work that he
finds meaningful. St.Clair spoke in a recent
interview of the strength he draws from the
symphony and his thoughts about the past 10
years of the organization's development.

ny Orchestra expanded tremendously. Ticket
revenues and the budget have both gone up
considerably in the years since you've been
here. Could you talk a bit about what you
feel your role has been in the growth of the
orchestra?

A: The Pacific Symphony Orchestra has real-
ly been a tenitic success story in the last 10
years. I'm sure we are all aware of the vanous
economic ups and downs and the various mar-
kets in Orange County tn the last 10 years that
have really cost many cities in Cahlornia their
orchestral life. We know the various plights of,
let's say, San Diego. And the Los Angeles
Chamber Orchestra. It's taken a toll on orches-
tras m cities like San Jose, although they're
coming back, and Sacramento and Oakland
and I'm sure the list is even longer.
But dilling this time, the Paatic Symphony
has been able to maintain a very strong finan-
cial base Our audiences have actually grown. on· almost every front, m spite of the various dif-
ficult times, which we are now on the upswing
from, we have either mamtamed or gotten bet-
ter in almost every avenue of what a symphony
orchestra's We actually encompasses. For that.
we owe the credit to our donors, the people who
support us. We owe that to our audience that
was willing to stick with us, and a subscnber
base who is conurutted to have concerts as part
of their cultural We in Orange County.
I think certainly I would be remiss if we
would leave out the fact that we have the
[Orange County) Perfomung Arts Center. It's
been an unportdnt catalyst. The Pacific Sym-
phony today would not be where it IS bad it not
moved into The Center itself. And I think our
leadership has just been terrific. Louis Spisto, in
many of hlS years. we were a dynanuc duo, a
one-two punch, and I think that really helped
keep the fires lit. And now that he's gone on to
Detroit and now New York, I think John Forsyte
is doing a wonderful job.
He came on in, in 1998?
Yeah, he's been here just a little over a year,
but I mean he's just picked up as though there
was neve r a moment of slack, and I think the
leadership from our board of duectors has just
grown and gotten more mspuing and deeper.
We're not using any energy or any money to
correct problems or ills of the past or mistakes
of the past. That gives everyone a very opti-
mistic, very positive energy cycle. with which to
roll around m . And this is something that not
every orchestra or not every oty can say So
thars why, m growing the Pacilic Symphony
Orchestra, we have to do it slowly and m paral-
lel. Orange County is not that old, the orchestra
is not that old, you know.
So we're all developing our mlati.onship in a
very hand-in-hand way, wtuch makes for a very
positive future. It's when one or the other com-
ponents of this relationship gets out of sync with
the others that relationship problems develop.
Q: How do you decide on how to strike a
balance between more conseNatlve decisions,
for holiday programs and things people always
expect to hear, and more dllficult work.
A: Programming is really what the music
director -meaning that musical spokesperson
for the PSO board -that's where the relation-
ship is built between the audience and the
orchestra, through the decisions that the music
director makes in programming
Because basically I would be considered a
musical chef, in which I'm inviting you to my
house for dinner and I'm cooking you a musical
meal every time you're invited in. U it's always
the same meal, you would get tired of coming.
If it's always such e~otic food that you go home
with some kind of stomach problem, then that
would also be an unacceptable invitation.
But there is a trust. Over a period of 10 years,
what's happened, I think, is that the majority of
the audience knows that I'm th.inking about
them. They know that the programming deci-
sions that I'm making have them m mind. They
know that there's some order, some plan, some
larger scheme It's not
just every rught a
smorgasbord or a sort
of pot luck, if you will.

you have to fill. Not
only do you have to
have thls standard of
musical excellence,
but you also have to
act as a sort of man-
ager for all the vari-
ous mus/clans and
their various interests,
to get them to mesh
into a single product.
And then you have to
think about how that's

going to relate to the community. You're at
the intersection of so many interests.
A: You know, it's true. Today, the job of a 20th
century American music director has grown in
complexity. A very large part of my JOb, for
instance, is public speaking. And in addibon to
that, and to attending meebngs of all kinds, I'm
also a very very hands-on mu ic director as far
as our educabon program, working with OUI
education director and our ass1Stant conductor
and our youth programs, our Class Act pro-
grams, our Mervyn's Family Concert Senes, our
youth concert series, the clas ical raves, and
then I do one myseU, wluch lS the ClasSlcal Con-
nections, which is sort of for older audiences.
You have to also work very closely with the
president of the organization, with budgets. And
then there is the orchestra itself. There's the
orchestra col1llD.lttee and the personnel director
and so there are many components and it is very
complicated.
But I love it, I thrive on it. When you have
these kind of energies moving towttrd the same
tocal point, it serves only to energize me, to make
me realize how blessed l am, how fortunate I am
to have this kind of symphony orchestra. r

you've come back into your career very
quickly and with a tremendous amount of
enthusiasm. Are you willing to talk a little b11
about your perspective on things?
A: We're trying to reel that from the public
arena, where it was from a long period of time
What we're trying to do in our family and Wlth
our dose friends now is to k.md of reel it m, to
pull it into the more private, personal sanctums,
because inevitably this is where it's going to
have to be dealt with. So that's where we are
today, and for me -and I will only speak for me
personally -I am d1l artist, you know. That's
·who I am. So, whatever I deal With is dealt with
as an artist, through my art. So for me to do oth-
erwise would be' contradictory to who I am as a
spitjt. It would have been impossible for me not

so much for us during
those darkened times.
The Pacific Symphony
family, the staff, the orchestra, the board of d.trec-
tors, they wer~ standtng by us through all of th.ls.
But to be back with them m the elation and
the jubilatory scene of a concert, really it's like
seeing the hrst bloom of a rejuvenation of We
So that's what's great for us. And 1 would like ~o
say that my wife, Susan, her spint is very very
strong, her faith is strong. We're both supporting
one another and domg the best we can She's
done marvelous. But we have so many friends.
Without the prayers and all of the various acts of
compassion, from e-mails to phone calls to
prayers to masses to prayer sess1on to hugs, we
see some people nodding on the street ... We
had one lady who was stopped at a stop sign
and we were stopped aero s the street and she
just mouthed ·rm praying for you." That, you
know, brings you to tears immediately. So with·
out all this compassion, it really would be impos-
sible for us to be where we are today.
Really, we didn't know how deeply our rela-
tionship with our community went, because
we're always.in U1e public eye, but this out-·
pouring was so overwhelming that we didn't
know if we had the grace to really accept it
gracefully. But it just showed the depth of the
relationship that we had made with our com·
munity. It made us very very proud.

on the trees around the lake.
I will remember that view, or
try to, for a very long time.
We also spent some time
in Tarrytown, a small town on
the Hudson beneath the
majestic Tappan Zee Bridge
-and the heart of Washing-
ton Irving country.
We took a stroll through
the ancient graveyard at the
Old Dutch Church, and that
should be enough of a clue if
you don't recall Irving or his
work. But, just in case, Wash-
ington Irving (1783-1859) was
the first American writer to
become an international suc·
cess. He was a very popular
humorist and satirist. With a
particular interest in the his-
tory and legends of the old
Dutch who settled and ruled
New York when it was New
Amsterdam.
His most famous works are
~A History of New York H and
"The Sketch Book." The first
is the saga of a fictitious char-
acter named HI<nickerbock-
er," whom Irving described
as •a small, elderly gentle-
man, dressed in an old black
coat and a cocked hat -not
entirely in his right nund."
"The Sketch Book" is
where you'll find two of my,
and everyone else's, favorite
short stories -"Rip Van
Winkle" and "The Legend of
Sleepy Hollow.• Tarrytown is,

Monahan and Dave Ellis,
spokesman for the Newport
Beach-based Airport Working
Group, said they, too, are wait-
ing to see the actual language
of the proposed initiatives
until making a judgment.
"We're in a wait-and-see
mode,• Ellis said. "We haven't
really analyzed (the proposed
initiatives] yet. We have an
open mind, but really have
come to no decision on it.•
Tom Edwards, a member of
the cj.ty's El Toro Citizens
Advisory Commission, said he
believes all of the initiatives
are hmdering the airport plan-
rung process.
"I don't even think we need
the Safe and Healthy Commu-

plans if one of the proposed
initiatives is passed, was

While the board has the
legal right to place initiatives
on the ballot without voters'
consent, Len Kranser, one of
the Safe and Healthy Commu-
nities Initiative's leading pro-
ponents, blasted the attempt
and said it would be self-
defeating for Newport Beach
and Costa Mesa voters to
approve them instead of his
initiative.
"(My] initiative gives pro-
tection for people who live
near John Wayne Airport by
allowing one-third of voters in
the county to stop any expan-
sion of John Wayne,• Kranser
· said. "lf (Ron) Bates' proposal
passes, there will be no protec-
tion whatsoever for people
who live around John Wayne
because the requirement that
airport expansion go to the
public has been excluded.•
Supervisor Tom Wilson,
who opposes EJ Toro, released
a statement Thursday while he
was in Washington, D.C .. call-
ing the proposed initiatives
•manufactured ... to confuse
voters.•
•These mitiatives detract
from the validity of the Safe
and Healthy Communities Ini-
tiative, which was placed on
the ballot by the citizeuj of
Orange County, not the Board
or Supervisors,• Wilson said. ·

A day of fun and games for
seventh-graders at Corona
Del Mar High School was,
in fact, teaching them valu-
able lessons.
It was part of a program
called Project Adventure,
which the school is intro-
ducing at the seventh-
grade le\tel. DeJ',\ellding on
its success, officials at the
school hope to add it to the
eighth-grade curriculum
next year, said Kim Patrick,
an English teacher at Coro-
na Del Mar.

works on teaching self-
esteem through a game-ori-
ented day,• Patrick said . ·u
works on team building,
cooperation, playing fair
and playing safe."
Students all had a
favorite game, whether it
was the calculator game,
the jump rope game, the
n8.f!1e game or one of at
least 10 others. But each
game had one thing in com-
mon -they taught team-
work.
Each team enthusiasti-
cally tried to beat the other
teams. In order to do that,
they had to work together to
solve problems.
In the •islands• game,
12-year-old Grant Almquist
explained. students were
required to fit into consecu-
tively fewer and fewer o.r-
cles until there was only one
left for them all to squeeze
into.

Project Adventure is a
nonprofit organization
which was swted in Massa-
chusetts by the principal of
a school that was begirining
to have a drug problem,
said Scott Garman, the West
Coast project manager for
Project Adventure.
The principal wanted to
give children the tools
they would need to handle
the influx of negative
influences, Garman said.
He developed the organi-
zation based on his back-
ground with the Outward
Bound adventure pro-
gram, jn which people
hike into the wilderness as
a test of their stamina and
courage. .

foundation in an effort to
give the seventh-graders a

Alone, divoiQ9d and with two
sons, Reynolds had some hard
choices to make -choices that
would give her iome control
over her life. She began reading
material on cancer to see what
her options were and eventually
chose a very aggressive form of
treatment involving three
months of chemotherapy and
six weeks of radiation.
•What wds most devastating
(about the cancer) was my fear
of the treatment. I had heard so
much about chemotherapy and
losing my hair,• Reynolds said,
adding that death didn't fright-
en her nearly as much as letting
her quality of life slip away.
The chemotherapy room, she
recalled, was a strange purgato-
ry.
Three tj.mes a month for two
hours each session, she sat in
her recliner in the pink room
overlooking the sea. About sev-
en other ill strangers in varying
degrees of sickness sat with her,
often chatting and sharing in
one of the most intimate of
humAil experiences. -we were looking at death in
the face, " she said. recalling the
eeriness of the situation. .
The chemicals made her
nauseous, but, as a woman, she
said, the worst was losing all her
hair. It started falling out on
Easter Sunday. Department
store wigs, with their synthetic
linmg, hurt her sensitive scalp so
much that she spent $1,800 on a
wig made of real hair.
It took months before her hair
started growing back, which
hrst retwned in a mousy gray. It

One issue that adds to the
problem is boaters fail to visit
their vessel as frequently
during the winter as they do
during the sununer months.
The boat is closed up tight
with limited ventilation, lights
are turned off, hatches dosed
and air circulation is almost
non-eX.istent. The perfect
place for Mr. Mildew to
hibernate.
Mildew loves a damp dark
environment; especially where
there is no air circulation.
Under the base of a door,
beneath cushions, under ·
drawers are places often
overlooked. So how can you
stop this monster from
growing, smelling and causing
damage to your interior?
remove all foul weather gear,
towels, clothing and other
materials off the boat when
the boat is not oomg used.
Open all cabinets, lockers,
doors, and even bilge hatch
openings.
Dehumidifiers like
Calcium Silicate crystals
absorb dampness and they
work fairly well, however, it
must be disposed of with
caution and is
environmentally sensitive.
Dampness condenses into
water droplets, especially at
mght when it gets colder and
then during the day it rises.
If it doesn't have a place to
escape, it sticks to whatever it
