books to spend too much time on
the "O'Neil years" in Newport
Beach.
And he's JUSt fine with that.
On Monday, the Newport
Beach City Council will apj:>oiflt a
new mayor, ending O'Neil's one-
year tenure as the city's ceremoru-
al leader.
He leaves the council m much
better shape than when he took
over the mayor's seat.
A year ago, the council was still
suffering from the divlSlveness left
over from the firing or City
Manger Kevin Murphy. O'Neil
says his top priority was to heal
the divisions.
"What l hoped to achieve as
mayor was to impart, fJ.rSt of all, to
my colleagues on the City Coun-
cil, the need to work together as a
urut with trust and respect,• he
said late last week m an interview
about tus time as mayor.
"It was my belief,• O'Neil con-
tinued, "at that time that there
was a lack of cohesiveness
"I believe I've had' a calming
effect, an ability to bring the coun-
cil together. And I think that's an
achievement."
So do O'Neil's colleagues, who
unilaterally prn1sed hlm for unit-.

director," Noyes said.
And, Noyes added: "He's kept
his sense of humor, which IS
important."
O'Neil notes, with a healthy air
of satisfaction, that the pa.st year
has been free of the kind of con-
troversy and infighting that lead
to Murphy's ouster.

port, they should hglit that issue on
its own. Don't pass on an airport
problem to your neighbors if you
cannot accept that problem in your
own neighborhood. ••Do unto oth-
ers as you would have done to
yourself." We all want a nice home
to raise a family. An airport near
homes just doesn't~ not at El
Toro or John Wayne. No matter
how much it is wished upon, El
Toro will never be the best site for
an airport. Let's join forces, stop all
airports near residential zones, and
look for a site we can all be happy
with for years to come. Don't be
fooled into thinking there will be
no homes or schools affected by El
Toro. l live 1 112 miles away from
the north runway and there are
four schools less than a half-mile
away from our home.

John Wayne ·Airport? Maybe, but
the fact remains that most of us in
South Orange County sympathize
with her plight and feel that John
Wayne's current capacity is more
than adequate to serve us into the .
future. Statistics also seem to vali-
date this assumption. The wheels
are coming off the county's plans

Most say gun shows are all business
AT ISSUE: We asked readers if the Orange
County Fairgrounds should continue to hold gun
shows despite new state regulations. Here's what
some had to say.
One more time, law-abiding cit-
izens have to pay the price for
what crimlnals have done.
Yes, I believe gun shows should
continue to be held at the fair-
grounds. The fairgrounds are paid
for by my taxes. The gun shows fol-
low the law. A lot of people doing
legal business make a living at
these shows. There is a lot more to
these shows than guns -camping
gear, survival gear or Y2K items,
first-aid items, collectibles of all
sorts, tools, books and a lot more.
People should go see for them-
selves before they gwe up their
rights to the pohticians.

I think it is important to remember
Ulat the gun shows themselves are
selling legal commerce. This is reg-
ulated business. But also, the cul-
ture of the show itself is one of self-
reliance and, generally speaking,
keeping the ability to do thrngs in
the hands of the people them-
selves. And I ttunk that this is a
very pro-American sort of feeling
and stance. I think it be a disap-
pointment should the shows not be
able to continue.

They are conducted responsibly and

I am calling in regards to the
article about the fairgrounds gun
show. When you go to a gun show
at the Orange County Fairgrounds,
there are people there who are
selling everything -guns, knives,
hats, camping equipment -you
name it. lt is the most basic form of
a free-enterprise system you can
find . There are people in our gov-
ernment that do not like the free-
enterprise system and would like to
see 1t done away with. This is a
really good example. The people
that are there and are holding
these gun shows are in the greatest
part not criminals, yet the laws that
are being passed are not against
criminals. They are against the
honest, law-abiding citizen. When
the government does not trust the
people, can the people trust the
. government? There is an old, old,
old saying: Your enemy will rarely
harm you. It was true then, and it is
true now. The other side of that
coin should always be considered.

1 am a resident of Huntington
Beach who is also served by the
Orange County Fairgrounds, which.
IS a county facility. My response is
that I really see the fairgrounds as a
family and recreational facility,
thereby making it totally inappro-
priate for something such as a gun
show. I think gun shows are better
off being removed from the urban
environment. A more appropriate
place for a gun show would be
someplace in the middle of the ·
desert or something like that, away
from an urban environment. I feel
very strongly about that.

Eating disorders not
contagious diseases
Perhaps the next time we have
an outbreak of head lice at one
of our elementary schools we
should just advise all parents to
remove their children from the
school and dose it down ("Second
thoughts," Sept. 27) This would be
consistent with Tony Dodero's op.in-
ion of what to do if a few students
reportedly suffer fTom an eating dis-
order -to quote Dodero, "One par-
ent was paying attention (to an artv
cle on teenage eating disorders m •
the Aug. 28 Daily Pilot) ... she took •
her children out of Corona del Mar
High School." _
It would appear that Dodero con-.
eludes that this will solve the par-
ent's concern over eating disOrders.
Have you studied the disease? Do
you know the relationship of cause
and effect? You don't get it at school
and it's not contagious. Taking a
child out of a school will not pre-
clude her from contracting an eating
disorder-edti.ng disorders are com-·
plex sociological, psychological and
medical ISSUes. Family discord has
long been considered an important
risk factor. Highly teamed coun-
selors, psychol0Q1Sts ad psychiatnsts
typlcally treat eating disorders. Per-
haps Parent X would be better off
exanuning her relationship with her
-chtldren.
Dodero notices the absence of a
public display of concern by school
and district officials. He never
thought to talk to someone at Coro-
na del Mar High School to find out •
why we do not dlscuss this issue
publicly or why we do not reveal the
number of students we are helpmg
with their personal and/or emotional
problems. The Rights of Privacy Act
and the Education Code of the state
of California prohibit school person-
nel from discussing confidential mat-
ters with the press or public.
ls the school dtsbict concerned
with the health and welfare of our -
children? Of course we a.re. Schools
do more for families and children
than any other institutions in our
society. We care about our students
and their welfare, but we cannot vio-
late the confidentiality of our stu-
dents. The answer lies in educating
our soaety about the causes of this
disease, not m removing student5
from their schools in the hope that
they won't be tainted by exposure to
societal problems. Schools do not
create sooety's ills, they combat
them.
It takes a whole village lo raise a
child -it also talces a whole society
to create the pressures·which lead to
emotional diseases. On second
thought, maybe you need to conduct.

hire a genealogii.t out of
the'Yellow Page and buy a
family tree done up on fake
vellwn with fancy red and
gold calligraphy.
You could go bock as far as
'you wanted, depending on
how much you wanted to
spend and how much wall
• space you wanted to cover.
, I read somewhere that
; Charlemagne was a favonte ·
ancestor to whom people
'liked to trace their roots.

indulge in such nonsense.

found the man who started
the Gardner line -and it
wasn't Charlemagne.

of a Scottish chief. This gar-
dener had no name because
hls father bad declined to
ldenbfy himself. As I remem-
· ber the story, hts mother was
some kind of a scullery ma.id,

on the wrong side or the
sheets. I guess the modem
generation doesn't have a
comer on carelessness about
marriage vows.
Well, one year there was a
famine. The villagers went to
the castle and begged the

university and, as I
discovered at the memorial
service, grew up in the
same neighborhood, 10
years apart.
Dave was an encyclopedic
source of county athletic
history, but much more, a
friendly,· ht1morous, selfless
and dedicated colleague.
His company always

covered together each year.
He'll will be missed, but

season (mirumum 100 attempts),
the sharpshooting Fitzpatrick
played under Pete Newell at Cal
and was chosen team MVP of
the Golden Bears' 1959 NCAA
championship squad that beat
West Virginia (and All-American
Jerry West) in the
finals.

Fitzpatrick, a 6-foot
shooting guard who
dropped in 20 points to
lead Cal m the NCAA

Fitzpatrick, who also played
·in beach volleyball tournaments,
continued playing basketball

A 1955 Harbor graduate,
Fitzpatrick played hoops with •

Amateur Athletic Uriion national
championship.
Fitzpatrick was a
first-team all-conference
selection, along with teamma\e
Jeddy Young, while Jim Embree
was a second-team choice

Fitzpatrick, who grew up

MacMillian, was a shortstop in

After college, he accepted his
first 1ob at St John Vianney High
in LA (now Daruel Murphy) as a
teacher and coach. TWo years •
later, Fitzpdtrick was at Hancock
College in Santa Mana as a
basketbdll coach. (Hancock's
football coach at the time was
John Madden.)
But Fitzpatrick, who has two
master's degrees, went another
direct.Jon and worked as an
engineer in the aerospace
busmess for six years, then
started a computer software
company His unique resume
also mcludes a 10-year stint as
president of Beverly Hills
Savings and Loan.
Since 1983, Fitzpatrick has
been in the real estate
development business. H.is
