Stirling, speaking to about SO members of the Orange County Fed- eration of Republican Women at the Costa Mesa Golf and Country Club, outlined his campaign platform, a philosophy firmly based on some of the laws he has helped craft since joining the state Justice Department in 1990 . As the current chief deputy attor- ney general to Attorney General Dan Lungren, Stirling said he has been on the front lines of creating the state's Three Strikes Law, enforcing the death penalty. and implementing Megan's Law. By Barry Faulkner, Daily Prior C OSTA MESA -If you don't like the Costa Mesa High football team's starting lineup, wait one practice. It's likely to change. But while most prep programs are preparing for the rapidly approaching 1997 season with !IOme degree of uncertainty, Coach Jeny Howell grapples daily with what his colleagues would consider a pleasant problem. No less than 18 of his 32 returning letterman started at least one game ft>r last fall's 6-5 playoff squad, including eight who put in appearances on both sides of the ball . However, with position changes, sparse losses to graduation, an altered offensive scheme, and the dynamic intrasquad competitic;m that continues to punctuate the Mustangs' preseason workouts, Howell and hls staff have their hands full sorting out exactly who fits best where. Though the ma1ority of spots have been so!Jdthed, ever-changing variables conspire to make an accurate preseason portrayal of Mesa personnel about as re!Jable as a teleVlSion weatherman's forecast. Here's a posillon-by-position guideline: • Quarterback -Senior Ronnie Llevanos, who completed just one pass a year ago in three starts, holds a narrow edge over fellow senior Dan Baume, who started the other eight games, completing 15 of 43 for 292 yards and three touchdowns. A shift from the smashmouth double wing to the Wing-T, will likely give the Mesa signal callers more opportunities to throw. It will also take away their status as glorified pulling guards, which they earned by regularly joining the off-tackle blocking interference in the double wing attack. Both have worked hard to improve their passing skills (six interceptions to three lDs in '96), according to Howell, who believes the ability of one or both to provide consistent play and leadership will be vital to the team's lofty expectations. By Barry Faulkner. Daily Pilot C OSTA MESA -The seed~ of what Coach Jeny Howell believes may be c special 1997 season for the Cost; Mesa High football team took root in the satw'ated playing surface of the Buena Park High stadium last November. It was there that the reign of the smashmouth double wing offense gave way to, well, rain, or at least the mud puddle remnants of a storm that preceded the Mustangs' 14-0 loss· to Sunny Hills in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division VIII Playoffs. The muck and mire, as well as a staunch Sunny Hills defense, combined to yield a paltry 64 yards of total offense and only three first downs, as the methodical Mustangs' playoff hopes were literally stuck in the mud. Having grown increasingly sour on a system he inherited three seasons ago from Myron Miller, then agreed to perpetuate for fhe short term, Howell watched with envy that night as the Lancers' Wing-T ~sed 235 yards of offense and 15 first downs. The Mustangs' deepest penetration was the Sunny Hills' 47. So, it was hardly a revelation when Howell quickly an_nounced plans to covert to the Wing· T, which he will unveil a week from tonight in the season opener against Saddleba.ck. ·It's allowed us to open the box," Howell said of the new,l but 6tiU run-oriented offeJ)Se, which features 18-inch line splits, where none existed in the double wing. "It allows us to spread the defense out and it gives us the option to throw the ball a little bit better. No (opponent) will have 11 people 3 yards from the line of sa'immage this year." Davidson, Jeff Loggins and Good are among the backups at end, while Norman could see time at tackle. • Unebackers - Graduated all-leaguers Julius Vasquez and Jeremy Lefever left a void here, but Siedsma (6-2, 205), a second-team all-league defensive tackle as a junior, has evolved to an Felter upright position to fill one vacancy. Senior Ryan Ferryman (6-1, 200) is a front-runner at the other inside spot, retumbig from a one-year absence from the sport. Senior Jeremy Via (6-2, 275), all-league and all-district on defense in '96, headlines an offensive line averaging around 6-2, 240 from tackle-to-tackle- Though it may take some time to tum the page with the new offensive scheme, the Mustangs' defense, under the tutelage of esteemed coordinator Tom Baldwin, should provide a solid safety net. •we know we can play defense with anyone,~ said Howell. whose 1996 squad, including nine current players who started at least five games and 13 who started at least one, was fifth-best in Orange County in scoring defense. Swiss phenom Martina Hingis, in the U.S. Open semis today. By Richard Dunn, Daily Pilot For most on the Women's Ten- nis Association Tour, facing top- seeded Martina Hingis in the U.S. Open semifinals would probably be a task too great to conquer. But for Newport Beach's Llnd· say Davenport, it's at least 50-50 . Davenport and Hingis are tied, 3- 3, in their career, including a split of two meetings this year. Davenport, one of only two women to have defeated Hingis this year, plays in her first Grand Slam semifinal today in Flushing Meadows, N.Y., at about 10:30 a.m. local time. · Men's doubles action kicks off the day at 8 a.m., followed by the women's singles semifinal match- es. Unseeded Venus Williams wUl play 11th-seeded lrina Spirlea in the other semifinal. Davenport •and her doubles partner, Jana Novotna, qualified for a berth in Saturday's finals oo Thursday, besting Hingis and Arant:x.a Sanchez-Vicario, 6-4, 6-3. Davenport, seeded sixth, defeated third-seeded Jana Novotna in Wednesday's quarter· finals, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), a match with no aces and lasting 2:3Q, while Hingis, the 16-year-olQ.. Swiss phenom, needed only 62 minutes to beat Arantxa Sanchez Vicano, 6-3, 6-2. . When Davenport won the. Acura Classic Aug. 9 at Manbat~ tan Beach, she eliminated Hing:W in the semifinals, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. It was only Hingis' second lpss ol 1997. Earlier in the year at La Costa •. Hingis topped Davenport, 6-2, 1- 6, 6-3, in the Toshiba Termis Clas-. sic. Hingis and Davenport, ~~ 1996 Olympic gold medalist, also met twice last year, with ~ winning both matches -~t Filderstadt. Germany, and at the. Ameritech Cup in Chicago last October. Davenport won both meetings in 1995 against the world's ~ rent No. 1-ranked player. Daven- port beat Hingis that year at the Sydney International in Australia, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3, then later at the, French Open in Roland Garros Paris, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. Davenport, coached by Robert Van't Hof of the Palisades Tennis Club, would be a heavy favorit~ to win the singles title lf she gets past Hingis today. 'Baggage' a heavy load A licia Silverstone dumps her excess baggage into a th~ater near you. Under the banner of her new production company, First Kiss Productions, she delivers a script that is anything but virginal. With enough cliches to .fill the bag- gage compartment of a small airliner, the film l5 as forgettable as a worn-out plaJd Samsonite. The movie begins with reaJ promise. Sdverstone, who purportedly wants only to be loved by her nch father (a coolae- cutter performADce by Jack Thompson), fakes her kidnapping by locking hersell in the trunk of her BMW -the larger one, of course. The car is then stolen by a professional thief named Vincent, played memorably by Ken Bucchl Benicio Del Toro. Del Toro delivers the only truly originaJ per- formance of the movie, a sort of Brad Pitt does ·sling Blade.• When ~verstone escapes, her reac- bon lo her •kidnapper" is entirely unre- alistic in the real world, but all too famil- iar m Hollywood. Self conscious about its romantic comedy genealogy, the picture avoids the obvious fear its main charac- ter would have for the thief and dives headlong into the obligatory l-love- you/1-loathe-you banter all too custom- ary m the genre. Rounding out the cookie sheet are the repnsal roles of Christopher Walken playing an unflappable killer whose deadpan humor belies a cold-blooded heart, and Nicholas Turturro, who deliv- ers virtually every line three decibels above the legal limit. Throw into your carry-on bag those three goons you see in every diner scene who rush to the aid of a frightened woman, the calculating rich father with no love in his heart, and the ne'er-do- well who ateals from the rich but feels terrible about it afterward, and your "Excess Baggage• will no longer fit into the overhead compartment. Someone recently told me that •high concept• doesn't get you beyond tb.e first reel. After seeing this picture, I whole- heartedly agree. The only thing that made these two hours of my life that I can never retrieve palatable was the original pe.rf ormance by Del Toro and the fact that I went to a matinee. The kicker is that I actually had a choice to review either this film or •She's So Lovely.• And therein lies the reason why my wile will not allow me witb1n a hundred miles ol Las Vegas. But the local quintet doesn't take a lot of musical chances. The band, fronted by singer/songwriter Ken Ew;qest and his brother, bassist Mark Earnest, also includes key- boardist Doug Scribner, gw- tarist Joe Pastorelll!8.Dd drum- mer John Gooley. Recorded locally at Sonic Thrills Studios in Newport Beach, produced by ~astorelli and released on the band's own label, Slimbeat Records, the 10- song release is without question home grown. Now, rest assured, th.iS is not the kind of music you have to be worried about tur¢ng down when your parents walk m the room or censoring from young, impressionable ears. It's safe to say White Li es would draw a crowd of toe-tap- pmg families during an after- noon gig at Disneyland but probably couldn't muster much of an audience among lhe nose-ring and .tattoo crowd at Club Mesa. But lhat said, lhe album suc- ceeds at what it tries. The opening track, "Wasting My TI.me,• sets the tone for t?\e rest of the album with a dnVlng drum beat and light guitars serving as a canvas for Ken Earnest's vocals. Other songs -·sound Innocent" and "Don't Give Up• -are cast from that same mold, but the band also tries its band at a bluesy romp with ·walking on Water" and takes a stab at the patented, 1980s- style rock power ballad with ·Surrender.· But while those songs are glanong blows at musical tar- gets, the acoustic song "Weapons" is a direct lut. While lhe lyrical topic is far from original -singing about how words cut to the bone m a relationship gone bad is a rock band's bread and butter - musically White Lies breaks out on ·weapons· The stripped-down, bare- bones song Wllh notlung more than Earnest's voice, acoustic guitar, harmonica and some keyboards as background proves that.~~meti:m,es, less is . better. -- "Weapons" is a refreshing change on an album where most of the other songs are bani to distinguish from each other. The foundation for White Lies formed about 10 years ago, when the Earnest brothers moved from Pennsylvania - where they bad performed as the Slimbeats -and started a new band.
