about how to develop their 73
acres of farmland north of the San
Diego Freeway. ·•
The property, now eclipsed by
office buildings lining Bristol
Street, is a prime slice of real
estate. Family members said they
are in no hurry to sell or develop
the land, but they are considering
all offers and will be highly selec-
tive. .

Council on Monday night gave
itself another month to decide
on whether or not to reconsider
its earlier move to deny Westar
Nutrition lnc. permission to
begin using a new portion of the
co~pany's vitamin manufactur-
ing center .
Westar came under tire
recently after neighbors of the
Victoria Street facility com-
plained the manufacturer is too
noisy and .smelly for their mostly
residential neighborhood and
opposed allowing Westar to
expand its operations.
The council was scheduled
to debate a request by Westar
officials to reconsider its Aug. 18 ·
decision, which required the vit-
amin manufactw'er to apply for
additional city permits before
operating its "dean room,• an

death threats and menacing calls
-one from a man promiSing to
detonate a bomb -have assailed
a local Christian radio station since
a host asked on the air last month
whether homosexuality should be
a capital offense.
The threats oome amid a torrent
of criticism aimed at KBRT·AM
74.0, the Airway Avenue Aation

Agoztno led the discussion about
holnD6e%uality on Aug. 29.
Costa Mesa police Lt. Ron
Smith said the bomb threat came
around 10 a.m. on Wednelday,
Sept. 10, when an unidentified
male vok:O called the llation and

be repeeted. The station is sched-

Employees evacuated the sta-
tion for about 30 minutes, but

said the calls were part of a larger
pattern of "threatening pranksters
-sweartng, cuning, abusing my

Bill La.Pointe, the publisher of
The Blade, a Laguna Beach·based
news magazine for the homosexu-
al community, who has been at the
forefront in criticizing the station,
said be was swprised and disap-
pointed· at the death threats.
"We do. not adhere in any way,
shape or fonn to violence," he
said. "We are a peaceful, loving
people. There's a crackpot in
every group.·
LaPointe said the radio host
•crossed the line• in his program
on homosexuality. Penonius
insists the host did not advocate
killing homosexuals but merely
raised a hypothetical question for
discussion. ·

Mesa to give
customers rebate
Mesa Consolidated' Water Dis·
trict customers will receive a one-
time credit on their
September/October water bills.
The refund. based on meter size,
is about 56% of the basic charge
for each different m~ter size.
The Metropolitan Water Dis·
trict of Southern California is issu-
ing the credit due to over collec-
tion of water rates, fees and
charges. The refund is part of a
$10 million refund distributed
among 27 member agencies.

pass along the refund to cus-
tamers due to water service effi.

Sverdrup lands
missile project
A $16.6 million contract to
design and construct a govern-
ment missile tracking and control
facility has been awarded to Cos-
ta Mesa-based Sverdrup Fadli·
ties.
The company will construct
the National Range Control Cen-
ter facility at the White Sands
Missile Range in New Mexico.
Sverdrup, which has 5,000
employees and 30 offices, has
been involved in nearly every
major U.S. missile program, said
Les Steinberger, who is oversee-
ing the project.

The idea of walking is to see

see properly while driving. ·
Therefore, one should try to
walk in new and interesting
·places.
Newport Beach is a great
place to walk, il you walk in the
right areas. I am sorry for those
people who live and walk in the
newer parts of the city. No mat-
ter how many ways a developer
modifies plans, the houses look
alike.
The houses aren't identical;
they're distressingly similar. We
once Jived on Indiana Street in
East Los Angeles where all the
houses were identical.
One evening my father ca.me
home from the shops, turned 20
feet too soon and barged into
our next door neighbor's house .

This probably wouldn't hap-
pen in Newport; since even in
the newer sections the houses
aren't identical.
They're just distressingly

garage doors and no sidewalks;

areas.
Just wander 4(QUDd for a
couple of hours looking at old
houses, at different houses, at
houses with personality. And as
a bonus, it's flat.
Laguna is a walker's par·
ad.ise, but it's pretty up and
down and tough on 85-year-old
legs.·
So walk, but walk in an area
that's interesting. Otherwise,
stick to the treadmill and the
martini.

heavy in S10gles and well-versed in dou-
bles, it's not easy breaking into the Coro-
na del ·Mar High girls tennis lineup,
where the only opening this season has
been No. 3 doubles.
But at this rate, junior Christina Mar-
tinez and sophomore Nicole Charney
could end the in-house competition.
In Monday's nonleague home victory
over Laguna Beach, 15-3, Corona del Mar
won eight of nine doubles sets, the area of
greatest concern for CdM Coach nm
Mang.
"We have six girls vying for that bot-
tom doubles spot,• Mang said, before
Charney and Martinez won two of three
sets, including a 7-6 (7-2) win over Lagu-
na Beach's No. 1 doubles team in the last
round. ·

behind, 0-4, before winning six straight
games.
Sophomore Caylan Leslie, who nor-
mally plays third singles for CdM, sat out
Monday after capturing the Cerritos
Open championship over the weekend in
the girls 16s. Leslie, who reached the
semifinals at the Pacific Coast Champi-
onships this summer and the Round of 16
at the USTA National Hardcourts, will
return to the lineup today.
Senior Diala Hakim, CdM's next-best
singles player, filled in for Leslie and won
a set against Sabrina Messineo, 6-3, in
the opening round.
In addition to the exploits of Charney
and Martinez, CdM was led in doubles by
juniors Ruchika Budhraja and Courtney
Tenerelli, who dropped only two games
in three sets.
Robyn Coleman and Jenny Meyer
stepped up for CdM at No. 2 doubles, los-
ing just three games while sweeping.

weapon the Eagles needed to
keep opposing defenses from
packing phone-booth defenses
between the tackles to stop their
smashmouth double wing.
But seconds later, Wolter
dropped back and lofted an
arching aerial toward a streaking
Manu Tanielu for a 28-yard
touchdown. And defenses may
never approach the Estancia
offense the same way again.
"We've worked on that a lot,·
Llebengood said of the play,
which calls for two wingbacks,
aligned farther outside than
normal. to sprint toward the fiag
that intersects the sideline and
the goal line, hoping Wolter will
find their outside shoulder with a
spiral.

After one month of construction in 1965,

A decade later, Neiman-Marcus chose
Fashion Island as the site of its first West

In the early 1990s, Fashion Island
sales continued to grow 9% each year
despite a recession. The Cheesecak~
Factory and arcuit City moved in,
and. finally, the vaunted Blooming-
dale's arrived.
Last year, the mall's chic image paid
off in a major coup: landing one of
IDoomingdale's first Southern Califor-
nia stores. The only Orange County
version of the New York department
store chain opened with much~

year high for mall sales.

cream parlor for sale
on Main Street m. Balboa, she
glimpsed the reallzatton of a
dream she'd harbored since she
was a teenager.
. •Everybody thought I was
arazy, because they couldn't see
the vision I had,• said Pulliam,
who bought the property with
money she'd been stashing
away since she was 17.
This year, Pulliam, DOW 35,
will be celebrating the 10th
anniversary of the restaurant she
opeiied on that spot, Britta's
Cafe. The Newport Beach
woman said the restaurant sur-
vtves by the loyal patronage of
locals on the Balboa Peninsula.
Pulliam, who serves up to 300

Nearly 25 years o, e Ingardias
came to Costa Mesa · a truck full of
produce and beads full of vegetable-
laden dreams. Nowadays, the Ingardias
operate their successful wholesale pro-
duce, seafood and grocery business at
2120 Placentia Ave. with the energy of a
freshly caught fish and the smoothness
of a perfectly ripe tomato.
Prior to opening their retail produce
business, Produce Mart, in 1913, Joe
Ingantia sold vegetables door-~oor
for 11 yean as a part-time job in Chica-
go. The brothers agreed. though. that
their interest in produce was likely
sparked during childhood visits from
their uncle who sold fruits and vegeta-
bles in Sicily, Italy. The brothers emi-
grated from Tunisia in North Africa to
Chicago with their Italian parents and
three siblings in 1955.
"I guess you could say that selling
produce is in our blood," Sam Ingardia
said.

"Costa Mesa is a great city for us to
do business in because it is one of the
most affluent communities in Orange
County," said Sam Ingardia, 54, who
lives in Coto de Caza. "Restaurants here
don't usually feel the pinch when the
economy takes.a downward turn like
they do in less affluent cities.•
This stability, as well as concentrating

rent business, Produce Mart succeeded
beyond the brothers' expectations -
partly because of the public's increasing
desire to eat healthier foods.
"Back then there was a movement
away from the meat and potatoes kind
of diet toward healthier foods like fresh
fruit and vegetables,• Sam Ingardia
said. •Also, unlike today's supermar-
kets, back then grocery stores had very
small produce departments. People
liked to buy their meat from the butch-
ers, their fish at the seafood shop and
their fruits and vegetables at the pro-
duce store."
Although they began their retail
business only selling fruits and vegeta-
bles, soon the pair's products included
fresh seafood, Italian canned goods and
imported pasta. And as their products
expanded, so did the demand.
By 1975 they were selling their prod-
ucts, not only to their regular customers
but also wholesale to local restaurants.
In 1985, the brothers sold their retail
business to concentrate their energies on
selling their products wholesale to large
chain restaurants, small dineIS and
"mom and pop• delis and convenience
stores.
"Business bas been very good to us
and to our family," said 60-year-old
Joe Ingardia of Fountain Valley. •ne

for us."

Paper Doll has been in business since 1992,
and aims its clothing and accessories toward
women. But that may soon change ..

Part of this branching out includes designing
accessories. Paper Doll produces a variety of
purses, including a heart-shaped one in pink
plush. Another local designer, Stag Party, pro-
duces belt buckles featuring icons of pop cul-
ture such as the Dukes of Hazzard and Rat

Gerard said, adding that the company will be
taking its wares to a large industry trade show
in New York this January. Meanwhile, it just
finished its stint at another trade show, held
last weekend in San Diego.
Paper Doll was not the only local design
label that attended the show. Also present was
Hi-Fl. The Hi-F1 company designs men's wear,
and is co-owned by Ken Resh and Josi\ Speyer.
Speyer also owns Stateside, a used-clothing
outlet at The Lab. Currently, Resh said, Hi-Fi
distributes its garments, wholesale, to shops

•The economy is better,• said the institute's

the industry is picking up. There are 4,000
manufacturers m Southern California. People
don't know how big (the industry) is.· The ranks of Orange County designers keep
growing. The Orange County campus of the
Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising
reports an upswing in admissions in the past
few years. The campus, which is in Costa Mesa,
Designers in Orange and Los Angeles coun-
ties have differing styles, Mirabella said.

said. •Now, you don't give it a second look.•
But there is, of course, always room for
improvement.

and, to me, the most impor-
tant part of the story is that
each sold out for a bunch of
rqoney before the '90s, an era

bttsiness really go belly-up
wltb closures and bankrupt-
cies the name.of the game.
Those four men are John
Mcintosh (Reubens, Cocos
and Reuben E. Lee), Art Sal-
isbury (Jolly Roger), Pete Sir-
acusa (Ancient Mariner and
Rusty Pelican) jlnd Don Cal-
lender (Marie Callender).

John Mcintosh started with
a little lunch counter ,called
the Snack Shop pn Coast
Highway in Corona del Mar
and built it into a formidable
chain . He is conceded by all
in the restaurant buJiness to
have been a pioneer in the
fields of quality control and
management tra1ning, each
essential in any chain opera-
tion. To this day, John's
teachings are followed by all ·
in this field.
John was the first to sell
out. Since then, he has
indulged in his pa·ssion: fish-
ing. He still lives here in
Corona del Mar but seems to
spend a great deal of his time
fishing at his homes in Baja
and Alaska.
Art Salisbury started with
his original Jolly Roger on
Balboa Island, built it into a
nationat chain, sold out and
moved to the Big Island. Sadly,
be passed away last November.

-Hamilton buys the memorabilia out of
his own pocket at auctions, and accepts
donations. He used to keep the goods,
which include about 30 seats from for-
mer great stadiums, in his Corona del
Mar home, but opened the museum in
1995.
"What good is having a Renoir in

beauty of it?" Hamilton asked, likening
his collection to priceless art.
The foundation began when the
museum, to which admission is free,
opened.
It is a non-profit ch.arity organization
with Tommy Lasorda, Cheryl Miller,
Corey Pavin and Brooks Robinson
among 52 current and former athletes
on its board of advisors.

"We never sell the memorabilia,
either,• said Gretchen Noatk, program
director. "When athletes donate items,
they know it's just up for admiration, it's
just for the kids' eyes."
Korn and Noack have been with the
foundation for only a few months and
say they are committed to getting the
word out about--the museum and what it
offers to children from every back-
ground.
"I am re'ally excited about this place,•
said Korn, who has a 15-year-old son
who plays football at Edison High. •The
whole idea is great. We'd like to get two
or three groups in here a week. or even
in a day if we could.•
About 70 kids with the Fountain Val-
ley Summer School Program recently
toured the museum, and another group
was greeted and lectured by Dodgers'
first baseman Eric Karros.
"When they hear these athletes, they
can think, 'Maybe this is the direction
my life could go,'" Korn said.
Dave Clark, Jonathan's father, said he
has brought his son and friends to the
Newport Sports Collection twice.
"We were here yesterday," Clark
said. "We were here an hour and didn't
see it all."
The collection reminded Clark of a
time when he was a youth at Elgin Bay-
lor'~ basketball camp.
"I remember Elgin coming out and
playing cards with us. It was just
great,· he said.

Mesa unit.

I n a day when gang violence,
teen crime and soaring
school dropout rates plague
many young men, it's easy to
see why a place like the Orange
County Council Boy Scouts of
America Sea Base Is so impor-
tant -and so popular.
Last year at the oceanfront
base on West Coast Highway in
Newport Beach -a local land-
mark since its founding as a
scout retreat in the 1930s -
22,000 young Boy Scouts, older
Sea Scouts and even non-scout-
ing boys reveled in sea-going
activities.
Sailing, power boating,
canoeing and other high-seas
courses offer young men a wide
range of fun, sale and challeng-
ing activities every day of the
week.

base is a haven for young boys

And there's plenty of courses
offered to challenge them;
everything from basic knot-tying
to advanced sailing and week-
long fishing trips off the coast of
Baja Mexico.
But not all the learning at the
sea base is on the high seas.
The youngest boys -ages 7
and 8 -start out in the Sea
B'1Se Sailor program and can
advance all the way to the
Explorer program, which is for
21-year-olds.
The base also offers 25 non-
aquatic courses which during
the summer months range from
photography and journalism -
where students publish their
own newsletter, The Sea Base nmes -to nature study and
environmental science.
