bird with all the trimmings to be thankful.

The Lawsons have f arruly scattered from Maui
to Indiana, and they visit them throughout the
year. Th<1Se df<" the tunes they celebrate Thanks-
~ving. .
So the Costd Mesa couple spent Thursday
gardening and puttering around tbP house.
They did keep with tradillon somewhat by
ordering turkey when they dmed at Norm's
Restaurant.
Many other\ also have their own ideas of what
the holidays should be.
David Laffoon of Newport Beach enjoyed a
meal by him~clf between footbdll games. He was
invited to spend the holiday with friends but
turned them down.
"l don't want to qet wrapped up mother peo-
ple's families." he said. "I want to do what I want
to do.·
For La.Hoon, that meant lust cheenng on the
Detroit Lions and then the M1am1 Dolphins before
taking an afternoon nap. .
"That's what you do on Thanksgiving, isn't 1t?"
Laffoon said.

S evercll months ago, Lily Tomlin
was talking with some students
at use. sfiowing them a few of •
the characters she made famous in her
Broadwoy shows like #Appearing Nite-
ly" and •111e Search for Signs of Intel-
hgenf Lile in the Universe.•
She did Trudy the Bag Lady. she
did Chrissy the self-improvement nut,
she did Paul the burnout -comic crea-
turei> who won her a Tony the first lime
•search" was on Broadway in the '80s .
The students' reaction, in some
re!;pects, wos frustrating: the kids had
never heard of these characters.
But at the same time the response
was rewarding. Tomlin realized that
Trudy and Chrissy and Paul seemed
just as alive cmd as entertaining as they
ever had been.
•They just responded to it so well,"
Tomlin said. "The play seemed as fun-
ny and moving as ever."
The experience encouraged Tomlin
to bring "Search" back on the road.
She will be perf prming it Dec. 3 and 4
at the Orange County Perlonning Arts
Center in Costa Mesa.
The show, which originally opened
in 1985, is performed entirely by Tom-
lin. But, as her fdllS know, a one-
woman show from this actress is like a
play stocked with an almost endless
variety of eccentric, challenging char-
acters. ·
•search" wds penned by Jane Wag-
ner, a writer Tomlin has worked with
smce 1971 on features such as "The
lncre<lible Shrinking Woman• and
"Appearing Nitely. • The two women
collaborated on directing and develop-
ing the characters. But 1t 1S Tomlin's
elastic features and remarkable ability
to be possessed by the spirit of a young
child or a crotchety telephone operator
-an ability that once drew compar ..
isons to cormc Richard Pryor -that
brings the cast of "Search" to We.
Trudy the bdg woman is the oddball
nclrrator of the evening, a chc:lracter
whose slightly demented take on con-
temporary sooety is intended to con-
ceal d penetrdbng insight.
"lhJdy wru; a designer and a cre-
ative consultant in corporate America,"
Toinlin explained. ~ln her job she inno-
vated lots of questionable things. She
developed laugh tracks because she
heard voices when nobody was there."
She also cume up with the notion of
selling the 1dea of "munching• to the
third world, Tomlin said.
•Ct's like c1.0 untapped market: she
explained, seeming to slip lJllo charao-
ter almost mstanUy. "The idea of eating
between meals 1ust never occurred to
them."
Trudy was also a character in
"Appeaf!ng Nitely," but Tomlin says
she has grown more complicated as
she has aged.
"She's developed mto a much richer
character," Tomlin said. "She's just a
much more conscious, more more
evolved character."
To some extent, this development
has to do wt th the evolution of Tomlin's
outlook on things.

"I identify with all the characters, H
Tomlin said. "I think all actors do. You
find m yourseJl some part of you to
flesh out the characters.•
But the characters Tomlin •does"
have long seemed to have -distinct per-
sonalities of their own, perhaps
because Tomlin goes so deeply into
them. Figures like Ernestine, the nasal
telephone operator from •Laugh-In," or
the relentlessly prim Mrs. Beasley,
seem almost like spuits that occupy
Tomlin's malleable body.
·search,• with a cast of characters
that ranges across the spectrum of
social cla!".ses and states of mental well-
being, lS ideally suited to Tomlin's
chameleon-like talents of transforma-
tion.
"This is a form of theater that I've
loved since I was a child," Tomlin said.

As Tomlin pointed out, her charac-
ters, though corruc, are never wholly
contemptible. They are, especially in
•Search,• fairly confused people, but
therr intentions are essentially good
·chrtssy,• for example, runs from
one sell-unprovement project to the
next, a VlCtim of advertising culture
and a shallow notion of what it means
to be •successful.•
·she says ·r always wanted to be
somebody, but I see now I should bave
been more specific,'· Tomlin joked.
As Tomlin plays her, though, Chrissy
is shown lo have a certain integrity.
The explanation for her problems
seems to Lie less in her own personality
than in the shallow culture she con-
sumes.
"She's rather deep in her seMch-
ing," Tomlin said "She has a good
soul"
Tlus unwillingness to sacrifice the
digruty of the people she portrays and
the sOClal cnttque that underlies the
comedy go hand in hand:

concem both with the unhealthiness of
contemporary culture dnd the partial
failure of •progressive" forces to reme~.

But Tomlin 1s interested in the links
between people as well as the forces
that divide them.
"All these people are just sort of ~
mterconnnected, • she said "It's really:
about us as a species.• •;

ship, watched jet planes
arrive and depart and ate
with the captain and his
ranking .staff.
The earner is named after
John Stennis, a senator who
served 41 years. The ship, a
Nimitz-class carrier, mea-
sures 1,100 feet in length
and JS home to more than
6,000 crew.
The group also slept on
board, but the change 111
scenery wasn't easy to adapt
to, Gronsky said. He and
bunk.mate Hamilton's tempo-
rary sleeping arrangements
were under the stup's blast
deflector. The piece of equip-
ment lifts and shuts when a
plane anives or leaves. Thc1t
movement is accompanied
by a strange hissing sound. It
apparently didn't bother
Hamilton who slept soundly.
The same couldn't be said of
Gronsky, who was restless
-from the sporadic noise.

Paul Dolkas 1s forgetful. His
office JS filled with notes and
memos renundmg him to call
chenl'i, to send documents and
to make lunch dates.
It's been 10 years smce the car
dccident left the 45-year-old
Newport Beach resident in a
coma with a b(xly full of crushed
bones. DOlkas, who ran triathlons
as a hobby, still ~n't sure whether
he'll ever be able to function fullv
without his small crutches. ·
And while hP. doesn't
remember the hrsl Thanksgtv-
ing tollowmg the accident, the
one thing he'll never forget
and for which he'll alwa}'s be
thnnklul for is the support his
Wlfc, Demel, and friends have
shown throughout the ordeal.
