urday night, despite legal threats from
the show's copyright owners.

After reading about the planned
concert in the Daily Pilot, library offi-
cials called the Piecemakers to say
that unless the group agreed to pay
about $575 in copyright fees, the show
could not legally go on.
About 70 people attended the per-
formance, which was staged in the
Piecemaker's Country Store parking
Despite claims of copyright
infringement from the company which
owns the rights to •Big River,"
Kolasinski defended her group's right
to sing.

More than 16,500 runners and 4,500 spectators turned
out Sunday morning for the 1997 Orange County Race for
the Cure, which raised about $400,000 for breast cancer
research and treatment, officials said.
The sixth annual event, set u.p along Newport Center
Drive and other streets surrounding Fashion Island, bene-
fited the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
Several locals fared well in their respective races. Jojo
Yaba, 23, of Costa Mesa won the 18-24 age division of the
womens' 5K event while B.J. Nicolaus,
19, of Costa Mesa, John Koningh, 40,
of Newport Beach, David Rusher, 57,
of Costa Mesa, Ed Thoq>, 65, of New-
port Beach and Robert Kay, 71, of
Newport Beach, each took home top
honors in their age divisions of the
mens' SK race and Madison Morrell, 7, of Newport Beach
won his division of the kids one-mile run.

sales front

COSTA MESA -Things were a
whole lot quieter for neighbors of
South Coast ToyotaNolvo this week-
end after city officials ordered the
dealership to stop using mUSlc and
loud speakers during its controversial
S1a Sb.er Sales_
In an effort to settle a runrung dis-
pute between the Harbor Boulevard
dealer and some of its neighbors, City
Manager Allan Roeder on Friday
banned the use of amplified music
and loudspeakers during the twlce-a-
month used car sales events.
·we just said, 'Let's try this' and the
dealer feels like it might be possible to
conduct the event without the music
and the bullhorn," Roeder said. •We'll
sit down afterward and see what hap-
pened."
Roeder and dealership representa-
tives met last week to discuss the ban
and are set to sit down again this
week and see if banning music and
loud speakers was enough to appease
neighbors,
If not satisfied with the results of
this weekend's Slasher Sales, Roeder
will pass the matter on to the City
Council.
But as this weekend's Slasher Sales
drew to a close Sunday afternoon, the
problem seemed to be fixed.

The Slasher Sales are high-energy
events designed to attract car buyers.
As a salesman yells ·slash it" into a

The driver of the car which hit
Morrow was a 17-year-old female
from Huntington Beach who was
arrested on suspicion of vehicular
manslaughter and later released
to the custody of an adult, police
said. .
The car was traveling at a still
unknown rate of speed when the
driver hit Morrow, but police
investigators have determined
neither drugs nor alcohol were
factors in the accident.

1 IT'S SO QUIET OVER HERE'
Newport Island is a peaceful, secluded enclave in the
midst of an often boisterous West Newport community

Most people either haven't
been to Newport Island or
don't remember if they
have.
It has its share of waterfront
homes, all with docks. But,
because all the boats have to fit
under the Newport Boulevard
bridge, they're restricted to little
sailboats and electric boats.
It's got its big-name residents
-the Edwards family of movie-
theater chain fame. But most of its
homes sell for less
than $1 million,
with one on the
market )j.sted at
$700,000.
It's got its own

that's mostly a
for-tun endeavor
run out of a shed in the
city-owned Newport Island Park.
And its name was a hand-me-
down from Balboa Island, which
was known as Newport Island
around the turn of the century.
Newport Island's most defining
feature, in fact, is its down-to-
earth atmosphere. With its narrow
streets, sparse parking, and mix
of duplexes and sprawling har-
bor-front homes, it's more like a
West Newport neighborhood
than a Newport Beach island.
Newport Island started out as a
reedy lump of sand sticking up
above the waterline, part of what
was once the Santa Ana River
bank. But in the rnid-1920s, the
city and The Irvine Co. dredged
the harbor, forming Newport
Island as well as Linda Isle. In the
next decade, houses began
springing up on the triangular
piece of land floating off West
Newport.
George and Irene Sherrill set-
tled on Newport Island 52 years
ago after losing out on a chance to
l:?uild on some property they
owned in Glendale. It was
wartime, and building was limit-
ed because of the supplies it
would use up -so they took up
residence in a friend's beach cot-
tage in Newport.
They eventually bought a
Newport Island lot for $2,500 at a
time when 39th Street was void of
housing development. They built
a house and in 1945 moved in
with their 9-year-old and 6-year-
old daughters.
"We ca.me down here feeling
sorry for ourselves," Irene says.
"But we had two daughters, and
they loved it here.•
The early island residents, she
says, were the friendliest bunch
she'd ever met. The couple knew
they'd found their longtime home
early on.
"There was rationing because
of the war," Irene says. "And
when my turn came to get butter

at the market, I got it even though
I was new."
The couple, married 64 years,
still live in that same two-level
home, complete with framed pho-
tos of grandchildren and a base-
ment laboratory for George, a
retired medical research scientist.
George says the island "has
become quite modem and a
delightful place to live."
Now Newport Island is filled
with more than 100 homes, some
of them on the waterfront with
their own docks.
Sue and and Larry Leifer have
lived on the island shore since
1989. From their backyard deck,
they can see boats floating in
front of Balboa Coves homes
across Newport Channel and cars
whizzing past in the distance on
the nearby Newport Boulevard
bridge.
Island residents maintain a
community spirit that easily rivals
that of any other city neighbor-
hood. They banded together to
have their utility poles put under-
ground and divided the cost
among themselves.
And not too long ago, a group
of residents rekindled the defunct
Newport Island Yacht Club,
which bad died out in the early
'70s. They tracked down the
designer of the original emblem,
bad some flags made up and
called themselves a yacht club.
•Our clubhouse is a little stor-
age shed m the park.• Larry says.
"It's the least expensive yacht
club to join on the harbor.·
Newport Island isn't exactly
known for gleaming yachts,
famous estates or tourist appeal
-and that's perfectly fine with
the Lelfers.
"Newport Island is like a
refuge, isolated from the hubbub
of the city," says Larry, a medical
administrator. "Even on July 4,
when things got really wild m
West Newport, the bridge was
like our barrier. It's so quiet over
here."

Anthony: The Mustangs started
hitting one another.
Senior quarterback and safety
Ronnie Llevanos. noted for his
hitting ability, accidentally col-
lided with 6-foot-2, 228-pound
teammate Matthew Rudesill,
while pursuing a Saint ball carri-
er some time in the third quarter,
according to Coach Jerry Howell
"Ronnie got a concussion and
it almost knocked Rudy out, too,"
said Howell, who noted the
effects of the collision lingered
well into Saturday, but should not
sideline either this week.
"I talked to Ronnie (Sunday)
and he could finally remember
the whole game," Howell said.
"When I talked to him Saturday.
he couldn't remember any of the
first half, just the third quarter.
·And Rudy's mom called me
Saturday to tell me he'd bad a bad
headache for about 12 hours.•
When Mesa players weren't
careening into themselves, St.
Anthony didn't provide much of a
challenge, though Howell said
the Saints were better than
expected.
Howell, however, said it was a
"fluke" pass completion that set
up the Saints' 28-yard field goal
midway through the fourth quar-
ter. The score, St. Anthony's first

shutout streak at 11 quarters,
resulting in a somber postgame

"I'd say 90% of the time, making whole-
sale changes during the season doesn't
tum out to be a good idea. Usually it's done as a last resort and. after just the second
game, I didn't think we were exactly in that
position.~
Still, Freeman and his assistants
reworked the lineup. reshuffled some
schemes and re-energized a Sea King
squad that had been outscored its first two
games, 34-6.

Freeman also emphasized the running
game more and the result was 208 rushing
yards on 38 attempts, to only 23 pass plays

Freeman said his players embraced tlle
