I nfluence is a curious commodity, one that is measured less in wealth or position than in change, leadership, risk-taking and, sometimes, sheer inspiration. The Daily Pilot 103 -the annual listing of the most influential in Newport Beach and Costa Mesa -is a web of inspiring and remarkable stories. There's the onetime kindergarten teacher who's now the state secretary of education. There's the former Rose Parade queen who's become a respected environmen--- talist. There's the senior citizen ~ . ::: 7.:.::.1:.,';;'~·:== tiop~ " cans so that he can help fund \[ school scholarships. o, And, of course, there's the 18-IJli.-..:..._ ~ . year-old former cbeerlea.der -~ whose indomitable will to live, to go home, to see just one more day is so inspiring that some deem it to be nothing short of a miracle. But bow to decide who wields the most influence? That's the challenge we faced in compiling the fifth annual Daily Pilot 103. We checked our sources, called up community leaders, talked with readers, conferred with our reporters and scanned the list from past years. It's important to remember that the list is intended to be taken in the spirit of fun. It is not meant to offend or cause hurt. No doubt we left many off the list who deserved to be there. And we proba- bly included some who might raise an eyebrow here and there. The best presaiption, we think, is to read, enjoy and let us know what you think. These are high honors, as impressive as a magna-cum·laude, certainly Carol Mock is at the top of her class. Having represented some of the best properties in Newport Beach, Carol's ability to list and sell upper.tier homes has surpassed all of Coldwell Banker's expectations. Carol's first year in busi· ncss sold over $3,000,000 in inventory io a lack· luster market, and she's been a consistent "Top IO" producer in Newport Beach since 1992. Carol's humble beginnings fonned valuable assets for her booming career in real estate sales. Carol was born in Long Beach and has lived in Southern California since childhood. Upon receiving her Bachelor of Arts degree from Whittier college, she moved to Newport Beach to begin her teaching career for the Newport Mesa ~hool District Carol taua,ht at the ele- mentary school level for over a decade, ifte'r which &be retired to raise her family. Drawing upon a mix of hard work and eothusi· asm, Carol's real estate career has bcco a suc- cess from the start. Indeed, despite a lack.luster real estate market in recent years, Carol has con- tinued to dramatically expand her business dur· ing that same period. She is the recipient of Coldwell Banker's highest honors: which is only bestowed to the top 1 % of all Coldwell Banker agents in the United States and Canada. Carol's outstanding track record in the luxury home nwtct earned her inclusion in the July • 1996 Unique Homes Mapzine. in an article entitled "Megatifoten of California." By Barry Faulkner, Daily Pilot NEWPORT BEACH -It took euctly one possession for New- port Harbor High football coach Jeff Brinkley and his defensive staff to employ the right strategy to stop visiting Savanna's smash- mouth double wing Thursday. But, even more perfect than the scheme, which the Sailors rode to a 35-12 nonleague victory over the Rebels, was its name. ·we called it the Yankee," Brinkley said of the defensive for- mation, which put seven men on the line of scrimmage to ensure the Rebels would not rise again. "We'd never faced that offense before, and we anticipated a few problems on their first drive (a 10- play, 80-yard march with the opening kickoff that gave Savan- na its only lead). It kind of reminded me of Rubidoux (the 1992 CIF Southern Section quar- terfinal game won by Harbor), which got up, 14-0, on us, before we got in sync. "Once we made the adjust- ment, we played great defense." linebacker Pete Hogan, who made more than his share of stops on four fleet-footed Rebel·running backs. •Their backs were real quick and aggressive, so this was a good accomplishment for us." The Harbor defense produced all four of the game's tumovers, including two that set the Sailors up inside the Savanna 5-yard line. The Sailors, in fact, started four of their five touchdown drives in Rebel territory. Furthermore, the Tars took jUst one play to score on the drive that began on their own side of the 50. That big play, a 74-yard pass from Steve Gorman to Garrett Govaars, effectively put the game out of reach with 8:23 left in the third quarter. "They were packing every- body in on us, and I drew up the post to Govaars at halftime," Brinkley said. ·we can't let peo- ple sit in on us like that, so Steve threw a nice ball and made them pay." After the aforementioned Savanna procession to paydirt, the Rebels carried 12 times the rest of the half for a mere 4 yards. The visitors (3-2) didn't find much more room in the third quarter, collecting just 27 yards on seven running plays. Senior Brett Bak.er, once again, was proWic for the winners, amassing 227 all-purpose yards, scoring three rushing touch- downs, and snatching his fifth interception.
