Perhaps for the same reason, The Four Sea- sons, which is hosting a.six- course dinner with cham- pagne toast, at $250 a bead, has found that it still has plen- ty of tables available. "People stiU aren't really sure what thejr plans are going to be,• said Michelle Dlal, manager of The Four Seasons' Pavilion dining area, where the pricey dinner will be held. But part of what causes people to hesitate may simply be the thought of plunking down so much money for a single evening's diversion. The restaurant's event in its Garden Cafe and Lounge, which is priced more moder- ately ($100) and features a band and dancing, has sold out. A political action committee within that nonprofit group - which just received $750,000 from . the city of Newport Beach -is heading up the anti-initiative cam- paign. One of its first and most important tasks was to get the bal- lot argument against the initiative to the county Registrar's Office by 5 p.m. Dec. 10. future of John Wayne AfrpOrt. Tied into that future, most beli~ve, is the fate ol the closed El Toro Marine base bJ.Toro's future, at least until March, appears to be wrapped up in the South County-sponsored Safe and HeaJthy Communities Initiative -now known as Measure F. If passed, it would require a two- tlurds majority of county voters to approve any new or expanded air- ports, jails or toxic waste dumps. Without those statements on the ballot, voters would <>nly see argu- ments in favor of the measure, which to say the least, wouldn't bode well for its def eat. As such, the stakes are higher now thdn they ever have been. Millions of dollars have been -and will contin- ue to be -invested by the county, Mt1f>°' and various political groups on both sides. Bruce Nestande, the executive director of the group, was reported- ly in New York last week. So politi- . cal consultant Dave ElUs, who works for the Airport Working Group -another group heavily funded by Newport Beach -vol- unteered to handle it. The pro-airport contingency is already at a disadvantage. Promoting a new airport in a suburban commu- nity -no matter how solia the argu- ment -is an uphill battle. Each strategic step must be carefully planned and implemented. He probably regretted that deci- sion when he found himself locked out of the County Registrar's Office at 5 p.m. (or was it 4:59?) on deadline day. That's why we -and probably many Newport-Mesa residents and leaders -stand baffled by what Ellis maintains he was there before S p .m., despite the registrar's con- South Counfywill figfl.t JWA • expansion I t was with surpnse and respect for your publica- tion that I read John Berry's Community Porum letter ("Pro-airport colwnn skewed facts,-Dec. 11). So that's why we've rested easy every Christmas. Each year without fail, Great Grandpa Harry Noo- nan and his Christmas tree lot help bngbten our hol-• iday spirit. But now we're sony to hear that because of new development, the lot Harry & Co. have been using to hawk their seasonal pines and fils for the last 50 years will no longer be available after this year. However, we're not too worried. The Christmas spirit will likely prevail and the Noonans will find another place to continue the Costa Mesa Christmas tradition. WHATS THE DEAL? We don't always agree with Wendy Leece's ideas. But we don't always agree with Jim Ferryman's or Martha Fluor's or Judy Franco's or Serene Stokes' or Dana Black's or David Brooks' ideas either. Especially when their ideas are to squelch minori- ty opinions -like Leece's. How is it ~t Leece can run unopposed for her school board seat and win, but her colleagues not · only think she should not hold the office of board president or vice president, but not even clerk? To be fair, Brooks was the sole board member to cast a vote for Leece to be clerk. And that's too bad. Although we often don't see eye-to-eye with Leece. we certainly believe that if her constituents have seen fit to elect her to the board, her col- leagues ought to be b1g enough to acknowledge that she deserves to bold a place of leadership. tention that he wasn't. Regardless, we're sure Newport Beach residents don't Wdilt the fate of El Toro airport to hinge on whether Ellis arrived at 4:58 or 5:01. Especially when Newport's quality of life in the 21st century is o.n the line. Only a generous ruJ.¥ig by a judge allowed the argument to go on the ballot and saved Ellis, the Citizens : for Jobs and the Economy and New- port Beach from a major debacle. To be fair, Ellis said he was at the registrar's office at 1 p.m. that day when he realized one of the five sig- natures needed on the statement was invalid. To that, we could ask: how hard is it to get five valid signatures? Or this: why cut things even that close? Why not turn the argument in the day before? Though the initiative effort is fund- ed privately, Citizens for Jobs and the Economy does represent New- port Beach's position. To have someone in the final hours try to track down a signatute and beat the clock is -in light of all that's invested in the issue -simply unacceptable. The pro-airport side has another deadline Monday for a rebuttal to South County's argument. We'd suggest an early start. HOW WE SEE IT Acceptance of others is Christian way . It's not a pr ject that can transpire in a day. Pull out pictures that y like from magazines or brochures. Make a We. Drci a sketch. Look at friends' mantles and hardware. Llke most projects, time in the planning stage is time well spent or, as the old saying goes, •a little spark kindle$ great fire." • KAREN WIGHT is a Newport Beach resident who owned Wlgh House Design for 10 years.
