activists were born to fight
against airport expcmsion, the
Irvine Co., noise, immigration
and day-laborer issues, and
traffic -fights that continue
today, two decades later.
What really set the 19BOs
apart from other decades,
though, was how more and
more the power of the media
allowed major worldwide und
national events to resonate
right here at home -a phe-
nomenon that we take for
granted today.
For example, Newport-Mesa
re.sidents, like most Americdns

hostages taken by extremist
leaders of the Iranian govern-
ment m Tehran; the residents
helped elect Ronald Reagan to
the presidency and quickly
unointed him the darling of
conservatives

through the populace, and as
long-standing financial institu-
tions began to crumble
through the schemes of such
men as Charles Keating,
whose Lincoln Savings and

Mesa Community Center
Sunday proVlded more than
250 foster and adopted chil-
dren with a reason to laugh
and smile.

on hand at the three-hour
event to hug the children and
greet dS many faces as possi-

children of her own -hve

support group for foster chil-
dren and their families back

dined on ln-N-Out burgers,
El Pollo Loco, pina, 1wce,
cake, powdered doughnuts
and homemade chocolate
chip cookies for more than
three hours.
Officers from the Costa
Mesa Police Department
were also on hand lo give out
oversized, overstuffed teddy
bears to more than 250 chil-
dren.
The teddy bear serves as
tlte organization's unde-
clared mascot. Before Mag-
nusen started Project Cuddle
she orchestrated the dona-
tion of hundreds of stuffed
animals to police precincts
across Southern California
for children to hold on to after
they had been tdken out of
an abused h0me.

Jonathan Nelson, "Because
before, with my mom, she
was on drugs and I was in [a
hotne)."
Sixteen-year-old Jeremey
Henderson said he tries his
best to keep a positive out-
look on life. Dressed in a
black T-shirt, sporting spiked
blond hair and showing some
signs of acne, Henderson
plans to study psychology
one day m college.
"It 's OK, I have been in the
system since J was 5," he
said . "But I would rather be
at home with my mom."
Henderson still counts on
the day he will be reunited
with his mom, who used to
have a drug habit. He said as
soon as she buys a house he
will be living with her again.
"If 1 have kids one day I
will try to be a good parent,•
he sa.id. "Have a house and
provide for them. I won't put
them through the same thing
that I have gone through."
More than $20,000
in toys collected
Students at Orange Coast
College have collected more
than 3,000 gifts for needy
and abused children this hol-
iday season.
Gifts were donated to the
Associated Student College
Life Office's 15tb annual l · Angel nee Project. ln just
: three weeks, more then
$20,000 worth of presents
ranging in price from $1 to
$200 were collected.
The toys will be distrib-
uted to sevens! Orange
County human service agen-
cies this season.
Lincoln Elementary
trying literacy library
Lincoln Elementary School
is trying out a new approach
to promoting literacy. They
have installed a "literacy
library" that stocks series of
books and labels them
according to reading level.
Each level is then divided into
smaller groups so that readers
may gradually increase ·the·
difficulty of the material they
read. The library is stocked
with four to six copies of more
than 800 titles.
OCC speech team
wins championships
Orange Coast College's
speech and debate team won
the Fall Championship tour-
nament at Cal State Long
Beach A total of 37 colleges
and universities competed,
including last year's towna-
ment winners -the South
Orange County Community_
College District, The victory

Jackson was so excited by
the program that she arranged

room to adopt a family, too.
Now, after a month of col-
lecting food for a Christmas
dinner, toys an4 rarely worn
clothes, the students have
gathered more than enough to
provide a merry Christmas.
·1 brought hand-me-down
clothes, a Barbie for the gul
and a whole bunch of race cars
for the boys,• said 9-year-old
Katie Kay.
In one of the adopted fami-
lies there is a single mother
who cares for two children and
three grandchildren. Typically,
groups that adopt a family are
supposed to provide two gifts
for each child.
Scott's class collected
enough for each child to have
sue presents.
"I like giving other kids a
chance to have more things,•
Katie said
Nme-year-old Sloan Robin-
son brought two toys for each
child herself and food for the
mom, she said.
·It makes me feel good to
help people who don't have
what I have,• she said.
Once everything was
wrapped and ready to go it was
loaded into Jackson's car for
delivery.
But it's not over yet. On ·
Wednesday, Jackson will take
the money, also donated by
students, and buy turkeys and
all the trimmings to complete
the holiday cheer.
