fled the scene of a traffic accident in
Founta.in Valley in which two people

Pomona Avenue and 19th
Street is proof.
In 1995, shortly after a
Cude K convenience store
departed the location, resi-
dents urged the City Council
not to allow the site's AlcohoJ
Beverage Control (ABC)
license to be transferred to
the new owner.
ln the weeks following
Circle K's departure, resi-
dents said, a calm had set-
tled over their neighbor-
hood. And they liked it.
Residents complained
that the Circle K had been a
source of problems, such as
public drunkenness, loiter-
ing, littering, petty thefts and
assaults.
"We had so many prob-
lems there when it was a Cir-
cle K market," resident
Hildegarde Gonzales told
the City Council four years
ago. ·since it closed. there
has been such an improve-
ment.• ·
A number of residents
urged city officials to do
whatever they could to pre-
vent future alcohol sales at
the site.
In response, the council
agreed to send a Jetter to the
state's ABC ctistrict adminis-
trator to express the resi-
dents' concerns. The council
also considered rezoning the
site to a neighborhood com-
mercial designation, a move
that would bar alcohol sales.
Four years later, the site
still houses a convenience
store, but with more restnc-
tions placed on it when the
state granted the transfer:

related to alcohol were
barred; the parking lot had
to be monitored for loitering
on an hourly basis; and
improved outdoor lighting

maintained.
The 'testrictions levied on
the business are not applica-
ble to all convenience stores,

few y.ears to keep the place
looking respectable. Wear-
ing a plaid, long-sleeved
shirt tucked into green cor-
duroy pants, Abushan metic-
ulously straightens the items
lining his store's shelves.
"We spent money and
cleaned up the parking lot,"
said Abusban. "We keep an
eye on the parking lot, not to
keep people around."
Abushan has also
installed a chain-link fence
on the property, which pro-
hibits people from wander-
ing into the back alley.
•It's more of a family
place," Abushan said. "Peo-
ple aren't bugging you for
money or drinking in the
front."
Fernando Alcantar, 18,
lives next door to the conve-
ruence store with his parents
and brother. He said a lot of
the problems surrouncting
the store have vanished.
"Sometimes people hang
out there on the weekends,
but the owner doesn't let
them,• said Alcantar. •They
call the police.•

Beach husband-and·wif e activists
who have · worked to protect the
bay from sewage, pestiodes. and
Other pollutants. •
The Skinners first becamt! con-
cerned with the fate of the bay in
the m1d-1980s, when bacteria
counts were continually rising
and only one pump station exist-
ed to deal with. the waste from
10,000 boats. Then, too, there was
the rutrate s1tuation: 16,000 ·
.pounds of nitrate::. were being ·
dumped mto the bay on a daily
bdSIS.
Now, at 5 yedJ"S old, the
Corona del Mar resident may
be the youngest Junior black
belt in the country.
"My favonte thing is walk-
ing on the wall," Chase said
"You run sideways, then walk
real fast toward the wall You
get the hang of it.•
Chase Roossin recently became a junior black belt in Tae Kwon Do.
The Skinners worked with
business and avic leaders to find
solutions for these problems.
Today, Jack contmues to serve as
the envlTonmental representative
on the San Diego Creek Water-
shed Management Committee,
while Nancy has been closely
involved with the work on the
proposed Greenlight initiative to
slow development m Newport
Beach.

CORONA DEL MAR -After three
quarters, Corona del Mar High's girls
basketball team seemed to be heading
to an easy win with a 14-point lead.
Then, visiting Aliso Niguel wiped
away all but one point before falling,
48-47, m nonleague play on Tuesday

Davis said. •we let them back in the
ballgame. This is one·of those games
where we should have put them
away."
The Sea Kings (7-3) left Aliso
Niguel's offense in shambles with a
pressing defense that held the Lady
Wolverines (5-5) to 15 points in the sec-
ond and third quarters, as well as 16
forced turnovers. Aliso Niguel con-
tributed to its woes by letting passes
slip through its fingers, and missing
layups.
On the other side, Kristen McCoy
was dominant, scoring 22 points, grab-
bing eight rebounds, and getting six
steals. She scorPd CdM's first six points
m the second quarter, and scored sev-
en points in d row in the Uurd, capped
off b.y a three-point play.
"She's always ready to play,· Davis
said of McCoy.

middle of the run, and McCoy grabbed
an offensive rebound and scored to
keep CdM up, 47-37.

That layup by McCoy, which came
with 4:46 left, was the last field goal by
CdM in the game. After Hastie hit one
of two free throws, Aliso Niguel fresh-
man Julia Pederson, who led all scorers
with 25 points, scored eight points in a
row.
She grabbed the ball and raced
down the court for a layup. On her
team's next possession, she converted
on a three-point play. Then she hit a
three-pointer with a defender in her
face to cut CdM's lead to 47-46 with 60
seconds left.
