New Year's Eve celebration.

met by two rambunctious tour •
guides. The young men, decked out
in mouse ears and short-sleeved turtle-•
necks bearing the names Hub and Bub,
would lead trips around (be grounds of
Disneyland, performing a little spiel
appropnate to each part of the park.
"That's how our act began,· recalled
Bill Skiles (formerly Bub). •we took all
the four lands of Disneyland and made
sounds about them •
Four decades later, Skiles and Hub -
Pete Henderson, that is -are still per-
forming the slightly loopy routine that
evolved out of their early interaction.

of whom grew up
in Newport Beach
and worked in
the area for years,
will perform at
Yankee Tavern on
New Yeat's Eve
along with the
Mark Davidson
Trio. The show
promises to be, as
Skiles put it,
uapple-pie dean,•
and it will also
showcase talent
that has done a
remarkable job
staying fresh over
the years.
Skiles and
Henderson made their greatest media
splash in the '60s, when they graduated
from mouseketeer status to a gig with
•Tue Dean Martin Show.•
In addition to appearing regularly
with Martin, the duo performed with the
ChnstY, Minstrels, put in many seasons
at the cocktail lounge of the Reuben E.
Lee and spent five years touring with
The Carpenters.
In their act, the prur: has long incorpo-
rated offbeat music, vocal sound effects
and an tmprovisational approach to
comic scenario9.
"We've never written anything down
m 42 years,• Skiles said.
Perhaps for this reason, their material
has never gotten stale. Skiles argued that
the ability to generate fresh comedy with

each new perfonnance was a strength of
the group -and something that few
contemporary comics actually possess.
•1 think Jonathan Winters and Robin
Williams are true geniuses as comedy
people,• because of their improvisatiohal
ability. Skiles sdid. "The rest of them are
actors who are saying funny things.•
Improvisation will be the key note of
the Mark Davidson '!ho's perfonnance
as well. The group features dnunmer
Sherman Ferguson, bassist Trey Henry
and David on on piano. It's a threesome
whose technical skills are fomudable,
Davidson said, and that makes for some
creative playing come perf onnance time.
•These guys are really outstanding
indivtdual players, but what makes it
fun for me is that they're also excellent
a ccompanists, 11 Davidson said. •1t you
go somewhere, they will bravely follow.•
Davidson is likely to take a few odd
turns here and there just because his
approach to music is very genre-bend-
ing He freely confesses that he enjoys
musicians like Elvii. PrPslPy 1mil WilliP
Nelson as much as John Coltrane or
Charles Mingus.
~. Davidson says, his personal style
as a player has never drawn too heavily
on the work of other artists, remaining
fairly undiluted in its idiosyncrasy no mat-
ter who he happens to be listening to.
•I never particularly tried to emulate
anybody,• he said "In some-cases, I've
never even tried to figure out what the
other guys are domg."
For about 15 minutes during the New
Year's show, Davidson plans to run
through a sort of whirlwind tour of 20th·
century music, hitting all the high notes
-ragtime, rock 'n' roll -and even
dabbling a bit in the lows.
According to Davidson, though, there
are no lows. What there are, however,
a.re a few dubious genre distinctions.
·1 don't understand the categones. •
Davidson said. "I have a tough time say-
ing what's 'hip hop' and what's 'disco.'•
The least useful of all the labels, of
course, is the one that tries to capture
music all the way from nn Pan Alley to
the free screechings of Omette Coleman:

She wanted to believe

the more she thought about it,

which was less than an hour
away. Jf he c.Ud come back,
he'd have to be real, wouldn't
he? That's exactly what she
was thinking when the UPS
truck almost hit her.
It was her fawt, actually.
She realized, too late, that she
was in the nght turn lane. She
tned to switch lanes, but the
UPS truck forced her onto
Bristol.
"OK, stay calm,• she told
herself. Just make her way to
Slmflower, then Bear to South
Coast Drive, and everything
will be tine. In fact, that's
exactly what she was thinking
when she heard the siren.
She could see the flashing
li(Jhts coming up behind her
a$ one car then the next
squeezed to one side or the
other.
By the time it reached her,
she had only one wdy to go -
ttte left tum lane into South
Coast Plaza.
Just as the ambulance
passed, the arrow turned
green and Dons was swept
into the parking lot like a cork
on the crest of a wave.
"I was right all along,• she
thought. "What the holidays
a.re really all about 1S trouble
and bother and more bother. I
Wish they dJdn't even eXJSt,"
sl).e muttered.
Just then, every Christmas
light and store sign m sight
went dark, flickered for an
instant, then snapped back on.
"That's odd,• she thought,
w;h.ich is why she didn't notice
the man shouting at her right
away. "Hey lady ... back tire
on your side,• the security
g\lard said. "It's almost flat.•
"Maybe this is what a
clteam is like,· she said to no
one m particular.

Startled, Doris stopped and
turned qwckly.
"What does it remind you
oW the Santa asked. The
voice was unmistakable.
"It's you, isn't it?" Doris
asked.
"Look at your watch," he
said.
She did, and smiled lil spite
of herself. It was seven days to
the moment of his last visit.
HYou remember that sound,
don't you?" he asked.
She didn't answer, but she
remembered perfectly.
She was all of 9 years old,
10 at the most, Christmas .

she would carefully pick out,
and pay for the perfect pre-
sents 'tor her family.
She slopped for a moment
and watched the Santa
beside the door, clanging
away with his bell, wishing
everyone a merry Christmas.
She carefully pulled two
dimes from her pocket and
was about to drop them mto
the red pot when a group of
obnoxious boys burst out the
door and started giving Santa
a hdrd Lime -jumping and
shouting and bemg rude dnd
generally acUng like curport
opponents. .
They swiped Santa's hat
and lipped over hl.S red pot as
they ran off, sending coms
clattenng to the sidewalk.
Horrified, Doris ran over
and started p1ckmg up the
coms, then reached for the
red pot to return them.
"Hey ... ,• someone shout-
ed. "That little gul is stE>aling
Santa's money!•
She looked up dt the circle
of angry faces closing in on
her.
They were all cary, but

limit, said Costa Mesa Police
Chief Dave Snowden.

restaurant's pdtrons that night
said they saw Rodman have
only one beer at the bar and that
his behavior was pleasant.
Once at Costa Mesa Jail, the
ex-Los Angeles Laker opted to
take a blood test, the results of
which will be. revealed next
week. Rodman was released
later that night on $2,500 bail.

When a sick little girl m Cos-
ta Mesa looks under the tree
on Christmas morrung, she
will find that Santa has
answered her letter.
On her way to the hospi-
tal earlier this month, a
third-grade student at Whit-
tier Elementary School who
has undergone several
major surgeries entrusted
her school nurse with a very
important letter.
That letter asked Santa
for her very own computer.
It was signed with a series of
seven hearts
After reading the letter,
the nurse hand-delivered it
to what she hoped rrught be
Santa's Workshop.

Plan, calling for high-density
residential, commeroal and a
large central park; the Wild-
lands Ranch plan that would
have V-shaped runways and
send planes over a greenbelt
area in coastal South County;
expanding John Wayne to
serve up to 14 million annual
passengers: and expanding
John Wayne to serve 25 million
annual passengers.
With the report comes some
key information that activists
on both sides have been wait·
ing for slnce an intemational
airport plan was adopted by
~e Orange County Board of
Supervisors l.n December 1996.
Highlights include:
• Cost: The airport at El Toro
will cost $2.8 billion to build.
That compares with expanding
John Wayne Airport to 25 mil·
lion annual passengers, which
would cost $4.3 billion, accord·
mg to the report
• Revenue: El Toro is pro·
jected to generate an extra $2.9
billion in direct revenue, $1.2
billion in persorral mcome and
32,000 jobs, the report said.

That compares With 391,322
daily trips that would be gener·
ated by the non-aviation Mil·
lennium Plan and John Wayne
at 8.4 million annual passen·

aircraft -including the 747 -
louder than 86 decibels.
Other noise mitigation pro·
grams include a monitoring
program, a coJllplaint and citi·
zen liaison program and land·
use controls.
Reactions to the content of
the report -which is 17 vol·
umes and weighs ·at least 60
pounds -were hard to come
by Thursday.
But that didn't stop some of
the more vocal players to throw
in their two cents.
~They gave us a holiday
turkey and it had more stuffing
than meat," said Roger Faubel,
a spokesman for the El Toro
Reuse Planning Authority, who
had yet to see the document.
Richard Taylor, a member of
the Alrport Working Group,
said be hopes the report will
finally convince the pµblic that
the reuse of El Toro is a good
idea.

However, the report also
outlines a number of problems
the proposed airport will cause
that cannot be reduced below
significant levels:
• Increased noise levels from
increased llights and nighttime
llights within the El Toro area.
• Increased noise levels on:
the proposed recreational facil·
ities at the airport: existing local
parks and open space areas in
the northern part of the city of
Lake Forest: yet-to-be-built
trails such as the Borrego
Daily Pilot
Canyon Bikeway, the Jeffrey
Road Btkeway and the Hicks
Canyon 'nail; portions of bike·
ways on Alton Parkway, Portola
Parkway, Bake Parkway and
Lake Forest Drive.
• Increased demand for
housing due to the employee
population. This will reduce the
supply of available housing in
Orang(.> County.
South County airport foes
have been waiting since
December 1996, when the
Board of Supervisors first
approved planning tor an mter·.
national airport at El Toro, to
find out what the impacts
would be on their communities.
Bits and pieces have trickled
out since the four primary
options in Apnl 1998 were
unveiled by the county, but
many questions have remained
unanswered.
The El Toro planning
process has been as long and
complicated as the new envi-
ronmental report itself. At first,
the board adopted a smaller
airport that would link El Toro
and John Wayne with a lugh·
speed people mover. That plan
was scrapped once planners
found out how much the rail
line would cost. The board also
el.i.minated the largest proposal
-Plan D, calling for 38 million
annual passengers -from its
range of choices.
The planning process has
been scrutinized by everyone
in the debate, and one of the
nagging complaints was the
time it took the information to
get out. The envuorunental
report was originally supposed
to be completed in June and
the plan voted on in December.
Now officials say a vote on
the airport likely won't come
until March or April. Orange
County voters in March will
decide the fate or the Safe and
Healthy Communities lnitia·
tive, which, if it passes, would
require two-thirds of voters to
approve the new airport before
the project could go forward.

quarter, along with five rebounds. He
ended up wllh 15 points for the game.
Then the roof, the walls, and the entire
foundation caved in on El Modena in the
third quarter. The Sailors outscored the
Vanguards, 31-4, including a 22-0 run at
the end of the quarter. Yamat, who only
played 16 minutes in the game, scored 12
points in the third, and led all scorers with
16. The Sailors turned every missed shot
and turnovers into fast break points dur-
ing the run.
After the third quarter, the starters
gave way again to the bench. But this
time, they earned the right to sit down
and rest ...
