convoluted story about New-
port politics, my notes scattered
around me like leaves from a
storm-raked tree, and there's a
man with a pipe standing over
my shoulder.

I nod, take a gulp of room-
temperature coffee and try to
concentrate. One small word
after another. Uke a mantra, I
repeat it. One small word after
another. It ain't working. I'm
stuck.
The man with the pipe snorts,
finally leans over my typewriter
and yanks out t\).e paper.
He wanders over to the next
desk, the next reporter. ·vou

It was Mwphine who brought
me to the Daily Pilot. He hired
me over the phone. He'd heard
good things about me, believed
them evidently and wu willing

Arlington scbQol board mem-
bers will be visiting the Newport-
Mesa Unified School District on
Wednesday. Du1'ing their one-day
visit, they will meet with the
Newport-Mesa school board to
discuss Belnd's new position.
The Arlington school board
will nf6da11y vote for the final
candidate at its Nov. 17 meeting.
But Arlington school district
spokeswoman Charlene Robert-
son said it is highly unlikely that
the board would change its mind
about Bernd.

NEWPORT BEACH -The
Airport Working Group says the
city's approach to pushing for an
airport at El Toro just doesn't fly.
The Newport Beach-based cit-
izens group, in a letter to Mayor
Jan Debay last week, atticized
the city far making little progress
and withholding information
about its efforts. The admonish-
ment focuses mostly on the way
officials have Wmdled a team of
consultants the city hired in May
for $15,000 per month.
And the letter comes just as
officials revealed "the consultants'
duties -nuiely, developing a
grass-roots pro-airport campaign
-after a struggle to keep them
secret. The locally based consult-
ing company, Government Solu-
tions, has been meeting with oth-
er cities' leaders, coordinating a
speakers' bureau and producing
promotional materials during its
time with the city. -: :
The Airport Working GnntP
asked the city to respond to its
concerns by last Monday, but alft-
dals are still drafting its answers,
City Manager Kevin Mmphy
said. But the Oty Council on
Monday may advance one of tbe
group's recommendations: hiring
a full-time staff member to ban·
dle airport-related issues.

We must fight the South County naYsayers

I think of myself as a sympathet·
ic person, someone who will-
ingly listens to others' prob-
l~ms. But I am slowly hardening
my heart to those in South Coun-
ty who continually cry they do
not want El Toro Marine base to
become a commercial airport.
· Don't get me wrong: There
was a time I winced when they
dalmed their quality of life
Vf(>uld be ruined if planes flew
<Werhead day and night. So why
cfd I change my attitude 7 There
vtere two reasons.
1 -:rhe facts didn't support
their concerns.
2 -Their solution to our
county's air traffic future shocked
me as it should shock you, too.
El Toro naysayers want to close
down the Marines' airfield and
expand John Wayne Airport.
They want to extend John
Wayne's single, stubby runway
over the San Diego Freeway to
allow bigger jets to fly in and
reroute the freeway traffic
underground. And what about
more fligh1s? They want John
Wayne's existing 11 p.m. to 7:30
a.m. curfew lifted to allow com·

mercial jets to thunder over our
heads and homes day in and day
out.
Some of you might wonder
haw we can ask South County to
endure what.we are not willing
to take on. I say we're not Please
consider that El Toro and its built·
in buffer zone are a whopping
18,350 acres (21 square miles). On
the other hand, John Wayne is
only 470 acres (one square mile)
with absolutely no buffer zone.
You could put 10 airports the size
of John Wayne onto El Toro and
have room left. South County res-
idents sfmply will not be impact·
ed like those of us in Newport
Beach and Costa Mesa.
The reason is clear. Aviation
experts tell us that El Toro run·
ways are farther away from
South County homes than any
airport in the United States
except one, Denver International,
which is farther away from Den-
ver than LAX Is from Orange
County. By comparison, our own
family neighborhoods st.art less
than a hatf-mlle from the end of
John Wayne's runway, and this is
why John Wayne air traffic
sounds like erupting volcanoes.
Should El Toro naysayers pr~
vall, we'll all be hurt. Yes, South
County will be free of aircraft -
but we'll all be dogged by con-
gestion of another kind. Yes,
they'll have comfy, cozy neigh·
borhoods and quiet skies, but our
transportation corridors. high-
ways and surface streets will be
jammed with traffic congestion
from all those •non-aviation•
uses they're dreaming up.
And here in N~rt Beach
and Costa Mesa, we II be bur·
dened with double trouble from
the air traffic they're already
generatit')9. South County bla·
tantJy refUses to shoulder any
part of our county's air·traffic
needs. despite the fact that
unprecedented growth in ~r
region Is what's creating most of
the demand In the fim place.
If Pilot re~rs don't want
nolset pollution and traffic: to
doub1e here, We better start rais-
ing our own voices. ·

After picking up good live bait at

up his sensation performance by

Even though Brix pulled out
of the PCL Finals two miles into
the race because of a stress
fracture in his foot, Munoz went
on to tie the school record of
15:23, a mark encompassing all j
courses.
Appell went 15.23 three years
ago in a dual meet against

"I've always run,• Munoz
said. "I like to run. It's my
favortte sport.·
Munoz, who added he was
surprisedily his record-tying-
effort at the PC L Fm.als, is one
