COSTA MESA -A Costa Mesa High
School student angry he did not make the
vanity football team was arrested Tuesday
after be cursed at and threatened the team
coach, police said.
The 16-year-old student, who played
until recently on the Mustangs' juilior varsi-
ty lq\l&d, threatened coach Jerry Howell
after failing to make the varsity cut in mid·
Nov8Dlber, said Costa Mesa police Lt Ron
Smith.
. The threats, which included phrases like
•rm going to get rid of you• and •rm going
to take care of you,• drove sthool officials to
suspend the student on Nov. 17 for two d,ays,
Smith said.
. On Monday, Howell told the student to
leave a meeting where football players had
assembled to elect the season's most valu-
able player, driving the student to curse
angrily at the coach, police said.
Howell later laid be wasn't tbreatened by
the student but felt like the boy "crossed the
line verbally,• and he called police to avoid
having the student •cross the line physical-
ly.•
•tt was just a procedural thing," Howell
said.
. Police arrived at the campus and arrested
the student outside class at 10:25 a.m., offi-
cials said. .
Several Costa'Mesa High varsity football
players contacted after school Tuesday said
either they hadn't beard about the alleged
threats again.It their coach or refused to
comment.
The student was in CU9tody for an hour
and 40 minutes before being released to bis

During cross-examination Tuesday, Kellei-
asked crash victim Heidi Funderburk which
camp she owed allegiance to.
·1 feel that (Rausch) should accept respon·
sibility a5 well as all of us," Funderburk said ·we all took a part in the accident.•
Under questioning from Deputy Attorney
General Jim Dutton. Funderburk. 17, said she
feared Rausch was going too fast as the B1azet
raced down Irvine Avenue as the occupants
returned from a night of drinking and party-
ing.

the helm of the Texas school dis-
trict on Jan. 1.
"Basically, the superintendent
has scheduled some meetings as I a chance for me to get to know

tem." Bernd said.
