Strange bedfellows
The Piecemakers, the local reli-
gious group locked in a bitter legal
fight with the dty of Costa Mesa,
found an unlikely friend in court last
week: Municipal Court Judge
Susanne Shaw.
1be group was in Shaw's court-
room to face criminal charges it's
members knowingly broke city laws
by ho)ding events in the parking lot of
the Piecemakers Country Store with-
out required clty permits.
While attorneys representing the
dty claim the group is lawless and
must be taught a lesson. the contro-
vendal judge was of a different opin-
ion.
Shaw said she felt "compassionate•
for the Pieoamak .. and that she, in
' -fact. understandi many °'. meutbei.r strong ~ -. mdl-govemment and Christian beliefs.
Shaw even pondered what would
happen to her if every American felt
the way the Piece:mllkers do.
"I might be out ot a job," the judge
said.
Eat at Mac's
One of Superintendent Mac
Bernd's top priorities dwing his visits
to Arlington, Texas was to find a local
cafe with the friendliest seJVice and
best chicken fried steak and eggs.
Upon his return. Bernd said he
found just the spot. The gravy was
thick and the breakfast well-prepared.
Maybe it's just coincidence, but the
name of the restaurant is "Mac's Bar
and Grill."

Congratulations, Newport-
Mesa -you've made it through
your first El Ni.iio-driven storm
of the year.
And it wasn't that bad, was
it? Sure, more than 6 inches of
rain pounded the area this
weekend, but look on the
bright side: There were no traf-
fic fatalities. There were a few
rainbows. And it's not every
weekend you can walk across
the Rhine Channel, which was
packed solid with debris.
Some residents, of course,
did suffer substantial sacrifices
to the storm we've all been
bracing for.
Along Pomona Avenue in
Costa Mesa, clumps of soggy
carpet and floor padding dotted
front lawns. Mary Lou Coulter,
who has lived on the street for
11 years, went to work on Sat-
urday morning thinldng this El
Nino thing wasn't so bad. Then
her husband called her at about

garbage bags and throwing
them in the bathtub, but her
still-sopping wet furniture was
scattered about her home.

niture's warped, the bed's
ruined, the vacuum cleaners
are gone, the stereo's gone."
Stewart, a West Newport
resident for nearly three years,
said she'll be now be qioving
out -her landlord is asking
everyone to leave while the
homes are repaired and rncar-
peted. She said when she
checks out a new pl.ace to live,
she'll ask whether it has ever
been flooded.

according to National Weather

Costa Mesa's south end suf-
fered the most flooding, police
said. Wilson Street, Harbor
Boulevard, Pomona Avenue at
17th Street, Anaheim Avenue
at 19th and Park Drive were all
under water Saturday. Some
residents on Park Drive had to
evacuate by boat, police said.
A few frantic calls to the Fire
Department reported people
falling in the Santa Ana River.
but those proved false, Battalion

opened as a Red Cross emer-
gency center for some residents
who bad to leave their homes.
The Newport Beach Police
Department called in off-duty
officers to help with relief
efforts. Floods hit almost every
part of the dty, Lt. Tun New-
man said. A few drivers got
stuck in their cars at the Arches
Bridge -where water was
reportedly 3 feet deep -and
cars stalled everywhere.
Coast Highway closed for
about four hours, and two
northbound lanes at Superior
Avenue remained closed Sun-
day. Mariner's Mile and Bal-
boa Boulevard were also
awash in rainwater Satw'day.

Newport's city yard banded
out about 20,000 sandbags and
had to tum away droves d non-
residents who were mistakenly
informed that the dty was
handing out free sandbags to
anyone in the county. Only
those with proof of Newport
Beach residence went home
with the coveted bags.

playing fields.
In Febru-
ary, the coun-
cil asked city
staff members
to come up
with a new "cost recovery pro-
gram.• a way for the city to get
back some of the maintenance,
staffing and other costs incurred
in operation of its public facilities.
So-called user fees have
become increasingly popular
with government agencies stiug-
gling to make ends meet on
shrinking budgets.
On Monday night, the council
will bold a workshop to informal-

dance, but the neighborhood's
residents want to cut in on the
plan.
Cannery owner Bill Hamilton
requested a permit change to
allow dancing and amplified
music at the 25-year-old restau·
rant. The proposal. though it gar-
nered approval from the Planning
Commission, stepped on the toes
of some nearby residents who
fear more noise and rowdy
aowds.
The issue will come before the
Qty Council Monday on appeal
from resident Don Gregory. The
council's word will stand as final

came out of the blocks slowly as
the Warriors mounted a 20-4 lead
by the end of the first period.
Even though the Sea Kings
found something of a rhythm, the
Warriors continued to build upon

Nelson drained 31 points to lead
the Eagles to a 72-54 victory over

game of the Daily Pilot Tip-off
Classic at Corona del Mar High
Saturday afternoon.
Nelson averaged 32.3 points
over the four games of the tour-
nament to pace the Eagles (2-2)
and earn a spot on the all-tourna-
ment team.
Estancia rode the fuel of Nel-
son's charge to establish a 20-8
lead at the end of the first period
and didn't look back as Coach
Rich Boyce's squad punished the
Dons from inside and from
around the perimeter.
Senior Gavin Rainey added 10
for Estancia and James Dawkins
chipped in with eight.

NEWPORT BBACH -For three quar-
ten, Aliso Niguel's boys basketball team
was falling victim to Newport Harbor's
strong team defense, precise shot selection
and scrappiness.
In the end, however, it was the Wolver-
ines' height, their shining stars and their
flashiness that captured a 77~69 victory and
third place in the Daily Pilot Tip..off Classic
at Newport Harbor Saturday evening.
"It came down to their bulk and their
size," Sailor Coach Larry Hilst said.
Leading 53-51 at the end of the third,
quarter;-Harber seemed to have a lot in its
comer.
Playing on their home court didn't hurt,
even though rain was leaking through the
roof in some spots.
More importantly, the Tars (2-2) had
~n practicing patience by passing the
ball around to get good shots. They had
been canning those shots, too. They had
been boxing out, forcing Aliso's tall guys to
get called for over-the-beck fouls.
But the Wolverfna, who had been
strong all evening in the paint thanb to
6-toot-1, 230-pound J.J. Sola, broke from
their bench with all the punch ... and sud-
denly Newport's shots wenm't falling.
After hitting 33% of their attempts in the
first half, the b1ue and gray missed nine
field goal attempts in a row to open the
fin4l period.

Hirst said. •They didn't give us a whole lot
of easy shots. They forced us to be patient •we seem to go in spurts and we're not
hitting those spurts when we need to be
executing."

Goldstone's squad would emerge.

the visitors ahead, 64-57.

until the end, which could be a good sign
for Hint as his team was in the game with

"The fact that we can play with a bigger
team is encouraging, a.pd we still have the
gumption to come back. I have a whole
squad tbat ii wiJJing to fight until the hitter
end,• he said.
Jameson led the Tars with 20 points and
the point guard topped the team in the
rebounding category with 10.
Archbold added 17 points while Alan
Umon chipped in with 10.
Sophomore Dustin Illingworth, who
made the all-tournament team, tallied nine
points in Saturday's contest.

winter camp at Corona del Mar
High with two sessions: Dec. 22-
24 and 26, and Dec. 29-31 and

The camp is for boys and girls

Jackson, a sophomore who
