Responding to rumors that their
school is in danger of closing, a
group of Orange Coast Middle
College High School parents
asked the school boa.rd to contin-
ue funding the program that
many parents said bas restored
their children's interest in school.
There are 65 students in the
program at Orange Coast Col-
lege. The progtam costs the dis-
trict about $250,000 a year and is
under the umbrella of the dis-
trict's alternative education cen-
ter. It targets students who have
high potential but are under-
achieving because they are
bored with their classes.

waterways littered with tree
limbs, Styrofoam cups and other
debris, Newport Beach officials
Tuesday estimated their dty suf-
fered $250,000 worth of damage.
The preHminary estimate
includes all dty employee over-
time costs, damage to public prop-
erty and required replin to streets
and facilities incwTed during the
storm that slammed into the area
Saturday, officials said.
Director of General Services
Dave Niederhaus said the city
ca.me up with the estimate after
two days of tallying and said most
of it -up to 15% of the total -is
attributed to damage to city prop-
erty.
One of the hardest hit areas
was Little Corona. a tiny beach
enclave at the south end of the
dty that was stppped of about 6
twt of sand by stonn waters bar-
reling out of Buck Gully.
A portion of the city-owned
concrete steps and an asphalt
walkway leading down to the
bee.ch from the intersection of
Ocean and Poppy avenues col-
lapsed after storm water swept
away the sand that supported the
area.
Niederhaus said the damage to
the steps, metal handrail and
walkway will cost about $25,000
and require access to the public
beach to be fenced off near the
restrooms above the beach for at

ceived the idea -
building the •world's most
advanced ocean-going electric
boat" -to promote electricity
as fuel. He has been designing
and manufacturlng·environmen-
tally friendly electric boats since
1970, and his showroom parking
lot on Tuesday included four
electric cars.
During the pa.st two years,
Duffield gathered engineers to
sketch plans and construct the
carbon fiber vessel. He also hus-
tled sponsors to fund the project,
winning backing from Simple
Green cleaning product manufac-
turer and 'fiojan battery company.
Now Duffield wants to show it
off around the country, at boat
shows and the like, to garner
some nationwide attention. In
early summer, he's planning the
first Catalina Challenge, in which
he'll take the boat on a nonstop
briefly in the news

Mollica, Costa Mesa High gymnastics coach, dies ~ EL:W-CH-I~-0 Caryl Mollica, a former gym-
nastics coach at Costa Mesa
High School who also volun-
teered her time to lead a local
Girl Scouts troop and give tours
of Centennial Parm, died last
Saturday after a long bout with
leukemia. She was 63.
Mrs. Mollica had been hospi-
talized off and on since March
t. fighting the disease but was
