By Christopher Goffard. Daily Pilot HARBOR COURT -A judge slapped down a felony vehicutar manslaughter charge against Jason Rausch Thursday but said there was enough evidence for the 18-year-old to stand trial on misdemeanor charg~ related to a fatal May 23 auto crash. Superior Court Judge Everett W. Dickey said Rausch did not intend to inflict harm as the des- ignated driver of a Chevrolet Blazer that Oipped after striking the center median on Irvine Avenue, spilling bodies into the road. Noting that Rausch had no pri- or criminal convictions, Dickey said he could nol finagine a rea- sonable judge sentencing the tee~ to state prison, as the felony charge would have permitted. Rausch, who could have faced a six-year prison term if convicted, now faces a maximum of one year in county jail on misdemeanor charges relat- ed to the death of Don- Jason Rausch ny Bridgman and the injuries of Amanda Arthur and Dan Townsend, who suffered brain damage. Dick~y's decision capped an unUSWlDJ ~ PrelimlnarY heer- ing that began last Monday. Tb& prosecution contended Rausch was speeding from 60 to 61 mph in a 35-mph zone as the Blazer, packed with 10 Newport Harbor High School students, returned from a party. The defense blamed dangerous curves, a water-slick road, and the vehicle itself. On Thursday, Dickey heard impassioned pleas from both sides of the case. T h e problems began last Saturday when heavy rain flooded an under- ground Pacific Bell ublity box in the 1600 block of Baker Avenue, knocking out phone ser- vice to as many as 2,000 nearby customers, said company spokesman Steve Getzug. While service to most of those customers was restored by Wednesday, a chain reaction of small- er outages continue to plague the area. Newport senior Luke Alvarado was a second- team selection, while Corona del Mar senior Greg With Pharris anchoring the defense in goal, the Sailors finished 18-5, but were eliminated in the quarterfinals of the CIP Southern Section Division I playoffs. COSTA MESA -Wblle some felt a llttle tunny about playing their brethren in a mMllingful bu· ketbell game, by halftime the vanity playen warmed up to the fa.ct that they'd better get serloul. LcGng to the JV, or allowing the underclassmen to even make it dose, would be grounds for the elder statesmen to hide their faces on campus. But Costa Mesa Hiqh's Mustangs-their varsity, that is -need not wony about any embarrassing verbal jabs following a 60-28 victory over Coach Jim Weeks' JV squad on lbursdAy in the Jason Fergu- son Tournament. According to CIP Southern Section administra- ton, it'!Hlll offici8l win for Costa MeRr(r-3/,t~tlrst of the year. _ As soon as Coach Erich Allen's varsity stormed to an early 8-0 lead on a jumper by David Weir and .three-point baskets by 'n'avis Rice and Jon Payne, Weeks blared out from his spot on the visiting bench: ··Harbor Blows. Estancia away •The wind and cold don't slow the Sailors as they top Eastancia. 5-1. By Molly Yanity, Daily Pilot COSTA MESA -Both teams had to battle the wind that was blowing against the players' bare legs as they ran down the fj.eld, but it was New- port Harbor High that whisked away with a 5-1 victory over hosting Estancia in nonleague girls soccer action Thursday. "The wind kind of blew away our focus,• Estancia Coach Jenny Tavares said. In addition, the Sailors (2-1) came out firing from the opening whistle as senior Taylor Yurada knocked ill a goal past Estancia's Helen Flores to give the Tars a 1-0 lead. The Eagles (1-2) responded, though. Senior Jennifer Porter, who has spent the past three seasons u a dt!fehder for the red ea gold but was moved to forward this season. drilled in a goal off of a comer kick to knot the score. With players jumping up and down on the sidelines to stay warm. the ball went back and forth until Harbor's Kyle McNicbols broke away from the pack and, running into the wicked wind, nailed a lob shot th.at landed in the left comer of the net to give the Tars the lead. But the defense of both teams was both strong in the opening stanza, as the hosts were led by sophomore Rebeka Roth's effort. while Harbor rode the performance of All-Sea View League sweeper Brooke flam. son. Harbor went into the halftime break with a one-goal advantage, but Estancia never appeared to come back from the intermission allowing the visitors to explode on otfeme and control the ball the rest of the way. •1n previous games, we've bad the majority of play, but just couldn't get the ball in the goal," Newport Coach Jason Sorrell said. "Tonight we had five playen score five goals. I think we played well." 18vares inserted sophomore goal- keeper Tula Lopez to Teplace Flores, also a sophomore, In the second half, as has been the practice in the Eagles' revolving door at the net so far this season. Lopez and the crossbar were all the resistance Estancia put up on defense. Goals by juniors Alison Park.er, Cari Monell and Devon Burlingham sealed the Harbor rout. but Lopez was busy the entire half making nine saves. "She bad a lot of good saves," Tavares laid. •Newport's a good team ... they were able to make a few adjustments (in the second half.) We were just taken out ol our game.• As time wound down and the cold really set in, Estancia 's frustration was released as Heather Porter got into a struggle for the ball with ~ bor's McNichols. Porter appeared to kick McNichols and, as the ball rolled away, the two wrestled to the ground, jumping up with tempers hot. Both received red caJds and must sit out their team's nut game.
