COSTA MESA -Christmas
came early for the City Council
on Monday when officials
learned they had more than $2
million left over from last year's
general fund budget -extra
cash they put toward street
repairs, new police equipment
and other previously unfunded
projects on the city's wish list.
News of the financial windfall
came from the city's Finance
Deputment, which attributed the
excess bucks to a combination of
sales tax received from Metro
Pointe, which was not included in
the year's revenue projections,
money transferred to the general
fund ·from a self-insurance fund
and salary savings from a City
Hall hiring freeze.
Faced with a long list of cur-
rently unfunded community and
city projects, the council eventu-
ally chose to spend $1.5 million of
the roughly $2 million excess and
leave the remainder -$(93,590
-in the bank., ofticials said.

Police arrest three
in prostitution sting

COSTA MESA -Three
women were arrested Monday
night in a prostitution sting at a
massage parlor on Newport
Boulevard, the same location that
served as an acupressure center
where similar arrests were made
earlier this year, police said.
An undercover officer arrested
Donna Kay Delrosarto, 46, of Cos-
ta Mesa, a masseuse, after she
allegedly solicited him for sex
around 9:30 p.m. at the Body Care
Center in the 2500 block, said
Costa Mesa police U . Ron Smith.
Police also arrested Sbenyi.or-
raine Brown, 51, of Costa Mesa.

finding her administering a mas-
sage while partially unclothed.

dangerous angle. I said that my
next door neighbor, Bil Goring,
and I had decided to tackle th1i
problem jointly in a highly ld-
entific manner by doing
research and drawing up plans
rather than simply plunging
compulsively into repairs.
What I heard around the
neighborhood in the aftermath
of that column were comments
that what I was really saying
was that we would never actu-
ally get around to fixing the
mailboxes. This was said not
with rancor but with a.kind of
bemused resignation. And it
was only partly true. It might
have taken awhile -maybe
even quite awhile -but Bill
and I like to know precisely
where we're going before we
commit ourselves to such a
major project.
So that's where things stood
when El Nino hit us the other
night. It occurred to me the
storm might force us to action
by leveling the mailboxes, but
they were still standing-list-
ing is more accurate -when
we left the house to attend a
party the night after the heavi-
est El Niiio attack. It was still
raining steadily at the time, and
the last view I had as we drove
off was the bedraggled and for-
lorn set of mailboxes.
When we returned at mid-
night, my wife and I were both
. damp, cold and desperately
sleepy, focused only on getting
through the front door and into
bed. So I almost missed the
mailboxes in the sweep of my

headlights as I turned into the
drtveway. I was aware only of a
swatch of whiteness where
there bad once been only rust.
Startled awake, I backed
into the street and peered
through the murky windshield
and, sure enough, the mail box-
es were a gleaming white. My
wile and I sat there for almost
five minutes in a kind of stupor,
not believing what we seemed
to be seeing. Then I decided it
had to be some sort of fatigue-
induced hallucination, and we
parked and ran for the house.
What we didn't know until
the next day was that six of our
neighbors, caught in mid-
action, were hiding nearby
while we studied the mailbox-
es. They bad followed this rou-
tine every time a pair of head-
lights turned into our street for
the past several hours while
they dug up the old mailboxes,
mounted new ones on a fresh
post, and set it in concrete --all
in a persistent rainstorm.
When I awakened the fol-
lowing morning, my first
thought was the mailbox hallu-
cination of the night before. So
I opened our upstairs shutters
and looked down on the won-
drous finished product, very
real and most beautiful.
The mailboxes were being
wrapped in a green ribbon as
we watched. We rushed down-

For tbe reel spirit of Christmas
that lives IO bountifully the year
round among my neighbors.
There's DO quid pro quo
among these people. They are
quite aware that In my mechani-
cally retaided state, I'm more of
a liability than an asset when
they need a band. But the spirit
is always willing, and that's
enough for them. They give
without strings. They give
because that's who they are and
how they live their lives.
I don't know how or why my
wife and I were lucky enough to
move into this neighborhood
almost 15 years ago, just a week
before Christmas. I didn't realize
then how prophetic the timing
was. But it didn't take me long
to learn that the spirit of Christ-
mas --of unselfish giving --
operated here all the time.
See, I told you this was going
to turn emotional and sappy. But
that's what I'm feeling right
now, and I'm not ashamed to
admit il Christmas has come
early around here.
I'm going out front now to
look at my new mailboxes. Feel
free to drive by and have a look
for yourselves. But wear sun-
glasses. Those suckers really
shine. And if you're very quiet
and look at them very hard, you
can feel them saying •Merry
Christmas.•

The Costa Mesa Sanitary Dis-
trict reminds locals that district
customers are entitled to one free
call-in service each year, a per-
fect way to get rid of large items
between regularly scheduled
weekly trash pick up.
Free to district customers, the
service allows residents to call in
and reserve a day for items too
large for regular service to be
hauled away.
The service should be used for
trash that is too large to be col-
lected along with regular trash
-such as carpets damaged in
the recent flooding -but is not
inteqded for all large items, such
as construction materials, offi-
cials said.
The call-in service is in addi-
tion to the district's annual large

Tue AYSO boys Division 5 soccer championship had the making of
a youth sports classic. Two teams that held each other close to their
hearts as rivals would do battle for the right to call itself the champ, and
the other would have given it all in the process.
It, indeed was one that the kids wouldn't soon forget as Quicksliver
fended off Poison Ivy to capture the division championships by a score
oX~-o.
Quicksilver met Poison Ivy last Saturday, each team coming into the
contest with one loss each. The mark in the loss in each's record had
been delivered by its title-game opponent.
Poison Ivy began the game with a strong offensive attack, but
Quicksilver's defense clamped down denying the squad a goal.
In the second quarter, Quicksilver's Nico Hendricks scored on a
breakaway to break the scoreless tie. His score was followed by a goal
from 1\'aftord Hfll. which was &et up on a pass from Ethan Bartollc.
Poison Ivy retaliated by drawing a penalty kick that could have
turned the momentum of the game. However, Quicksilver goalkeeper
Chris Lo Memo came up with the save.
Noa.la lalr, Hill and Hendricks each scored in the second half to
clinch the title.
Finishing the championship season with a 12-1-1 record, Quicksil-
ver's team also included Phil Garrett. Leon Glaser, Mike Madi.Ion.
