Saltarelli in its efforts to prevent lrvine from annexing the El Toro . Marine Base, where Newport Beach officials envision a com- mercial airport and Irvine officials oppose one. Saltarelli, who voted in favor of the commercial airport during his stint on the board from 1995 to last January, will receive $15,000 for advising the city on how to stymie Irvine's gambit. While the Board of Supervisors voted in December to build the controversial airport on the 4,700- acre base, Irvine and other South County cities fear it will damage property values and the quality of life in the area. Bob Black, owner of Catalina Passenger Service, said a r~porter from the Michigan paper called him up and uked him about places to go and things to do in ·the Newport Beach area. "I told him, of course, about the Catalina trips,• Black said. "(And) about the harbor cruis- es, shops and boating ... and the number of restaurants along the waterfront and in Newport Beach.• There's one problem -the reporter is a phantom, because nobody can remember his name. Black said he couldn't recall the reporters name but said a photographer from the newspa- per, David Gilke, took a ride on one of his cruises to take pic- tures of the harbor, the Fun Zone and some of the boats in the area. But Black's not the only per- son the reporter talked to. Bal- boa Peninsula residents Bill Kelly and his wile, Gay Wassall- Kelly, were also was contacted by the unknown reporter because they own a tugboat called the S.S. Michigan. Wassail-Kelly said the reporter told her he saw the boat on a television program showing the Newport Harbor Christmas Boat Parade, and now the S.S. Michigan is the "Newport Beach mucot• for the University ot Mlchigan and its football team. The teem and fans of Michi- gan will be staying in Newwrt Beach for the Rose Bowl. People can access the story via the Internet at the Detroit Free Press' websi~ at http://www.freep.com . police briefs Santa Ana man injured in Costa Mesa crash COSTA MESA -A Santa Ana man was seriously injured early Wednesday when the motorcycle he was driving on Superior Avenue was struck by a car trav- eling in the opposite direction, police said. Kevin Phillips, 23, was riding south in the 1500 block of Superi-· or between Dana Road and Industrial Way at about 6:12 a.m. when a car driven by Patricia Escobar, 20, hit tum. Witnesses told investigators Escobar apparently was making a left-hand tum into a driveway m front of the oncoming Phillips when the accident occurred, police said. Phillips, who was wearing a helmet when he was hit, suffered major injuries, including a severely fractured left leg and multiple abrasions and lacerations, police said. He was transported to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, where officials listed him in seri- ous but stable condition. Escobar, also from Santa Ana, reportedly was not hurt in the accident. ADDBESS There was no indic:ation that alchohol or drugs were factors in the accident, and an investigation continues, police said. Gunman robs liquor store in Costa Mesa A gunm~n made off With $250 to $300 after robbing a liquor store Tuesday night, police said. The man walked into Mr. B's liquor store at 2205 Fairview Road around 9:50 p.m., waited until other customers left the store and asked the lone female clerk how much a pack of M & M's cost, said Costa Mesa police Lt. Ron Smith. Throwing a dollar bill on the counter to distract the clerk. the gunman then pulled a silver-col- ored pistol from his waistband and demanded cash. Smith said. The gunman was seen fleeing on foot toward Avocado Street, Smith said. The gunman is described as 18 to 19 years old, dean-shaven with a light com- plexion and wearing a black knit cap, a black Los Angeles Kings warm-up jacket and dark pants, Smith said. . ·' \ . The new service, available free to residents of Costa Mesa and Santa Ana Heights, is offered at two Costa Mesa pharmacies - North Drugs, 1170 Baker St., and Steven's Pharmacy, 1525 Mesa Verde Drive Bast. To participate, residents can pick up a free quart-sized container from either of the pharmacies. Each contain- er bolds about 100 needles or syringes. When filled, residents can return the containers to the pharmacies for collection and receive another empty one. The used needles are picked up from the pharmacies, steril- ized and processed into reusable materials. For more information on the district's new needle and syringe recycling program. call 754-5043. Council awards pipeline job The Costa Mesa City Council on Monday awarded an Arcadia contractor the job of installing a new $318,000 underground storm drain near the intersection of 19th Street and Park Avenue. 1be con- tract -awarded during a -sped.al meeting scheduled on the coun- cil's week off to speed up the eagerly awaited project -went to W.A. Rasic Construction, which was the lowest bidder on the job. The company will be responsi- ble for installing about a half-mile of concrete piping in the area, where there are no storm drains. Officials hope to break ground next week and finish the job in about six weeks. The city recently received a federal flood-preparedness grant that will cover up to 88% of the project's total cost. The city will cover the remaining 12%, offi- cials said. Volunteers sought for tax ~ce program The IRS is looking for volun- teers to learn how to prepare tax- es and help their community at the same time. Along with the California Franchise Tax Board, the IRS sponsors the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. Volun- teers are trained to prepare basic federal and state intome tax returns. Thaining classes begin in January. After completion, volun- teers must donate a few hours a week. from Feb. 2 through April 15, to the program site of their choice.
