NEWPORT BEACH -The
owners of a 1'1.sti.n-based night-
club promotion company plans
to file suit against the Newport
Beach Tennis Club on Monday in
Harbor Municipal Court, claim-
ing a breach of contract over
plans for a nightclub at the facil-
ity.
Dano Smith of Newport
Beach, and bis partner, Rick
Brun, of Tustin, said their busi-
ness, Millennium Group -
which promotes upscale night-
clubs in the Orange County and
Los Angeles areas -entered
into a contract with the tennis
club to hold two nightclub events
in the bar area. The first event
was to be held Saturday, the sec-
ond one Jan. 10.
But Brun claims the club vio-
lated the agreement when it can-
celed those plans after his com-
pany spent several thousand dol-
lars in promotions. A spokes-
woman from the Newport Beach
Tennis Club denies the allega-
tions.
Brun said the tennis club's
then-bar manager, Tony Walsh,
approached him and Smith, say-
ing the club was •tooking to
increase its alcohol sales and was
interested in going into a joint
venture for a night.dub on Satur-
day nights.• He said Walsh knew
of Millenruum because of its oth-
er promotions in area bars,
including The Warehouse and
the Velvet Lounge.
Walsh since bas left the tennis
club and could not be reached
for comment.
According to the contract,
signed by Walsh, the club agreed
to play host to •two consecutive
events under the direction, con-
trol and supervision of (Millenni-
um Group)."
The contract also states if the
Newport Beach Tennis C lub
decides to cancel either of the
two events, it will reimburse all
costs and out-of-pocket expendi-
tures advanced by the Millenru-
um Group.

NEWPORT-MESA -Students
in the Newport-Mesa Unified
School District are about to get a
more vocal role in policy creation
and the superintendent search
process.
Starting in January, student
board members will be given
preferential voting and motion-
ing privileges. Preferential vot-
ing, while unequal to the vote of
an elected board member, gives
student board members a
stronger adVllory capadty. Their
votes, however, will not be
counted in the final decision-
making process.
The highest privilege a student
board member can get in the
state of California is that Of
motioning, which allows them to
bring issues up for a vote or to
second motions that have already
been brought up, requiring board
members to vote on them.
Spearheading the effort to get
those rights extended are student
board members Gal~ Fajardo, 1(1
Mehgan Fay, 15; Elizabeth Ben-
nett, 15; and Loren Krause, 17.

Andersen School
This is the second year in a row
that tbe student council (oom-
priled ol fourth-, fifth. and'mtb·
graders) from Andenen School
has raised money for an Adopt-a-
Family program for the holidays.
Tbe}r were responsible for get-
ting the word out to the other stu-
dents and doing daily collections
from each class. Together they
raised more than $1,700 plus
many individual donations of new
toys, jackets and clothes.

13th annual event that featwes host and defending
champion Estancia.
Glendale Hoover, a tournament mainltay, starts
first today against Montclair in a 2:30 p.m. tipoft,
then Coach Paul Orris' Corona del Mar Sea Kings
face Rialto at -':10 p .m. , .
Antioch, a North.em California power playing its
fourth straight year in the tournament, tackles three-
ttme champion Edison in an undercard at 5:50 p.m.,
then Coach Rich Boyce's Estancia Eagles will host
Pitt Meedows of British Columbia in the main event
tonight at 8. .
Though little is known about the Omad1ans, the
Manwden list senior center Bryson TI.edenvm at
6-foot-10, the tallest player in the tournament.
Pool play continues Satwday and Monday, with
the championship game slated for Tuesday night at
7:30. •

holiday tournaments), but I've always
enjoyed the Estancia tournament -it has
good competition and great ribs for the
