Her story touched the hearts
of many. One Costa Mesa resi-
dent offered to give the family
money, another local wanted to
don.ate a wheelchair, and one of
Jaflia'• neighbor searched high
and low for a Singing Barbie to
give her for Christmas. The
shopper didn't have any luck
finding a Singing Barbie, but she
did flnd a suitable replacement.

peaked around 12:45 p .m .,
when some boaten had trouble
maneuvering their sails for
about 15 minutes.
"We had two vessels on the
rocks,· said Harbor Patrol Sgt.

Porsches target of auto theft ring

CORONA DEL MAR -Two
suspects, who may be part of a
larger car theft ring, were
arrested Friday night in connec-
tion with a series of thefts of
Porscbes in the east side of
Corona del Mar.
Brian Gooldy, 31, of Long
Beach and Jonathan Maciel,
21, of Garden Grove were
caught allegedly trying to
brea.k into a Porsche that was
parked on Marguerite Avenue,
near Pacific Coast Highway on
Friday night.
Both were charged with auto
theft and a.re being held in lieu
of $50,000 bail at the Newport
Beach Police Department.
Newport Beach officers
observed a 1996 Dodge pickup
pull up behind the car. Both sus-
pects got out of the van and
looked at the car, police said.
One of the suspects opened the
door, activating tbe car alarm.
The officers, who were
observing from a plain police
car, apprehended the suspects
and took them to the Newport
Beach Police Department.

Police said the theft ring is
based in Orange County but

have already registered their
discontent with such a plan
(Mater Dei has reserved
comment), and would likely
exhaustively punue appeals,
perhaps even through the
courts.
Orange County principals,
despite the urging of some
county superintendents, may
have to bite the bullet of
leaguing parochial schools with
public schools for another
two-year cycle, and hope a
compromise can be reached in
the next releaguing cycle.
The principals are scheduled
to meet and come up with a
proposal (again), Jan. 8.
