ents to the danger.

A 'Laguna Niguel attorney was
recently named to the Orange County
Fair and Exposition Center board of
directors by Gov. Gray Davis.
Ruben Smith, 42, was appointed to
the position last month and will
replace Don Willet of Newport Beach,
who served for eight ·years on the
board.
Smith is president-elect ot the
Orange County Hispanic Chamber of
Commerce and co-founder of the His-
panic Educational Endowment Fund.
He graduated from the University of
Southern California and did postgrad-
uate work at Yale University.
Smith is a pdrtner of the Irvine law
firm Alvarado, Smith & Sanchez.
Smith is married and has two chil-
dren.

for work program

money will help support the college's
CalWorks Center, whlcb supports
3,000 students every semester who
have come back to school following a
break in their education.
The gilt will be used to fund 200
OCC reentry students annually who
need assistance but don't immediate-
ly qualify for government-supported
programs.
"The ability to immediately pro-
vide assistance to deserving students
before they qualify for state-support-
ed assistance programs can often
mean the difference between a stu-
dent enrolling at OCC or giving up on
his or her educational dreams," said
Nicolette Jackson, the center's direc-
tor.

small measures of support tor stu~
dents, such as bus passes, gasoline
voUcbers, interim child care, book

A 65-foot sailing vessel belonging
to OCC finished in the top third of an ,.
annual boating race in Australia.
The Alaska Eagle finished 24th out
of 80 boats in the Telstra Sydney to
Hobart Yacht Race, which was staged .
between Chfistmas and New Year's
Day.
Only 50 yachts finished the 630·
nautical-mile race. The rugged race
touted by Australians as "The Sail of
the Century" claimed six lives in
1996. No one was injured this time,
but the sailing crews did have their
share of problems.

OCC's captain, Brad Avery. "All
afternoon and evening, we crashed
along, with the boat launching off

OBITUARY
William R. Mirams
William R. Mirams. a longtime
Newport Beach resident, died
peacefully of natural causes at his
home on Dec. 14. He was 91.
Mr. Mifams was born on April
30, 1908, in St. Albans, England.
He worked in the Grajn
Exchange in Winni~, Canada, ·
before moving to tlie United
States in the 1920s.
Mr. Mirams joined The Griffith
Company in Los Angeles at that
time. The Griffith Company 11<as
instrumental in developing Lido
Isle. While with the company, Mr.
Mirams managed the "Richards '
Complex" on Lido. He was with
The Griffith Company for more
than 65 years.
Mr. Mira.ms was a member of
the Newport Harbor Yacht Club,
the Irvine ColUltry Club and Big
Canyon Country Club.
He is survived by his wife, Jer-
ri, of Newport Beach; son,
William, of Idaho; four grandchil-
dren and four great-grandchil·
dren. In lieu of flowers, Mr.
Miram1s family ts asking that
donations be made to the Salva-
tion Anny, 1:us favorite charity. . ,.

years ago, a Newport Beach
couple had a vision of tho kind
of Jugh school they wanted for
their four children. When they
didn't find it in Orange Coun-
ty, Dori and James Caillouette
decided to create it.
Their vision ha~ become
reahty. Sage Hill School, the
first private nondenomination-.
al. school in Orange County, •
will o_pen its doors iri Newport
Beach tJus September.
Nestled on a hillside
between Newport Coast Drive
and the San Joaquin Toll
Road, the 140,000-square-foot
campus will encompass 22 of
30 acres of agriculturally
. zoned land owned by the
Irvine Company. The remain-
ing eight acres will create a
barrier of coastal sage and a
pond between tlre school and ·
the toll road.
"They've been very sup-
portive of the project (rom the
begiruting, so it wasn't very
difficult,"· said Karina Hamil-
ton, the school's thief operat-
ing officer.
So far, trustees have raised
nearly $34 million toward an
estimated construction cost of
about $60 million, with an
additional $5 lo $8 million
expected for start-up costs,
said Clint Wilkins, who will
head up the staff at Sage Hill.
The project will be com-
pleted m two major phases,
the first of which will be done
by September. The second,
Hanulton said, should begin in
2001.
The first phase, costing $30
million, includes the athletic
fields and four of the seven
buildings. The first buildrngs
will be a humanities building,
which will house 28 class-
rooms, a library with a 150:
seat multimedia lecture hall, a
community center and a gym-
nasium.
Phase II, costing another
estimated $30 million, will
include a math, soence and
technology building, an arts
center and an aquatic center.
But the Caillouettes' vision
was for more than a nice view
and a .brand-new school.
They were look.mg for a
strong arts and commuruty-
servtce program on an mti-
mate campus with a diverse
faculty and stude nt body
where their children would
have close interaction with
teachers.

selves," said Don Caillouette.
"Kids love to accept chal-
lenges and nse to the level." .
Part of that challenge needs
to be serving the community,
she added.

that it was essential to thejr
children's growth for them to
be surrounded by a diverse
student body.
