With designs for the Charle and Hamilton park now in the final stages, city staff are less than a month away from bid- ding for a contractor to build the park -although plans may be tossed back to the drawing board if the COW\ol votes to reve~ its October decision. Residents continue to express emotional oputions about a skateboard park and its location. No gf'1 nt computer crashes. No planes f alllng from the sky. No ATM machines spitting out · -__ money. But while the much-anticipated world drama 11 didn't pan out, there was no shortage of it here, with the fi ght over the anti-El Toro Measure F, the squab- bles between library trustees and the fo undation, the contentious and costly battles over the Greenlight lnillative and. of course. the surprise adclitions to the Costa Mesa City Council. Newport Beach in part.Icular had a raucous year with the anti-growth battle that pitted friends and family members against each other in the debate over the city's future developments. And Costa Mesa is already showmg ttiat with the addition of council members Chris Steel and Karen Robinson, there could be more rancor on the council than accord . .. -.. -................. - So just as President-elect George W. Bush has promised a new spirit of co111promise and bipartisan- ship, we'd like to propose the same for our local leaders arrd residents. Let's make 2001 the year that petty diffe re nces are set aside and goals a re reached in a number of quarters. There's much to accomplish. Top on the list should be a new set of flight restric- tions and passenger caps for John Wayne Airport that will put to rest any ideas of e xpansion and ensure some semblance of tranquillity for our residents. In Newport Beach, city leaders need to face the new reality of Greenlight and develop new guide- lines that will allow developers and residents to live in harmony once again. 1 But most of all, we propose that we all get better at communication . Not only should local council members make every effort lo hear the concerns of their constituents, but those same constituents need to become more involved with local government so they will always feel that their voices are heard. Evolution can't be proved by experinlent, as can other laws of nature, such as the laws of physics, mathematics or gravity. The Vipers won their opener against Rancho Santa Margarita, 3-0. Goals were scored by Kenneth Zich, JayBenny Quiroz and Brian Cozza.
