Eric Bechler, 33, repeatedly refut-
ed accusations that he murdered his
38-year-old wife, Pegye Bechler, or
that he had ever plotted to dump her
in the ocean. Bechler said he uutiaJ-
ly thought his wife was "playing a
trick" on him when be came up
from under the water and saw that
she was not on the boat.
"The wave hit, and 1 feU m, • he
recalled. •And when I came back
up, she was gone, and the boat was

Prosecutors have accused Bech-
ler of knocking hls wife on lhe head
wtth a dumbbell and pushing her
body mto the ocean. He pas pleaded
not guilty -cons1Stently ma.mtwn-
mg, as be did Thursday, that tu.s wife
was swept overboard by a wave that
hit the speedboat while she was
towing him on a bodyboard.
On Thursday, a sort-spoken Bech-
ler de&cribed the events preceding
hLs wife's disappearance. HIS calm
and collected demeanor on the wit-
ness stand was in sharp contrast to
the behavior Jurors have witnessed
from him on audio and videotapes

gram's massive purchasing power
to get as much as a 50% discount,

Brown and the girl
who has a never-ending
crush on Linus.
But to Knstin
Chenoweth, who won a
Tony Award tor her por-
trayal of the charact~r in
the 1999 Brbadway pro-
duction of "You're a Good
Man, Charlie Brown,• the
precocious 4-year-old is
strong and able. Second
to Charles Schultz, the
"Peanuts" comic strip cre-
ator, Chenoweth may
know Sally best.
"She's got a ferocity
and an aggressiveness not
often seen in women, let
alone kids,· the 32-year-
old performer said.
"That's attractive to me
for a role -women with
a strong personailty,
instead of bemg the VlC·
tim or someone who's
weak."
Chenoweth, who per-
forms a compilation of
'30s and '40s music at the
Orange County ~rfonn
ing Arts Center through
Sunday as part of the
2000-01 Cabaret Series,
shares Sally's personality.
"I'm not quite as
aggressive as she is, but
I'd like to think we're
both strong and able
types." she said.
Chenoweth keeps her

herself, "I didn't really
win that, did I?• she said.

Her debut album will
hit stores next month. And
in March, Chenoweth will
star in her own NBC com-
edy series titled •Kristin,•

a struggling Broadway
actress working as an
executive assistant.

inaugural balls. Big states
have their own balls, little
states pitch an together. But
even that's a bit of a scam.

little to do with each ball.

person -and you buy your

Like presidents, some are
better than others. The Prez
& Co. race from one to the
next, spendtng a few nun-
utes at edch "ball" -which
are really cocktail parties on
stermds. They might not be
gone in 60 seconds, but I can
tell you they are definitely
gone in five rrunutes. Of
course, the most devastating,
ego-bruising blow maugural-
1tes can endure is to not have
the first couple show up at
your ball at all That's when
you know exactly where you;
and your state, stand.
I should have cracked the
code when I hrst saw our
tickets. We were on our way
to the "Cdllfomia Ball" at
the JFK Center, with which I
am familiar. Hmm, I thought,
that's an odd place for a ball.
Other than the theater itseU,
the only other space of any
size would be the lobby, an
impressive lobby, but a lob-
by nonetheless. Still hopeful,
we worked our way up dlld
out of the parking structure,
along with thousands of oth-
er inaugural-ites. Our desti·
nation was, in fact, the lob·
by. No tables, no chaJis, JUSl
lobby.
By the time the escalators
stopped disgorging wave
after wave of foot sold!ers an
full-battle, everung gown,
black-tie· dress -at was a
shoulder-to-shoulder, cheek-
to-jowl. whatever-to-whatev-
er crush or hurnaruty
Wherever your forward
progress stopped is exactly
where you spent the rest of
your evenintJ -1ust you dfld

pet. Whal people were wear-
mg was. irrelevant. Frankly,
you could have been naked

"(Klien) played well,• Davis said.
"There were some bright spots.
(Otterbien} had some good plays,
too. There were other girls who were
not stepping up to the plate. And,
that's why I'm starting different line-
ups every game because I'm trying
to find five girls who are going to
play hard and execute.•
... Davis has had different starting
lineups in each of the first four
league games. Before taking on Uni,
be jokingly flipped a coin to decide
who would start.
