NEWPORT-MESA -The dfeam of
opening a charter school in the New-
port-Mesa Unified School District
won't be realized as quickly as hoped.
Numerous postponements of a
needed public bearing and school
board vote on the Mesa Leadership
Academy -the charter school pro-
posed by a group of parents in Octo-
ber -have made the goal of operung
the school in the fall impossible.
·0ur new date is 2002, • said Kara
Chichjian-Handy, a member of the
academy's executive board.
The group of parents bas twice
extended the deadline by which the
school district's board of education
must vote on the group's petition for a
charter sChool. •
The reason, advocates said, is that
they are finally involved in construe-
tive talks with the distnct as to what lS
best for the proposed school and com-
munity.
That deadline will not be post·
poned agam, ChichJian-Handy said. ·u anything, (talks) should be mov-
ing a bit more quickly now,· she said.

Parents hope to open a charter
school that during its first year would
serve 320 students in kindergarten
through third grade.
They plan to add fourth and fifth
grades over the subsequent two yean.

Julia Lee's not qwte sure where the
name "candy striper" comes from.
Maybe somebody chose the nickname
for Hoag Hospital's teen volunteers pro-
gram because one of the unHorm
options slightly resembles a candy cane.
For a
GOOD CAUSE
What
Lee does
know is
that she's
h e lped
for at least 550 hours at the hospital over
the last four years.
And 1t aJJ happened, more or less, by
accident.
One of Lee's friends had joined the
program before her, and the girl's stones
perked Lee's interest.
"It sounded really cool," Lee said. "lf
you wanted a job in the medicaJ field,
you get to see what it's like •

Now a 17-year-old senior at Corona
del Mar High School, Lee went through
the candy striper orientation and has put
in lime in various departments through-
out the hospital.
She started in transportation, where
she helped to admit and discharge
pdtienls from the hospital
Then came some time at nursing sta-
llons, where she answered patients'
calls and told nurses about their
requests.
Lee. who serves as the president of
the hospital's 140-plus candy stripers,
now works m the cardiac care unit,
where she helps at the reception and
lets nurses know when visitors arrive.
While the program has given her
ms1ght into the daily life of nurses and

A memorable event occurred when
Lee bad just started working at a m.U'S-
ing station. On her first day, a patient
just across the hall died.
While Lee did not see the body, she
srud the calmness of the nurses and doc-
tors impressed her.
~Everyone was doing their job,• sbe
said.
Alter graduation from high school.
Lee said she'll head north to attend
Stanford University in the fall.
Sbe still doesn't know what she'll
study at college, but medicine is defi-
nitely an option.
Will she miss her time at the hospital?
"Yeah," she said. ·Because I made a

embarrassed, the City Council
on Monday selected its new
planning and parks commis-
s1ons.
The process was a frantic
flurry of norrunations, substi-
tute nommabons and inter-
ruptions.
Councl members lost track
of the number of times they
voted, nusvoted and asked to
clear the boards for "do-overs·
and struggled to get the floor
for nommabons.

Libby Cowan refused to allow
Councilman Chris Steel to
make a mobon, Councilman
Gary Monahan asked for the
chance to speak and then

last year. "I'm disappointed but
looking forward to whatever
challenges lie ahead."
Sutro said he thinks his
message that the city needs to
reach a balance between busi-
nesses and residents bas

"People put traffic and busi-
ness in the same group, and
they don't like traffic.• he said.
"But we all need doctors, phar-
macies, clothing stores, com-
puter stores and other services
we need to run our lives, and
that creates a lot of traffic
