At times, Donnelley said, the monsoon rains would become intense, turning into golf ball- sized hail that . drowned out the con- versation. But after many months of talk- ing, Donnelley bad captured Pachen's story and turned it into a book, "Sorrow Mountain." Donnelley and Pachen come to-. the Oasis Senior Center in Corona del Mar tonight to speak about the book Cllld the political situation in Tibet. As the title of of Donnelley's work suggests, the tale they will tell is colored by grim experiences. Pacheo was the daughter of a powerful chieftain in the province of Kham in Eastern Tibet. In 1950. the year she turned 17, the Chinese invaded the country. Pacben, who bad been training to become a nun, was imprisoned. For the next 21 years, she was kept in a cell and suffered repeated torture. It was not until 1981, when ten- sions between China and Tibet eased somewhat, that Pachen was released. By that ti.me, Donnelley saiq, much of the relatively idyllic land Pachen had grown up in had been wiped off the planet. "The Chinese destroyed 6,000 monasteries. Another presidential hopeful is profiled in •John HE McCain, A.n ONTENDE American Odyaey." Rather than teanng herself apart with rage and remorse, Pachen has become a kind of activist nun, a woman who pursues spiritual depth through a fierce commitmept to publicizing and working to improve the Tibetan situation. "People from Kham are very strong, feisty people,• Donnelley said. "But she's also drawn to the kind of contemplative life. She sort of divides her time between telling the world what happened in Tibet and spending a great deal of time in prayer and retreat.• But Pachen's ability to retain her headstrong nature after the horrible experiences of her middle years seems to be rooted in another source. Donnelley attributes it to the woman's strong spiritual view~. From his bumble origins to his rise to the presidency, Pulitzer Prize-winner Irwin Unger paints a sympathetic portrait of our 36th president in •LBJ: A Life." In addition to exploring LBJ's charisma and unpredictability, this readable volume provides an insightful analysis of the Vietnam conflict that made the period during which LBJ occupied the White House one of the most tumul- tuous in recent histo- ry. Beginning with bis rambunc- tious child- hood, through his grim experi- ences as a 'POW in Vietnam, this new biography provides a fine introduction to the Arizona senator who has captured th~ imagination of many Americans. For Donnelley, the task of writ- ing "Sorrow Mountain" was a major undertaking. Her previous work, a book called "Boundary Water: was a memoir, and by her own admis- sion she knew nothing about Tibet. But activists for the Tibetans, including Richard Gere. liked the power and nuance of her writing. "People liked the way J could get inside a woman's mind and talk about things !rom a woman's per- s~ctive, • Donnelley said. In Dharamsala, Donnelley com- pensated for what she didn't know by her steady persistence in going through Pachen's life story. "I just went inch by inch and tried to get as much detail as I could." she said. . Then, in 1998. she brought Paclien to the United States. The nun stayed with the author in Don· nelley's Berkeley home, and the 1\iJogy Playhouse ts at 2930 Bristol St, Costa Mesa, in tbe beck of the Lab Anti-Mall. The Buddhist emphasis on the temporary nature of being also plays an important role in Pachen's thought. • U you see things against the backdrop of impermanence, it's much more easy to not be attached and to put suffering in perspective,• Donnelley said. But however it can be explained, Pachen's fierce response to the adversity of her life is something Donnelley said can resonate with a wide audience. Anorexia and its sister affliction, bulirru.a, are mental heaJth problems that largely go unnoticed by the medical community -despite the fact that both are We-threatening. Doctors don't know much about eating disorders unless they have been spcoally trained. Blood tests, administered when thin patients come m for help, show nothing out of the ordinary unless tec.hnioans know what to look for. And anorex- ia has one of the highest death rates among psychiatric illnesses, but no federal funding. There is money for akoholism and drug addiction, but patients starve to death every day. Anorexia is perceived by many as sell-induced starvdtion that the victims can start and stop at will. · Well-mearung people offer cookies and hamburgers and cakes as their way of saying "get over it -eat sometlung." Wish it was that simple. Both anorexia and bulimia are illnesses that most of us JUSt don't under- stand. To an anorexic, dieting is not a varuty issue; rather it's a coping mechanism to deal with stress, self- hate, hurt and shame. Our daughter knows that u she doesn't eat, she could die. But someUung inside stops her from consuming what the rest of us con- sider a "normal" meal. There were ti.mes we would go into a restaurant and have lo tum around 8Jld leave because it scared her. I would ask what was scaring her and her answer would be H the food.• Rational? To her it was. And that's all that counts to someone with an eating disorder. Thy bei,ng a parent of an anorexic and getting looks from strangers that ~Y "Look at her, she's not feed- • ing her own child." It's happened. And there's nothing I or any other parent in my situation can do about it but to try to educate the ignorant. Part of our coping mechanism is logging online to one of several groups that deal with eat- ing disor- ders and touching base with other par- ents to share our frustration and pain. A few weeks ago, another set of par- ents logged on, aslung for help for their anorexic 13-year- old, who had been ny being a par- ent of an anorexic and getting looks from strangers that say "Look at her, she's not feeding her own child. Parents from all over the continent jumped in, offering their advice. The third time these parents logged on, the father was writing from the surgical waiting room - his daughter had a heart attack that morning and was undergoing open-heart surgery. His wife, a dia- betic, had also been admitted to the hospital for stabilization. 1\vo days later, the wife Jogged on, thanking people for their thoughts and prayers, saying that their daughter had been changed -I believe her word was "scared• -by the heart attack and that they were able to get her some help. Again, parents logged on and offered encouragement. Thi:. monung, when I logged on to share my good news, there was a bulletin from the girl's father. His daughter had died Saturday mom- in~. She sunply ran out of time. Anorexics gam control of what they perceive as perfection by starving themselves. Even though their bones protrude, they see themselves as fat. Defined Hat risk· when. they are 15% below their normal body weight (our daughter was 55% below her normal weight at adfT!ission), their menstrual cycles stop (if they ever started, as some 'girls are affected by anorexia before puberty) and they are con- sumed with a compulsiveness about food that rivals master chefs. They often collect recipes and talk about food, cooking elab- orate feasts for others, but deny- ing themselves sustenance. Bulimics may eat hearty meals with the crowd,• but pnvately purge themselves of the pleasure by vomiting, usmg laxatives, diuretics and enemas as well as excessive exercise. Both anorexia and bulimia are mistakenly believed to tie illnesses that affecl white, affluent young women, but an increasing number of cases are being found in males and minorities. It affecls all age groups and all ethnicities. Eating disorders do not discrimi- nate. Everyone is welcome to low sell-esteem, a cornerstone in the eating disorder profile. This is Eabng Disorders Aware- ness Week, a movement started by the national Eabng Disorders Awareness _and Prevenbon group in I •' Doily Pilot an attempt to focus ~ucation and outreach efforts with parents, teachers, therapists, doctors, nutri- tionists and friends. The group hopes to change cul- tural attitude and values contribut- ing to eating disorders and help those afflicted to break the cycle. Their theme, •Don't Weigh Your Self-Esteem .. ll'i What's lnSlde That Counts" goes right to the heart of the matter. Anorexics and bulimics are still loving, canng, intelligent, giving members of society who must deal ·with an mner "bastard" (my daughter's word for it) that gets m the way every minute of every day. • If you have a child, relative, classmate or friend you suspect may be suffering from an eabng disorder, talk to thern. CdM, coming off its fourth title-game appearance of the 1990s last season, is gunning to return to the section show- case game, with All-CIF returner Kevin Hansen lead- ing the way. Hansen, a senior Stanford- bound setter who has also played in two section title matches in volleyball, is aver- aging 21.1 points and seven rebounds. A broken left (shooting) wrist sidelined Morris for 13 games, but he returned six games ago and appears to be back in top form. In the 10 games irl which Hansen, Hanson and Morris have all played, CdM is 8-2, including a four-game winning streak to 9onclude the regular sea- son.
