though the road ahead is clearly bumpy.

"It's tough out there. The water 1S cold
and there are rocks underneath. It's also
a big commitment. but the working con-
ditions are pretty good •

latest movie.

dings for Adventures at Sea. ·Most of my
brides have a budget and all of (Lopez's]
clients have an un.l.uruted budget. And
then she Calls in love with the groom and
we don't want that lo happen here.•
While wedding packages al the com-
pany start at about $6,500, bride and
groom can push the amount as high as
they want. In return, DiBenedetto and her
colleague, Leslie Blakely, will pamper the
couple and take care of everything from
champagne to loose buttons.

Preparations can start as early as a
year m advance. but sometunes every-

Depending on the number or guests, cou-
ples pick one or the company's boats that
can hold between 75 and 250 people.
"lt's so rewarding to get to see them in
the beginning stages,• said Blakely, who
majored m speciaJ events while at col·
lege. "It's so exciting to be part of some-
one's special day.·
On the wed.ding day itsell, DiBenedet-
to and Blakely handle everything from
greeting guests to looking after the needs
of the couple, who get ready for the big
"yes~ in the yacht's state rooms.
DiBenedetto points out that the rooms
are air-conditioned. In the summer, that's
helped to prevent ma1or mishaps.

she said.

with the idea, her colleagues have
already assured her that she won't have
to coordinate her own wedding.

Soccer tourney needs to net volunteers by May
I remember bow shocked I
was when I heard the sta-
tistic -more kids today
play soccer than they do Lit-
tle League.
Soccer?
I have to admit right now,
I never did •get• soccer. To
me, the whole game seemed
like a lot of running up and •
down the field chasing balls,
kicking and head butting
with very little reward.
So how could it be? How
could soccer be more popu-
lar than baseball? More pop-
ular than pitching curve
balls, or hitting line drives
and in the park home runs?
More popular than the most
revered thing in America
next to mom and apple pie?
Well I can't explain it, but
it is.
Which makes it a little
more than surprising that the
local Lions Club dropped its
annual soccer tourney a cou-
ple years ago that was
known as, what else, the
Lions Cup. The abandon-
ment of the Lions Cup left a
void in the growing soccer

An exhibition showcasing
Newport Harbor's most popu-
lar cruising destinabon opens
at the Newport Harbor Nauti-
cal Museum Friday.
The exhibit, "Catalina and
the Channel Islands, New-
port's Offshore Neighbors,•
will focus on the nautical his-
tory of Santa Catalina and the
seven other offshore sentinels
that make up California's
Channel Islands.
While Catalina, the most
accessible island, is familiar to
the general public, the other
seven remain known to a rel-
ative few -quiet, seldom vis-
ited, and cloaked in obscurity.
The exhibit explores the
islands' maritime evolution
from prehistoric planked
canoes to modem day plea-
sure yachts and sportfishing
vessels. Displays include

Then came Kirk Mcintosh.
The Costa Mesa attorney
formerly served on a local ~ .. ·
American Youth Soccer
Organization boa.rd and
coached the game at Kaiser
Elementary. His kids played
in the Lions Cup tourney.
So Mcintosh had a brain-
storm one day while working
out at the gym with a couple
of former Daily Pilot editors.,
Bring back the Lions Cup, he
thought. just call it some-
thing else.
The, editors agreed and
thus the Daily Pilot Cup. was
Indian artifacts, early explo-
ration charts, paintings, ship
models and photographs.
The show will run until
June 30 and admission is free.
The museum is open Tuesday
through Sunday from 10 a.m.
to 5 p.m. and is located at 151
East Coast Highway. Infor-

City officials have set up a
telephone number and e-mail
address to allow residents to
comment on a controversial
proposal to put an arts and edu-
cation center on open space
land behind the central library.
While the innovations have
been set up on a temporary

Mcintosh took the lead
and attempted to get every
school, both public and pri-
vate, tn the Newport-Mesa
area to put up a soccer team
to compete in the event.
The result was hwidreds
of boys and girls who partid-
pattid in the inaugural event
last year and several hefty
trophies to go around. nus year's cup, which is
slated to take place May 17 -
20, will have four divisions:
Third-and fourth-grade boys,
third-and fourth-grade girls.
fifth-and sixth-grade boys
and fifth-and sixth-grade
girls. It's the only tournament
in the Newport-Mesa area
that pits one school against
another. Mcintosh said.
•I just like to see my kids
play with their school
chums,· Mcintosh said,
explaining his push to revive
the Cup.
But despite all his good
intentions, Mcintosh has
found he needs plenty of
help with the event.

voice their opinions on other

bling things last week while
keeping tabs on the Costa
Mesa City Council.
First we learned that City
Attorney Jeny Scheer and
the rest or the top-rank.mg
offioals and council members
had no idea that, according
to a city ordinance, abstatn-
ing from a vote without
announcing a conflict of
interest was the same as cast-
ing a "Yes" vote.
That such an important
law could he blurred into
obscurity was a bit troubling.
But more lroubl.tng was

The way to avoid situations like the
one Howarth got himself into is to stay
outside of the pack. At least that's what
Katie Ad.noff, a 16-year-old from New-
port Beach, said.
"I could have done a lot better, but ,
that water was so cold,• said Adnoff, woe
came in 57th overall. "But at least I was-
n't caught in the pack. You just hav~ to
stay outside of it, even though they s6y'
you should stay close by the buoy. That
way, you do end up passing people.•
Adnoff also said that when she first
jumped in the water to make the first
swim, she wasn't sure she was going to
make it through the waves.
·1 couldn't breathe because it was so
cold. When you Jump into water like
that, you just gel the wind knocked out
of you.· she said, as she huddled with
friends under a patio heater outside of
the Weguard station.
Last year at the tryouts, the waters
were chilly and it was raining. Lifeguard
Junmy Reideler of Lake Forest said.
"When f tned-out last year, I made it,
but the waters were so cold you couldn't
breathe, so r know what these guys are
gomg through,· the 19-year-old said,
pomting at the hopefuls sprinting down
the beach during the run-swim-run.
•And it's so competitive. There's' a lot of
elbows and grabbmg. It's horrible. But it's
a great job. I hope to be here for a while.•
Nathan Weiner, a 15-yedr-old from
Newport Beach who came in fourth over-
all, agreed that the water couJd hdve been
wanner. but Sdid he just kept kicking to
stay warm. He also said he can't Wdit to be
a lifeguard. and for one reason only.

"The fact is, it's not just
Costa Mesa," he said. "We

operation. It's like if Newport
Beach wanted to downgrade
PCJ,( to two or four lanes. We
wouldn't allow it. That's why
we have a master plan;
because these changes
impact the entire region.·

streets, he said.
According to a 1997 study,
between 40% and 60% of
residential tramc on the East-
s1de is cut-through tralfic.
A HISTORY OF DISPUTES
The narrow divide
between the plan that
Naghavi recommends and
the one supported by the ad
hoc committee is the result of
14 months of discussion and
compromise.
The dispute between the
two alternatives is a much
tamer version of the heated
disagreement that emerged at
the beginning of discussions,
when the city formed the ad
hoc committee of merchants
and homeowners to discuss
plans for widening East 17th
Street from Orange to Irvine·
a.venues, Naghavi said.
"From day one, it was obvi-
ous that the business members
don't want six lanes and I do,•
he said. *I think we've come to

The plan to widen the
street has been part of the
city's plan for dealing with
mcreasing traffic on the street
since 1957.
The county's t,ralhc plan
differs, requiring six lanes
only from Orange to Santa
Ana avenues.
Merchants and residents,
who in May formed the East
Side Cornmuruty and Mer-
chants Assn. to oppose the
plan, said either plan would
be detrimental to business
and to the nearby neighbor-
hoods.
"The city wanted to make
it into a six-lane highway and
we don't want six lanes,•
Hemphill said. "What needs
to happen now ls the whole
thing needs to be downgrad-
ed to four lanes all the way
through, so no future city
council will get it into their
heads to make it six lanes.
Then we'd have to go
through this whole thing all
over again."
Options that have been
discarded by the conunittee
include not only the six-lane
plan, but also a five-lane plan
and a hybrld plan matching
the county's general plan.

so, as a weekend filler,

Raff. at the time, was Oxy's
starting senior defensive tackle

CaWorrua Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference choice.
"It was a close game
(agamsl USO) and we ended up
winning,• said Ralf, who still has

televised Oxy-USD game.
"It was a pretty big deal at the
nine at little Oxy. Hank Stram
was the television announcer.·
Raff. a former South Coast
Plaza Player of the Month whose
large-framed photo once hung
above the mall's famous
merry-go-round because of his
CdM gridiron exploits, never
intended to be a walk-on player
at a larger college.
With his size (5-foot-10, 185
pounds) and family background
-his mother and brother
attended the private Eagle
Rock-based college -Oxy was a
perfect fit.

"What football did for me, and
what other things do for kids,
gave me confidence and taught
me sportsmanship. It was a very
good thing. It's not important
that kids play football, but that
they play something. It makes
them feel good about
them.selves and
teaches them to
have confidence in
themselves ... football
definitely did that for
me.•

191-pound divisions,
Raff, who grew up on
Balboa Island, didn't
start football until later
in We (eighth grade),
when he first met Freeman.
"I felt I started playing
football a little bit late,· Raff
said, • ... out in high school I
knew some kids who were kind
of tired of it and burned out,
because they'd been playing so
many years (beginning as a
youth).
"For me, I thought it worked
out pretty well. I was so excited
and interested in getting better
that it kept my interest up. There
are probably different theories
and ways to go there. It's hard
for kids to just go out and play
(football) in the street."
In the eighth grade, Raff
played for the Pop Warner Costa
Mesa Chiefs and waNtrst
exposed to Freeman.
·111e coach who made the
most impact and significance in
my life is Coach Dick Freeman,•
said Raff, who followed Freeman
to the freshmen football level at
CdM, then to the varsity under
head coach Dick Morris.
*It was just when Coach
Freeman was getting started in
coaching," Raff added. "He .
taught me some good life
'lessons, like always giving 110%1
when you get knocked down,
get back up. I have a lot of
admiration for bim. Dick ~orris
was a good coach, but Dick
Freeman was my mentor.•
ln Raff's senior year, CdM
gained a share of the Sea View
League title with Costa Mesa
and cranked out its first
postseason win, then lost to
eventual CIF Central Conference
champion Mission Viejo, 20-7, in
the quarterfinals.
As a junior in 1977, Raff was
selected first-team All-Sea View
League as a noseguard.
Raff, who lives in San Jose
with his wife of 16 yea.rs, Kate,
and two kids, is the latest
honoree ln the Dally Pilot Sports
Hall of Fame. ,.

I n the. ephemeral world of high
school sports, longevity is an
achievement unto itself. As a
parade of walk-ons annually render
prep coaching directories obsolete
and, as we've seen in recent years,
coaching jobs can change hands
more than once within days, the
grizzled sideline veterans are valued
links to tradition.

stability fostered by having just three
head coaches since the winter of 1969.

focus toward Orris after the
buzzer sounded, following a
big Sea King victory. Nearly
without tail, he'd unleash
Tandy Gillis began the run with a
seven-season stint that carried through
1976. The late Jack Errion took over for
the next 10 seasons, before anointing
Paul Onis, who'd spent the previous
16 seasons coaching the freshman
team, his handpicked successor.
Orris, who resigned Feb. 26 after
15 seasons as the Newport-Mesa
District's career leader in victories
(229), officially let go of the torch
Sunday night, at the conclusion of
the team's awards banquet.

ensuring that torch falls into capable
and committed hands.
Jelnick said he met with Norton
recently and, while retaining an
on-campus teacher as coach is a
•strong priority,• uncertainty exists
about whether a teaching position
will be offered to the new coach.

Before the new coach a.rrlves, ·
however, more Orris appreciation is
in order. '
The glowing testimonials that
followed his resignation were about
as easy to collect as oxygen. And I
have a few memories of my own that
stand out.
First off, anyone who asks
questions for a living, can appreciate
Orris' willingness to provide thoughtful
and thorough responses, even In the
most trying circumstances.
While most reporters cringe when
faced with a post-loss confab, Orris'
professionalism transcended even
the most difficult defeat.
Further, a reporter could often
initiate an Orris interview with a sin-
bis shot put-sized right fist along tus
waist in an emphatic pump that
celebrated his kids' effort more than
the final score.
I remember him providing stem
council during the postgame
handshake line to a high-profile
opposing standout from South
Orange County, whose on-court
showmanship was, Orris believed,
beneath his stature as a player. I
bet the player remembers it, too.
I remember Onis' best Godzilla
impression a few years ago, when he
smashed a remote-control car that, after
buzzing around the Newport Harbor
High court. came to rest at his feet
The tragic events at Santana
High in Santee last week evoked
a singular memory for me and,
no doubt, members of the 1993-94
Newport Harbor High girts
basketball team.
Those Sailors. coached by Shannon
Jakosky, defeated the host Sultans,
63-51 , in a Southern California
Regional semifinal game, March 10,
1994.
