July 8. S.J. Cahn DAILY PILOT CRYSTAL COVE -Residents of the state park's historic cottages will get one more Fourth of July by the ocean. " But under an agreement announced Tuesday, those living 1Il the 46 state-owned cottages will have to be out by July 8. The deal came after two or three meetings a nd a series of phone calls, said California State Parks spokesman Roy~Steams: "f think this l\S pretty well set in stone," Steams said. "The residents have agreed to it" Residents are ~cted to sign the agreement withio the next week, said cove resident Doug Falzetti, who declined to comment'further, saying · the state had asked residents not to talk with the media. · '" The deal was worked out among officials from the Department of Parks and Recreation and the Office of Historic Preservation, cove resident John Killen, and the residents' attor- ney, Deborah Rosenthal. The cove's cottages were placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. "I think this is pretty well set in stone. The residents hgve agreed to it." Stearns said a main cpnc~rn among residents was the 30-day evic- tion notice they received last month and, while the state is in a hurry to begin a state-mandated investiga- tion into possible pollution al the cove, officials wanted to be as accom- modating Q.s possible. "We've been playing a lot of volleyball and talking a lot as a group," Newport Coach Dan Glenn said. "I'm still trying to teach some of the guys to play under control and to have some flow to the match. It's probably not too fun with me yelling at them all the time, but 1 think we'll get to where we need to be." USC-bound Blake Tippett led the Sailors (6-3) with 14 kills, while junior Morgan Craig added 10 kills and three aces. Senior Aaron Yarnal (nine kills) and freshman Jamie Diefenbach (seven kills) also made contributions to Newport's offensive game plan. "If we were playing football or b~sketball, I'd take my t~am any day of the week,• Glenn said with a laugh. "But we're playing volleyball, so this period of the season is a major learning time for all of us."
