a candy cart at a local shopping center
-affords him the opportunity to speak

The perpetually baseball.-
capped former owner of Lar-
son's Shipyard was 89 years
old and died of heart compli-
cations March 15, his friend
Edward B. "Ted" Robinson
said.
"He was a father symbol
to everybody,• said Robin-
son, who bought the ship-
yard from Mr. Larson in 1978.
·workers and people at the
waterfront seemed to gather
around him wherever he
was.•
Perhaps it was his gen-
erosity that drew others to
him. For several winters. he
converted his shipyard into a
toy workshop, donating the
toy boats and planes he and
his crew carved to Toys For
Tots.
Or perhaps it was his
knowledge a nd love of ships
that he shared with nearly
everyone by the wharf.
"He always took his time
to explain things,• said Abe
Parra, 38, who began work-
ing for Mr. Larson 20 years
ago, soon after he immigrat-
ed from Acapulco. "He even
taught me some English.·
Mr. Larson, who opened
the shipyard on West Coast
Highway in 1947, had lots.of
experi~nce -_:Sometimes too
much.
"He wanted to be a fight·
er pilot in World War Il, but
they wouldn't let him,• said
Parra, who still repairs boats
a t Larson's. "They said
'You 're too good at boats.
You need to stay here and
pull boats.' •
It was probably for the
best. Mr. Larson, who began
flying small planes in his 50s,
once forgot to lower his land-
ing gear. He landed on the
plane's belly, grinding the
propeller into the tarmac, bu\
walked away safely.
Those who knew him said
his constant cheeriness -he
affectionately called friends
and strangers "Pal-sie" -
punctuated with a toothy
smile, are what made him
the nucleus of the Newport
nautical set.
"The smile was always
there, no matter how rough
he had it," Robinson said.

could be cooked in
microwave ovens, he taught

Newport Harbor High won a boys
league track and field bUe, Coach Bim

The 1981 Harbor graduate, was
an underclassmen competing for the
Sailors when the 1979 edition topped
the Sunset League competition.
That drought could be over,
however, if things break the way lhey
should for this year's squad, which
Barry said is considered the favorite
to win the reconfigured Sea View
League.
"It's going to be an exciting year,·
said Barry, in his 1 lth year coaching
in the program. The Sailors (1-gi open
league competition Thursday against
Irvin e. The meet will be at Irvine
High, to take advantage. of the
Vaqueros' lacihty, but the Tars are the
home team.
"The next best team should be
Woodbridge, but Aliso Niguel and
Laguna Hills (both Sea View

McMillan, seventh in ClF Division
U in the 800 as a sophomore, will
need time to regain his form after
some early season illness. His best
in the 800 is 1 :58.89.

After the novelty of having a
softball team wore off, Coro-
na del Mar High's softball
team went out and shocked
Back Bay rival Newport Har-
bor, 3-2, in a nonleague gam~
Tuesday.
,In their previous meeting,
the Sailors destroyed the Sea
Kings, 15·3, but the rematch
, was a completely different
story. Freshman Alissa Zoelle
pitched a cornelete game for .
CdM (3-5), scattering seven
hits and holding Newport (6-
4) to two runs.
The visiting Sailors took a
1-0 lead in the first inning
when Kristen Smith singled
in Athena Vasquez.
But CdM took the lead for
good by scoring all three of its
runs in the third inning. Amy
Tyson led off with a single,
and Zoelle, who w~t 2 for 3
at thre plate, doubled to put
two runnen in scoring posi-
tion. Mijanou Pham then sin-
gled both of them borne, and
a ground out by Lauren Loe
scored Pham.
Newport got its second run
in the fifth when Lindsay
Moore came in on a fielder's
choice, but it could not score
again as the Sailors stranded

sophomore competing for the
Irvine Novaquatics, set a
Southern CalifomJa record in
the 100-yard backstroke at
the California State Champi-
onship Team Title March 2-5.
Peirsol's time of 49.90
edged the old mark of 49.93
set by Derya Buyukuncu or
the Novaquatics in 1992.
Peirsol also won the 200
backstroke at 1:46.01 fo r the
Novaquatics.
Peirsol's teammate, Ryan
Lean, took fifth place in the
1,650 freestyle with a 15:55.0,
bettering his time by over 20
seconds.
