And if his experiences over the past year are any indica- tion. he just might be one of the few folks in Newport Beach who do. Ludmir is an 18-year-old Coro- na del Mar High School senior, and the brains behind Tolerance Day, an all-day symposium scheduled for May 30 on the high school's campus. The confab - which Ludmir hatched to fulfill his seniot:project requirements for gtaduation -will expose C::orona de! Mar students to six separate seminars on hate crime, internal and external prejudice, interfaith relations and faith diversity. ucorona del Mar is not a very diverse environment," Ludmir told me. •We live in a very homogenous community, and I ·wanted to get my peers to think __ :~about their own prejuc;lice and how th-ey interact with people.• That this handsome lad with jet-black hair -Harvard-bound this fall -would be the flint behind a tolerance movement among his high school brethren wasn't readily apparent to me a week ago when I met him. That's because he was standing before the trustees of the Newport-Mesa Unified School District, dishing up a reasoned and articulate affirmation of the board's contra· versial action to put the clamps on campus bullies under the dis· trtct's zero-tolerance policy. ln so doing, he displayed his own con- viction that the shenanigans of schoolyard thugs are not some- thing he tolerates. Now shallow thinking will grind gears trying to deciJlher why Cl/Proponent of toler6nce would befadvoc:ating such a poll· . Byron de Arokal - BETWEEN THE LINES cy of absolute intolerance. After all, adolescent ruffians have been prowling our playgrounds for generations, which is our lame rationalization for tolerfltin-9 them. But Ludmir is smarter than that. For in his sharp testimony before the trustees, he was draw- ing a subtle distinction between intolerance of what people do and tolerance of who people are. That's pretty deft and insight· ful discernment from one so young. Yet it is all the more remarkable in my book because the adults wielding the approvaJ power over Ludmir's Tolerance Day event apparently don't pos- . sess the same wisdom Ludmir says he was inspired to produce his Tolerance Day pro- ject after attending the "Walk In My Shoes" tolerance symposium sponsored by the Orange County Human Relations Commission and UC Irvine. "I found it inspiring," he recalls, "that they were able to get people of different culturaJ, ethnic, religious and sexual orien- tations to come together at one time and in one place. I wanted • to re-create that on our campus.• To fulfill his senior project requirement, Ludmir decided to orchestrate his' own tolerance ft;~ Mattress Outlet Store 3165 Harbor Blvd. Costa Mesa OM Bkxk South or •o5 rwy symposium. His vision was to assemble small groups of 50 stu- d ents who would attend six rotat- ing 'seminars featuring various guest speakers. After the series of lectures, the students would all assemble for a keynote address by a distinguished authority on tolerance and interpersonaJ rela- tions. ' Ludmit says his on ginaJ Toler- ance Day lineup was to include a seminar on homophobia led by a representative of People for Les- bifms di;\~ Gays. But the real headline-grabber was his original choi~'W" deliver the keynote ad*. Ludmir wanted T.J. Ley- dei.°' a former neo-Nazi skinhead who is now a member of the Simon WiesenthaJ Center's Task Force Against Hate. • While Ludrnir says Corona de! Mar High School administrators -and presumably the powers that be at district hec_tdquarters - had long since given him the go- ahead to produce his Tolerance Day symposium, he says they would not OK Leyden's proposed appearance or that of a gay and lesbian representative. Apparently. Ludmir was ask- ing for too much tolerance. Or perhaps not. Maybe Josh Lud.rnir's Tolerance Day might have actually promoted tolerance for who people are, even though we might be less tolerant -and even intolerant -of what they · do. At least Ludmir knows the dif- ference. • BYRON DE ARAKAL is a writer and communications consultant. After 28 years of serving his country, Mr. Dwan settled in Corona del Mar, where he spent the next 32 years serv- ing his community. "There's no one that had more int.egri· ty than Jack," said his widow, Jerri Dwan. "He was true to himself and oth· ers. He was always kind, tolerant and giving." Mr. Dwan proved his patriotism in the Army, se.{Ving at Pearl Harbor and for five consecutive years with the 3rd Infantry Division, including 10 cam- paigns in Africa and Europe, and four cunphibious D-Day landings. He also served in Washington, D.C., as a White House aide, a member of the government's delegation to the Geneva Conference ending the Korean arid Indochina wars, and to the Manila Conference. He also acted as a defense advisor to the U.S. Ambassador in Saigon. Newport Harbor High boys and girls volleyball coach Dan Glenn, who joins Corona del Mar High boys tennis coach Tim Mang as, perhaps, the foremost critics of the current CIF Southern Section playoff system, still has not given up hope of getting his obligatory ration of grease. Shot down before in his attempts to allow schools with smaller enrollments to seek the best Level of competition, 1.e. playing schools with the biggest enrollments in the upper divisions of the playoffs, Glenn's blackboard has spawned yet another potential solution. Glenn's proposed CIF Southern Section Boys Volleyball Champi- onships would nQt conflict with the current enrollment-based divisional systel'Tl. but merely act as a supplement First, he would shorten the current Southern Section division playoffs by one week, without eliminating any matches. Then, he would create a one-week tournament to crown a section champion, from a pool of top teams from any and all divisions. It's similar to a Masters format that exists in track and field and wrestling, where qualifiers from all section divisions compete for the right to represent the Southern Section ill state championships. Barry Faulkner PREPS Since there is no boys volleyball state championship, competition for one section tiUe (alJ divisions), would be the ftnal rung on the sport's competitive ladder. Glenn proposes the section tournament consist of the section's five division finalists (10 teams), who would be seeded, then aligned in a bracket, beginning the Monday alter the section title matches. On Monday, the No. 10 seed would play No 8 and No. 9 would play No. 7 for the right to advance. The 10-8 winner would then meet the No. I seed on Tuesday, when No. 2 would meet the 9· 7 winner, No. 4 would play No. 5 and No. 3. would batUe No. 6. The semifinals would be Thursday and the findls Saturday. The top five seeds would be given travel priority (home-court ddvantage) JUSt Like the current system used for th~ 9irls state voUeybaU playoffs. The one-week window would not extend the season, since the section playoffs wouJd be condensed into one ler.s week (opening with Tuesday wild-card matches, Wednesday first-round conte.'its and Friday second-round battles, rdther than the current format wluch plays first-round matches on Friday after four days off). Though it would require additional admimstrdtlon by the section office, it would pad section coUers by drawing the kind of crowds that don't exist when Corona del Mar plays at Brethren Christian in Its annual waltz to the Division N tiUe match. Mof>t important, according to Glenn. crowning one Southern Section champion would preserve ~ome or the sport's history, which tncluder. five major division titles for tiny Laguna Beach, not to mention C'dM's pair of 4-A crowns. Glenn, whose team played in the last two Division I title matches, but is sturk tn Division Ill this spring, plans to introduce the proposal as a non-dction item at the April 26 Southern Section Council meeting. It could be voted upon at the first council meeting next fall. For hLs part, Mang said recently that CIF octlcials are considering r hanges in the current tennis playoffs. But Southern Section Commissioner Jim Staunton, as well as more than one assistant commissioner, have satd there is no outcry for change In the current system. • Gordon McNeUl, the Corona del Mar High varsity boys basketball assistant who previously saJd he would have no lnterest in filling the coadpng job vacated when Paul Orris reSltgned Feb. 26, has changed his mind and will apply after all. ·1 talked about It with PauJ and he made me realize lhi.s could be on opportunity for me,• McNeill said. Mesa is Uni's equal • A 4-4 tie in eight-inning standoff ends - University's 15-game PCL win streak. Barry Faulkner DAILY PILOT CRVINE -The University High baseball jugger- naut proved unbeatable once again Tuesday, but vis- iting Costa Mesa managed the next best thing in a 4- 4 eight-inning tie that figures lo create a UWe intrigue in the Pacific Coast League baseball standings. The darkness-induced verdict, which will stand as a tie under league rules, ended a 15-game PCL win- ning streak for the two-time defending champion lTojans (4-3-1, 1--0-1 in league). Uni is now 23-2-2 agdinst league competition the last two-plus seasons. The other tie dunng that stretch was a 10-10 home deadlock against Mesa in 1999. "This was a game that was going to determine whether we were a pretender or a contender.• Cos- ta Mesa Coach Kirk Bauermeister said. "We looked like a pretender the first couple innings, but we set- tled down -and came back against a very good team. We came here expecting to win, but, alter getting behind, 4-1 , a tie isn't so hdd. The great thing about it is. if we get down later in league, we know we can come back.· It was the Tro1ans who were forced to rally first, alter M esa senior catcher Daniel Hunter doubled in Nick Cabico to open the scoring in the flrst. Uni seruor shortstop Kevin Conlin, the son of veterdn Trojan coach Chris Conlin, drove a solo homer to right-center field to even things. After Mike Armstrong put Mesa (6-1-1, 1-0-1) ahead again by scoring on a Josh Feldman groundout, the hosts took advantage of some lackluster defensive execution to score three times in the second. "We wen> a Little Oat early,• Bauermeister said. "Mayhe it was because the kids were so fired up to play Mater Dei (a 15-4 nonleague loss Monday).· After Aston Chaney singled with one out in the Uni second, he tried to advance to lh.ird on a single. Mesa left fielder Carlos Franco, however, gunned to third in tune to get Aston, only to see the ball dropped by the Mesa infielder, leavmg runners at the comers. A bunt smgle by N ick Gerakos then scored Chaney, but Mesa starter Jeremiah Haubrick got the first of his four strikeouts for what should have been the final out. Uni leadort man Matt Stone legged out a high chopper lo short Co load the bases and Conlin worked a walk to put the 1To1ans ahead, 3-2. Haubrick got defending Orange County batting champion Jay Nichols to hi.~ a sharp grounder right at a defender. A difficult, but makeable play turned into an infield b.it and an RBI when the ball was bobbled and Uni merely had to hold on. But, with Haubrick battling gamely into the fourth and Nick CabiCo providing 4113 innings of sterling relief, Mesa was able to rally. The payoff came in the filth when Hunter and Steven Shores were issued one-out walks. A groundout advanced them to second and third and Michael McGuire lashed two-run !>ingle to left. Costa Mesa stranded a man at third in the sev- enth and eighth. But, with Cabico fanning five, yielding only one hit, and delivering lively fastball, curvebaU and changeup ill a string of clutch sequences, Uni's vaunted offense could not hreak through. "Top lo bottom. we have a better hitting team than we did last year,• Chris Conlin said.
