W omen in glittering gowns
and men in finely tailored
suits glowed with an excite-
ment that rivaled the brilliance of a
theater marquee beckoning film
lovers from far and wide.
An endless stream of figwes
emerged from classic cars to scale a
stairway and warmly greet the
resurgence of the Newport Beach
Film Festival.
•J don't see any reason why New-
port Beach and this film festival can't
lake its place among the great film
festivals,· said Leigh ~teinberg,
who. with his wife, Lucy, sponsored
the festival. •And to have a film just
honored at the Oscars on Sunday is
really thrilling.•
In its fifth year, the festival lives
due to the determination of local
business leaders who resurrected the
event after the founder of the former
Newport Beach International Film
Festival, Jeffrey S. Conner, filed for
bankruptcy.
With a new team and an unbridled
energy, the festival was reborn with
more than 180 short fibns, 50 full.
length feature films and two days of
workshops. ·
The festival's executive director,
Gregg Schwenk, promised scores of

NEWPORT BEACH -A 49-year-
old Los Alamitos man was killed
Thursday afternoon after bis sport-util-
ity vehid~ crashed into a concrete pil-
lar on the Corona del Mar (73) Free-
way.
Police are still investigating the
cause of the accident that transformed
the black Jeep Grand Cherokee into a
twisted heap of metal and rubber.
"We don't know what the reasons for
the atW1 are right now," said Joanne
O'Hair, public information oftker for the
California Highway Patrol. •He could

Opponents of a proposed
hotel and resort at the bay-
side Newport Dunes recre-
ation park are rallying around
what they say is a little-
known but important fact
about the project: it lies on
public land.
Project opponents claim
many residents aren't aware
that the $100-million re~ort
would be built not on private
land, but on Orange County
property .
"There's so many people
saying 'let them build on their
land.' and it's so quiet that jt's
publJc land and has a public

leased the Dunes property
from the county since the ear-
ly 1970s.

Police are continuing their
invesllgabon into a small-
time drug operation allegedly
run by a high school teacher's
elide, although authorities are'
unsure how widespread the
activity was.
Carl Johnson, a 22-year-old
teacher's aide at Newport Har-
bor High School. was arrested
Tuesday on suspicion of sell-
ing marijuana to youths and
then recrwting at least one of
them as a dealer. When con-
tacted via pager on Thursday,
someone claiming to be John-
son's •spokesman" deferred
any questions to his attorney.

But there were many peo-
ple m the community who
were stunned to learn that
Johnson, who was highly
regarded by some of his col-
leagues, may have take n
advantage of his authority.
"This came as a total shock
to the students and the facul -
ty, • said Newport Harbor

had very few drug-related
problems at the school. so to
hear that a teacher's aide may
have been selling stuff to kids
is horrible.•
Johnson had been work-
mg at the lugh school part·
time, helping . students
enrolled in i.pecial education
classes. He Wd~ 't certlfied as
a teacher and was reqw.red to
undergo a criminal back-
ground check that didn't
reveal any pnor offenses.

day. He was stopped by school
oflioals and told to return

N ell Carter bad been suffering
all morning. The Broadway
actress. and star of the '80s
television show •GiJnme a Break"
was recovering from a case of jet
lag. She was trying to relax in bed,
but there were serious obstacles to
her plan.
"I've got the door open and the
windows open like an idiot because
I want the bedroom to smell fresh,•
Carter said. her voice a sneaky mix-
ture of little-girl innocence and 50-
grit sandpaper.
Carter's feet were cold. "But I'm
too lazy to get out of bed and get a
blanket, and l don't want to
unmake the bed and get under the
covers because it looks so pretty.·

Another per-
son might
have been
content simply
to flop on the
couch and
snooze. But
when Carter
does some-
thing, even if
it's lying in bed and feeling over-
whelmed by the world, she likes to
do it right.
The same enthusiastic approach,
not to mention her talent for gener-
ating drama Crom something as sim-
ple as an out-of-reach coffee cup.
has made her a performance power-
house. That should be evident
when she appears at the Orange
County Performing Arts Center
Thursday through April 9.
Carter has appeared in a long list
of plays and musicals, from •Ain't
Misbehavin'. • her first major suc-
cess, to more recent performances
such as "Bubbling Brown Sugar·
and •Annie.• In addition to her
television work, she bas acted in a
number of films. including the
upcoming feature "Special Deliv-
ery• and the recently released
"Faltin' D' Funk."

herself into her work, delivering a
professional product even if her
lines are made of lead or her tunes
sound like tin.
"I used to miss shows if my voice
wasn't good,• Carter said. •J'd rather
have you go get your money back
than have people go in and say, 'My
God. She was awful.' If you can't hit
the notes, you should cancel.•
The Dip side of Carter's approach
is that she's unapologetic about the
time she does spend on stage and
isn't particularly interested in pan-
dering to the audience.

For her show a t The Center, for
example, she says she plans to sing
•trungs that I like, and it just turns
out that you know them.•
During a recent performance on
an around-the-world cruise -the
same performance that produced
her jet lag -Carter encountered a
fan whose critical appraisal of her
work left something to be desired.
•There was a man on the ship
who sat through my whole show.
Then he said, in a voice that I could
hear, 'I would never hire her.'•
Carter's verdict on the curmud-
geon: ·vou just needed something
to bitch about. and I just happened
to be convenient.
"I gave my all,• she explained. • t
couldn't care less. I did the best I
could do.•
When she's not in the constrain-
ing ~nvironment of a cruise ship.
Carter will occasionally spice things
up with a foray into the audience.

Carter said audiences who come
to The Center should be prepared
for a little of this treatment if that's
what it takes to get them into the
proper mood.
·1 guarantee they'll have fun,•
she said. "If they don't have fun.

Who started this thing
anyway? Well, it was the
French, if you must know.

1 was considered the start of

Pope Gregory introduced the

The part the bulls really
like is when runners
inevitably start tripping over
each other, which creates a
giant traffic jam in.the chute.
At that point, the bulls quick-
ly catch up with the people
stuck at the back of the jam
and let them know bow
much they hate getting up
early for this nonsense.
·No, sir,· they said. Then
_ everyone cheered.
But, as al~ays happens,
_some people didn't get the
word, and continued to eel~
brate New Year's Day on April
1, wild parties and all Their
"" -neighbors ridiculed and taunt-
ed them, ~ding them on
wild goose chases or maki1'g
• up stories about tenible things
happening next door or in the
next village.
•April Fools!· the neigh-
bors called them, with all the
rudeness and contempt they
could muster. The descen-
dants of those neighbors, by
the way, are what we call
•waiters• in Paris today.
In more recent times,
French children go to great
lengths on April 1 to secretly
tape a paper fish onto their
friends' backs. When the vic-
tim discovers the trick, every-
one yells •pof.sson d'Avril!•
which means, •Poison
Advil." Just kidding. It
means •April Fish.· Get it?
One kid gets stuck with the
paper fish, everyone else
screams •Poisson d'Avrll/ •
I guess you have to be
there. ·
So much for origins. The
. question is, how did an
obscure French custom jump
. across the big pond to our
place? I hdve no idea.

I must say, some April
Fools' pranks are vefi clever,
if not ingenious. For the past
few years, ·Discover• maga-
zine, a science journal, has
• run a fa.1£, but very straight•
faced, story on or around
April 1. Last year's hoax was
about •Albert Manque, • a
French physicist.
Physicists spend a lot of
time thinking deep thoughts
about subatomic particles •
that might reveal the build-
ing blocks of the universe.
More than a few Nobel Prizes
have been awarded to
researchers who have discov-
ered unimaginably small par-
ticles, which always seem to
get odd names like "gluon·
or •muon.•
The problem is, they are
very bard to detect and can
only be captured for a few fnil-
lionths of a second. Supposect.
ly, Manque and his coll~gues
discovered an extraordinarily
fundamental particle.
Unlike gluon and muon,
which are infinitesimally t
small, the Manque particle
was about the size of a bowl-
ing ball. tn fact, it shattered a
nearby computer screen
when it burst out of the
device that captured it. Given
·that we're dealing with
pbysldsts here, the hoax did-
n't last long.
But holidays and "customs
are rarely bound by logic,
and occasionally, are just
plain nuts.

April Fools' primer. On bal-
ance, I guess we g'et off pret-
ty easy. A few practical jokes,
the obligatory news story
about some outrageous prank
somewhere -pretty harm-
less stuff.
Just smile and play along.
If you want to try something
different this year, try yelling
•Poison Advil" at people.

attempt to provtde their chil-
dren with safe access to a
new elementary school.
Newport Coast Elemen-•
tary School, which is sched-
uled lo open in the fall with
300 students, sits on the cor-
ner of Newport Coast Drive
-a six-lane highway willi a
speed limit or 55 mph -and
Park Ridge Road -a 40-mph
road with a steep incline. Par-
ents are hghtlng to have a
pedestrian bridge built near
the school, saying they are ter-
rified that a child crossing the
busy highway will be struck
by a speeding car.

were met with no more suc-
cess than those of past

agreed to bus all students liv-
ing on the west side or New-
port Coast Drive, but district
bffidals said they can take no
other action at this time.

the commuruty and parents
any way we can. That's why
we are taking a proactive
stance with buses because
that's the only th.mg within
our ability to do.•
Allho\lgh busing does ease
parents' minds, th ey feel the
footbndge will be necessary
because cluldren will still go to
the school dunng afternoons
and weel<ends, when they
can't be bused.

they were d.Jscouraged with
the responses from the
school district, county and

When the county's traffic
department conducted a
study months ago, they
reduced the speed limit on
Newport Coast Dnve from 60
to 55 mph and set a speed
IJ.mjt of 40 mph on the previ-
ously wunarked Park Ridge
Road -a small concession,
residents said at the time.
Residents fear a traffic
study conducted now will
not reflect the true nature of
the community when the
school opens.
With a commercial shop-
ping center being built
across Newport ~oast Drive,
a Marriott resort going up
nearby and Sage Hill High
School near completion, res-
idents said the commuruty is
only 40% complete.

de struck a concrete post sup-
porting an overpass, demolish-
ing the front portion of the
Jeep. Police believe the vehicle.
was traveling about 65 mph
when it bit the pillar. It was
badly $maged and came to
rest facing northbound under

The man was most likely
killed instantly, authorities said.

relaxed now than• I was earlier,"
Barry said after the meet. " The
meet certainly didn't start out the
way we would have wanted it."
What Barry was referring to was
the Sailors (3-0. 2-0 in league) mis-
handling a baton pass in the
400-meter relay and then watching
senior hW'dler/sprinter Trevor Jones
take a nasty tumble in the 110 high
hW'dles.
After scraping the s~nd hurdle,
Jones fought back to take the lead,
but tripped over the next-to-last
hurdle and was sent sprawling to
the ground.
"There was a lot of implications
riding on that spill,• Barry said.

took first and second in the 300
intermediate hurdles, giving New-
port the lead for good.
Dukes was also a double-winner,
taking first in the 1,600 (4:31.7) and
3:200 (10:06.0), while Peschelt took
the high jump (5-10) and placed
second in the 400 (52.8).
Tupy (16.0) and Moyer (16.6)
were second and third, respectively,
in the high hurdles, picking up the
slack for the fallen Jones.

After competing in the GllU TUCI
lap of luxury, the Newport Harbor High
girls track and field team battled Sea
View League foe Laguna Hills and its
powder-like track surface, taking care
of both of them, 81-54, Thursday.
·we've been a little spoiled the past
couple of weeks competing on the rub-
ber-surfaced tracks,• Coach Eric Tweit
said. "It shouldn't have been that big a
deal, because we have a dirt track at
Newport. Without the rain, the dirt gets
dry and it's tough to keep in great
shape."
Once accustomed to the elements,
the Sailors (3-0, 2-0 in league) took care
of business in nearly all facets of the
meet.
Seniors April Ross and Krista Dill
dominated the competition in the field
events, with Ross taking first in the long
jump (15-9), triple jump (35-43/.•) and
high jump (5-0) and Dill the shot put
(40-61/4) and discus throw (a personal-
best 133-4).
"They just continue to go out there
and get the job done,• Tweit said.
Tweit was also pleased with the effort
of sophomore Breonna Tiftany, whose
mark of 33-0112 in the triple jump was
her PR by a root and a half. ~be also
neared her top time in the 100-meter
low hurdles at 18.8.
"She just keeps getting better and
better with each meet,• Tweit said.
Junior Amber Steen showed some of
her tenacity in the 1,600. With a Laguna
Hills runner hot on her heels after three
laps, Steen turned on the jets and won
the event by nea rly four seconds
(5:34.6).
That was all as far as drama goes in
her races for the afternoon. She breeze4
through the 800, winning by just under
six seconds (2:23.2) before anchoring
the victorious 1,600 relay team (4:16.1).
Also showing some extra grit was
freshman Amy Burlingham. After being
nipped at the wire in the 100 (12.5 to
12.7), she stormed the 200. Her 26.1 was
nearly a full second better than the rest
of the pack.
"She's really learning with each meet
bow to compete at this level,• Tweit
said. • She's really figuring out what it
takes to win.•
Another freshman phenom, Valerie
Day, was a double-winner tn the hur-
dles events. She neared her PR time in
the 100 low hurdles (17.4) before best-
ing her top time ln the 300 lows (51.3).
"Here's another kid that's really
improving day by day,· Tweit said. "He
had a couple of great times for us in the
hurdles.•
In the 3,200, junior Sonya Mechkor
led for most of the race and took the top
spot with a 12:12.0.
Usa Gerlach's mark of 99-1 in the
discus was good enough for second
place and was also a near personal-best
throw for the senior.
•Overall, I was really pleased with
our effort out there,• Tweit said. •1 think
we accomplished what set out to do and
we're ready lo go for next week."
