incarnate. Kids invaded a beach that
had earlier beheld only birds and
morning walkers as the day imitated
a June afternoon.
Far away, where ocean became
indiscernible from sky, the sun
shone.
And right under their feet, on a
platform that was closer to the water
than these tourists were used to, the
planks on the pier seemed to never

The two members of the.Newport
Beach Premiere Cinema Guild had
freed up their afternoon -Leslie is a
real estate broker, Davis designs
wetsuits for women -to make sure
the visiting filmmakers got to know
the city outside of Fashion Island's
Marriott Hotel. One group of filmmakers and
local hosts took it easy Friday after-
noon. They could've hit the shopping
scene, the amusement parks, maybe
even Hollywood, but stars of the
Hawaiian film "Ka'ililauokekoa"
instead walked the Newport Pier on
"The piers in Hawaii, they're not
this long." said Noelani Iokepa, who
starred in "Ka'ililauokekoa." "And
there's no place in Hawaii where you
Iokepa, her co-star and boyfriend
Kapono Guerrero, director of the film
Kala'i Ontai, and his wife Kau'i Ontai
-who also appeared in the film -
It was part of the festival's "host a
filmmaker# project, which teams
local volunteers up with directors,
actors, writers, producers, etc., to
show them around town. The project
is in its first year.

one at Whittier Ele mentary.
Hit's a major piece for lan-
guage proficiency and for ear-
ly intervention,• said Julie
McCormick, principal at
Pomona Elementary School,
one of the two schools hoping
to get a preschool on their

The Newport-Mesa Unified
School Board granted program
coordina tors permission last
Tuesday to apply for a major
expansion grant, which will be
handed out June· JO.
Administrators have
applied for funding from the
state to open two satellite
preschools, each with 48 chil-
dren, at Wilson and Pomona
elementary schools and a third
at the Harper school site with
144 children.

the festival on SWlday. but other than
the screening and a harbor cruise
scheduled for today, the guests were
free to do as they pleased.
The piece, about a girl whose
father gives her away to a§erful
chief, is one of the festival's ost 60
featured full-length films. It orig-
inally made for children as part the
Hawaiian school system's video cur-
riculum, the actors said. But now that
the title has grabbed the attention of
American filmmakers, the cast and
crew want to send out a message.
"That Hawaiians are real people,•
Guerrero said. "There's a lot more
than Waikiki."

SANTA ANA HEIGHTS -
On Friday, a single, dark
brown armchair still looked a
little lost in the otherwise emp-
ty trailer at the comer of Zenith
Avenue and Orchid Street.
But by this week -today at
best and Friday at the latest -
the box-like building will be
furnished and up and running
as Newport Beach's newest fire
station. .
After a county fire station in
the airport area caught fire last
December and went out of ser-
vice, city officials decided to
jump in and take over the job.
As a result, Newport Beach's
firefighters have responded to
calls from two rooms at the
Radisson hotel for the past two
months and have used down
times to get to know Santa Ana
Heights -an unincorporated
area the city is expected to
annex by early 2002.
The new station will be only
temporary. City officials have
leased the land from the coun·
ty for two years at $1 a year.
For the past few weeks, city
crews have graded the lot that
was covered with weed and
slapped on a foot-thick asphalt
layer to handle the 40,000-
pound engine. A permanent
fire station will be built later,
once the neighborhood
becomes part of Newport
Beach.
While the hotel folks had
been great to the city's fire·
fighters, Capt. Paul Matheis
said he was looking forward to
checkout time.

Captain Jim Reed said the fish were still
hiding.
"It's pre tty slow -we JUSl caught
• about 15 sculpms and eight rockfish."
said Reed, who skippe rs one of Newport
Landing's ships and ldkes people out on
the ocean to fish. ·But it shouJd start
picking up real quick."
Reed's own love affair with fishing
began at age 3, when his fother took
him along to freshwater lakes and
streams in his nallve Pennsylvania.
Some two decades late r, he crossed
the country and settled in Orange
County, where he'd go fishing as often
as possible.
"I'd go out every chance I got,• he said,
addJng that he worked his way from deck
hand lo licensed captain over the years.

In the early 1990s, Reed left town and
moved south to San Diego, where he
signed on for long-hauJ fishing trips
Lasting between five and 18 days.
It .was a bit like the Life portrayed in
the movie "The Perfect Storm,• Reed
said, adding that the folks in HoUywood
had done a pretty good job.
"A lot of it was realistic,• he said,
"although the waves looked a little big-
ger for the moVie. U you have a 100-foot
wave and a 100-fool boat, you wouldn't
see that boat climbing up the face of the
wave like that.·
But while Reed said he liked the long
stints out at sea, he decided to return to
a day job about a year ago.
His wife, Vickie, had complained a
little and wanted to see more of h er hus-
band. And then there's also tbe couple's
3-year-old son, Evan. ·
"I want to be home at night,• Reed
said.
While the fish might be smaller now,
there's still lots of excitement on his
boat.
"For people who have never fished
before -to them, a 3-pound fish is as
exciting as a 200-pound fish on long
range trips,• Reed said.
Right now, he takes his clients to
Catalina Island. Once fishing picks up
along the coast, he'll cruise the HPalriot"
as far north as Long Beach and down to
San Onofre.
And later this summer, when the fish
bite better, he'll probably bring Evan
along on one of his trips.

University program hoping citiz ens will promote c,hange
I f those of you living on the
Westside of Costa Mesa
haven't heard of UC Irvine
professor Kristen Day, you
probably will soon.
Even if you don't, you
probably should. Because
amid the name calling and
divisiveness that has stirred
the Westside debate so far,
she has been quietly studying
ways to shape the future of
this embattled side of town.
As I said in this space a
week ago,-there are some
. who wish to blame the ills of
the Westside on one group.
But it's always easier to point
fingers and blame others than
to roll up your sleeves and fix
the problems.
Then, last week, I met Day
and learned her eftorts have
the potential to make positive
changes in the area's political
landscape, a landscape that,
according to the latest census
figures, is being deluged
with myriad cultures and eth-
nicities.
Day, an associate profes-
sor in UCl's department of
urban and regional planning,
is creating a connection
between the university and
the Westside.
Dubbed the Community
Outreach Partnership Center,
the initiative Is designed to
bring university and commu-
nity leaders to the table to
come up with ideas and solu-
tions to oime, safety, educa-
tional and cultural problems,
and on how to fix the racial
and cultural tensions between
Latinos and whites.
U this all sounds land of
pie-in-the-sky, you're right, 1t
does. Just how much can a
university program do to bx
such heady problems?
I must ad.nut I'm a bttle
skeptical.

Hoag Hospital's heart
institute has set llp a voucher
program to help bring auto-
mated external defibrillators
to Orange County.
The portable machines,
which are easy to use, dra-
matically increase the
chance of survival during
cardiac arrest, a condition
that currently kills about
220,000 Americans every
year. Studies indicate that
using the machine increases
the chance of survival from
5% to as much as 45%. TI.me
is critical following cardiac
arrest as the chance of sur-
vival drops 10% with each
minute that passes without
defibrillation and virtually no
one survives after 10 min-
utes.
The program will make
200 vouchers available to
local organizations inte rest-
ed in obtaining the machine.
The defibrillators are
desigried for use by people
with no medical experience

one of the partners. We can
be a neutral party."
Day began her relatio~hip
with the Westside back in the
fall of 1999, when she met
local restaurateur Maria Elena
Avila at UCI.
Avila had learned of the
university's urban planning
department and was seeking
answers to some of the prob-
lems that she knew were
tearing at the Westside's very
fabric.
"It was a perfect match,·
Day says. ·1 was looking for a
project and she was looking
for someone to help. That's
how I got hooked.· So Day
added a special focus to the
graduate course that she
teaches on urban design and
behavior -the Westside.
Her students now study the
Westside as a project They've
assessed whether there is ade-
quate recreational needs and
park areas on the Westside
and they've studied other com-
munities with similar issues
and even made suggestions on
after minimal training. The
vouchers give a $1 ,000 dis-
count on the machines,
which normally sell for
$3,500. The institute will also
assist organizations with a
site assessment and training
for staff members.

needs volunteers
Both individuals and
groups or volunteers are
needed immediately for a
variety of positions with the
Susan G. Kome n Breast Can-
cer Foundation and its 10th
Anniversary Komen Orange
County Race for the Cure.
The race takes place on
Sunday, Sept. 23, at Fashion
Island in Newport Beach.
More than 30,000 partici-
pants are eJQ>ected, and more
than 1,400 volunteers are
needed.
The race raises funds for
national breast cancer
research and Komen breast
health programs in Orange
County. Last year, the race

Day emphasizes that no
outreach program can be suc-
cessful uniess the community
members embrace the con-
cept and take leadership
roles.
"The university can be
involved but community
members need to rise up and
work together: she said.
Day also notes it would
also be wrong to equate this
outreach program as one sole-
ly centered on the Westside's
Latino community.
Likewise, she's aware that
not all the factions on the
Westside are eager to come to
the table.

After serving in the U.S. Air
Force, Packer accepted his first
coaching position at Puente High
in 1958 as the B football coach.
To this day, Packer's coaching
highlight will always be winning
the B championship that first
season, because it was Puente's
first football title at any level in
the 43-year history of the school
al that time. It became La Puente
High in the early '60s.
After four years at Puente,
Packer helped open
Nogales High (Puente)
in 1962, serving as
athletic director and
head football coach.

football coach Tom French in
1974. French led the Mustangs
to two South Coast League titles.

Mesa High,• Packe r said.
•People have asked me a
number of times, in a career as
varied as mine, what I would say
I'm most proud of. And what I'm
most proud of is my time at
Costa Mesa High. When I came
to Costa Mesa in 1973, those
were some very troubled times
for the school. It had four
principals in five years. It was
not a happy place.
"But I can honestly say eight
years later when I left, and it
wasn't me but everyone else
around me, that it was the best
high school in the d.isbict and the
kids were proud of that school ...
There have been a lot of high-
lights, but without any
equivocation, those years at
Costa Mesa were the most
satisfying, most gratifying in
almost 40 years in public
education. And I've told that to a
lot of folks.·
Packer, who earned his
master's degree at Cal State Los
Angeles and Ph.D. at USIU in La
Jolla, retired as a school district
superintendent in January 1993.
Al the same time, Packer
concluded a six-year tenn with
the C IF State, serving two years
each as president-elect,
president and senior citizen
president (to assist the current
one).
The roles as president of the
CIF Southern Section and CIF
Stale executive committees are
voluntary.
Packer, who still plays golf
with some of his fonner CIP
State officeJS, lives in Palm
Springs in the winter and enjoys
a summer home on Whidbey
Island, Wosb., the largest island
in the continental U.S., with his
wife of 47 years, Dorothy. They
have three grown sons and six
grandchildren (two from each
son).
