The Newport Dunes pro-
ject, a proposed resort hotel
that has divided the city for
months, may finally pass its
first major hurdle at Thurs-
day's Planning C9mmission
meeting.
The proposal. which
includes a four-story, 470-
room hotel and a 31,000-
square-foot conference
center to be built on the
site of the Newport Dunes
recreational vehicle
resort, bas been modified
based on Planning Com-
mission criticism of an ear-
lier, laiger plan.
The panel could-approve
the plan and send it on to
the City Council, delay it
again or reject it. .

found the fountain of youth, a place
she can visit on a daily basis and
walk away feeling happier and
younger than when she walked ln.
Ice's fountain actually bas several
locations throughout the county, but
its source lies just off Harbor ~oule
vard in the Fairview Development
Center in Costa Mesa.
For the past five years, Ice has
spent four hours every weekday

request for a rehearing.
The attorney for Al Morel-
li -who owns two homes on
Shamrock Lane that border
the Harbor Boulevard site -
said the fight will now move'
from City Hall to the court-
room.
"It seems to me the city
has a problem understanding
the due process of law,• said
Morelli's attorney, Simone
Wong-Easum, on Tuesday.
• "The city council should be
protecting this, not trampling
it under foot.·

service. As the worship progresses, a series of candles is
extinguished as we reca.U the Passion account, symboliz.ing
the increasing darkness as Jesus faces his death on chc cross.
The Tenebrae riruaJ was
developed in the Middle Ages in C hristian monas~

mcditarion on the death of Jesus.

Christ's victory is that we can live in new ways here and now

Y ou can take the man out of basketball,
but you can't take basketball out of the
man. As a player, coach and even ·
spectator, Orange Coast College men's tennis
coach Tandy Gillis still can't get enough of the
game.
"It's my We,• Gillis sald. "Even after I retire,
1 still would love to be involved in the game as
a coach in some capacity.•
Locally, Gillis first helped Corona del Mar

including Irvine League
titles m 1970, '72 and '73
before moving on to OCC
and guiding the Pirates to
the 1978-79 state
championship.
"I'm a pretty
old-fashioned kind of
coach,• Gillis said. ·1

Gillis had one of the
better people in the game's history to leam from
at the University of California in the name of
Pete Newell.
Gillts was on Newell's 1959 national
cnampionship team at Cal and started on the
1960 team that reached the championship
game. 1 •Pete was a tremendous influence on my
life,• Gillis said. ·1 couldn't have played for a
better coach than Pete Newell. We all called
him by his first name and the players would
have died for him. How many coaches back in
the late 'SOs and early '60s would let you call
them by their first namew-.Jot many.•
. Following his playing career at Cal, Gillis
became a coach at Cathedral High in Los
Angeles before spending some time in France
as a coach.
Two years later, Gillis resurfaced in Southern
California where CdM Coach Bill Bloom hired
Gillis to coach the junior varsity.
·Nobody beard from me in years,• Gillis said.
"They all thought I was a drug addict or
something. They didn't know J was coaching in
Europe. I had played against Bloom when he
was at USC, so when I came back. he hired me
onto~ staff.•
In 1967, Gillis took over for Bloom and was
the vanity coach for the next eight seasons,
coaching such standouts u Matt Keough, Casey
Jones and Jeff Wharton, among others.
