N icbolas Payton was not
raised with a proverbial
golden spoon, but rather a
small brass trumpet be received at
age 4. And this future musician bad
a few other things going for him,
such as being born and nurtured in
~ New Orleans by his mother, a classi-
cal pianist and opera singer, and his
father, noted jazz bassist Walter
Payton.
It also didn't hurt to be surrounded
by his parents' massive collections of
recordings along

Payton, who has been compared to
Armstrong both in style and physical
appearance, says his career has been
affected by the late trumpeter.
·My experiences are diffe rent, and
I have my own idea of what I want to
do musically, but he was a genius and
I have been greatly influenced by his
work," Payton said. "ln fact, I don't
think he has been given enough
credit. I believe he is the father of
jazz music as we know it today. He
was also a primary influence in shap-
ing what we know as American
music -from Duke Ellington to
Frank Sinatra.•

concerts, previews, educational
events and a free symposium with
American composer Lukas Foss
from Tuesday through April 30.
The composer's Piano Concerto
No. 1 and No. 2 will be performed
by the symphony at 8 p.m.
Wednesday and Thursday at the
Orange County Pelforming Arts
Center. Poss will appear at the
preview talk at 7 p.m.

Payton, who

to the trumpet
because of its
regal quality,
can't exactly
remember why,
as a 4-year-old,
be asked for
one.
"I was too
young to
remember, but
you know New
Orleans is a
trumpeter's
town,• said Pay-
ton, 26. At age
8, he started
performing with
his father's
group, the
Young 'Tu.xedo
Band. However,
his first steady
gig was with a
group of other
12-year-olds in a
group called the
All-Star-Jazz
Band.
The boys per-Nicholas Payton
formed in New
Orleans and at jazz festivals in
Europe. He later enrolled at the New
Orleans Center for Creative Arts,
then studied with Ellis Marsalis
(father of Wynton and Branford) at
the University of New Orleans. He
would go on to record with respected
jazz musicians such as Joe Hender-
son, Clark Terry and Jimmy Smith. ln
1996, he portrayed Oran "l;iot Lips"
Page in Robert Altrnan's "Kansas
City,• which spawned two companion
soundtrack albums.
·1 had a lot of help from my par-
ents and from local musicians and
from people abroad," Payton said.
·Also, I was very aggressive in seek-
ing information. I have always tried to
go out and listen to musicians, intro-
duce myseU and sit in if I could. I am
very hungry and want to do whatever
it takes to learn.
"ln some respects I am shy, but
never too bashful or too proud to say I
don't know something. I think older
musicians were happy to see some-
one asking those kind of questions,
and I think they were encouraged to
help me along."
But perhaps his most memorable
relationship was with esteemed trum-
peter Doc Cheatham, with whom he
recorded •Doc Cheatham & Nicholas
Payton• in 1997. Cheatham was 91
when they recorded the album, 68
years Payton's senior. The album
would earn P~yton a Grammy in the
Best Solo Jazz Performance category
for •Stardust.• It would also be the
last performance for Cheatham, who
died shortly after.
•1 don't think I could put into
words what I learned from being
around Doc," Payton said. ·1 think
what was most impr;essive was the
amount of hunger and passion he bad
for what be did. He was never embit-
tered, and be was always willing to
give people a part of him if they
wanted to listen. Every time he
touched his horn, it was sheer beauty.
He was a true lesson about staying
true to your beliefs and keeping the
passion for whatever you do.•
Along with Payton and bis dad,
the group includes guitarist Steve
Blaylock, pianist David Boedding-'
haus, vocalist Topsi Chapman, clar-
inetist Orange Kellin, trombonist
Freddie Lonzo and drummer Adonis
Rose. The performance will take r
place in the intimate setting of the
Jazz Club at Founders Hall.

ion. Good Friday commemo-
rates the day that Christ died

was resurrected on Easter
Sunday.
However, while Easter lS
celebrated as a religious holi-
day, many of the tradltions
surrounding It are pagan in
origin. For example, the name
Easter in many circles is
thought to be de rived from
the Scandinavian ·ostra"
and the Teutonic "Ostem· or
"Eastre • -both goddesses of
mythology signifying spring
and fertility. The symbols of
Easter -rabbits and eggs -
also reflect this theme .
Regardless of the reli91ous
significance. the holiday has
become a nationwide cele-
bration, with candy stores (ill.
ing their windows with
chocolate bunnies and gro-
cery stores oflerlng egg-color-
ing kits.
The Easter Bunny will

end at the Newport Dunes
and the Hyatt Newporter.

a study released Thursday by
an envirorunental group.
The study. prepared by the
Southern California Coastal
'vVater Research Project,
details the findings of volun-
teers who cleaned up sites on
Orange County beaches.
including ones in Newport
Beach, betw~ August and
September 1998.

12 tons of debris -more than
46 million items -during the
test period.

The level of garbage was
50 times higher than what
was recorded during a 1998
cleanup in Orange County for
California Coastal Cleanup
Day. according to the report.
Debris often washes ash ore near 30th Street and other spots on the Newport Beach coasL
Moreover, the study found,
much of the garbage on ithe
beaches is in the form of small,
plastic pellets, a type oC d,ebris
that has so far been mostly
overlooked in cleanups.
The group collected mofe
than 105 million pellets during
the test period.
The small objects appear to /
be the raw matenals used in
manufdcturing plastic prod-
ucts. said Sbelly Moore, a
marine biologist working on
the project.
·Basically, they come in a
variety of s12es and shapes.

An electrical fire at First Lutheran Church of Venice meant
worshipping in a parish haJJ for the past '80 Sundays. This
Easter, the resurrected sanctuary will reopen its doors.
"It's a beautiful new space," said Pastor Kenneth Frese.
"But to me, the most awe·inspiring thing is die spirit of
renewal that has taken place here in the interim. Naugahyde
~airs and fluorescent lights didn't seem to keep any of us
from feeling God's goodness and gacc. Or from
communicating it to all the visitors who, despite the
scaffolding and the internal obstacles dw tend to keep
people from churches, found themselves drawn to us."

A five-run seventh inning. All those
factors brought about a sunny dispo-
sition in Orange Coast College 's
softball team on Thursday.

softball game, Golden West (13-23,
5-14 in conference) was headed for a
season sweep of OCC (17-23, 6-13)

Before men walked on the moon,
Fred Hokanson was a part of e Orange Coast College
athletics, both as an alhJete and as
a coach.
Thjrty-plus years later,
Hokanson stlJI feels pretty happy to
l>e a part of the Pirate tradition.
"I'm very fortunate to be able to do what I
do,· Hokanson said. "With the exception of
running your own business. I have the best job
in town.·
Hokanson played football and track at
Huntington Beach High for three years before
being switched to Westminster High for his
senior year. "The distnct split after my junior
year and some of us ended up at Westminster,•
Hokanson said. "I've always wondered just how
good the football and track
teams would have been if we
all stayed together my senior
year.·
Prom there, Hokanson went
to Orange Coast and played '
football and competed in all
throwing events, before
transferring to UC Santa
Barbara.
"My football career came to
Fred Hokanson dn end due to a back injury, but I still competed in track,•
Hokanson said. "I competed in
the discus, shot put, javelin and hammer throw.•
In the hammer throw, Hokanson earned two
medals in the NCAA Sectionals, placing fourth
and fifth dunng lus collegiate career.
Art~r working as a coach at Westminster High
following college, Hokanson landed a job at
OCC m 1969. "They were looking for a track
and field coach and I jumped at the
opportunjty, • Hokanson said.
Coaching was not necessarily on the top of
Hokanson's list of employment endeavors.
"I always thought I was going to work in the
science field in some capacity,• he said. "When
I was at UCSB, my friends were all going into
coaching. It just happened to turn out that way
for me, too."
OCC scored once in the first,
when Kristin Degree came home on
a delayed steal play. The freshman
stole second base earlier to give her

laughter that roars out of a
ports newsroom when
comedy is in high gear.
Yesteryear papers around the
county all had their share of
hilarity among young and old.
One county sports writer
named TQmmy Enomoto, who was
well-liked by all, chose to grab bis
big camera on the field and beat
the crowd out of the huge parking
lot one night. nus, be figured, ·
would give him fair time to make
the t 1 p.m. deadline.
His photograph was perfect and
right on time. His story, which he
wrote in 30 minutes, was also
good. Only trouble was that the
score was wrong. He had left the
game before a breakaway runner
changed the score in the fina1
minute.
People framed the morning
sports page and Enomoto chose
not to leave a game early after
that sizzler, learning that anything
can happen at
any time.
It was
remindful of the
picture someone
took in '48 of
President-elect
Harry Truman
holding a
Chicago Tribune
which claimed
that Republican
candidate Tom
Dewey beat him
for the big title.

SIDELINES
Another fellow who brought
' great amusement after one prep
football game on a Friday night
back in the '6,0s was Bill Farr, who
went on to draw press attention as
a reporter for the Los Angeles
1imes in a contempt of court case.
Farr had an intellectual side
and sometimes wrote at great
length and would lose track of
time.
Unfortunately, he was a loser
one night when it got past 11 p.m.
It was amusing then since no one
phoned a field Teletype office to
tell him to stop writing. Hence, the
staff left tbe story running and it
never got in the press room.
Some staffers laughed and told
Farr the length was wonderful,
that is, for the next evening.
The positive thing is that Parr
always knew how to go aJong with
the humor.
Another Friday night In the fall
of 1955 found the late Dally Pilot
Editor Tom Keevil and reporter BW
Williams offering to take their big
4x5 cameras out to capture photos
of the Orange Coast College
football team in its new stadium.
Keevil said both were delighted
· to conduct this project for the Pilot
sports section.
The sports editor was
considerably dismayed later that
night when the pair returned with
no prints worth saving and
seemed more enthused about
heading across the street for a
beer.
Interesting to note that the late
Register Sports Editor Eddie
West was a one-time solid end for
Stanford and looked forward to
his writing career in the late '20s.
One of his first job$, since there
was no TV in those days, was
stepping outside the old
downtown office of the Register
and putting numbers into the
woodblock innings above the
building ledge. All could read the
baseball score that way from the
street.

four-game tournament, hoping to make it a sweep.

The Pirates pounded out
25 runs in two victories Thurs-
day at the College of the
Sequoias Tournament.
They remaih unbeaten in
the tournament and close it
out today against the College
of the Sequoias.
In Thursday's first game,
OCC (15-20) scored six times
in the fowth inning en route
to an 11-5 victory over Reed-
ley. OCC Catcher Brian Mur-
phy led off the inning with a
home run. Nick Orlandos and
,Corona del Mar High product
Eric Wiethorn then hit big
OCC doubles. The Pirates
sent 10 batters to the plate in
the fourth.
Ryan France went 4 for 5
with a home run for OCC, but
every Pirate who played had
a hit and scored a run. Fresh-
man pitcher Sam Greco
picked up the win for the
Pirates.
The runs Cdmed over into
OCC's second game, where it
hammered .San Diego City,
14-1, in a mercy-rule decision.
The Pirates had 21 hits in five
inrungs.
Blair Havens was pe rfect
at the plate for OCC, going 4
for 4 with three RBis. His
teammate, Chris Laws, also
collected four hits in six trips
to the plate. OCC catcher
Willie Keller had three dou-
bles and the Pllates' Willie
Claytor went 3 for 5. Another
OCC freshman pitcher, John
Surdock, scattered seven hits
in four mn.ings. four of them
doubles, for the win.
