Deepa Bharath DAILY PILOT CORONA DEL MAR -It took 20 firefighters about half an hour to put out a fire that caused at least $180,000 in damages Monday morning to a home in the 3800 block of Ocean Birch Drive. Nobody was hurt in the bldze, which officials said originated in the garage or laundry room of the one- slory four-bedroom house south of Spyglass Hill Road off of San Joaquin Hills Road. Stephanie Thais, 34, of Laguna Beach was the sole occupant of the house at the time of the fire. Thais, who was visiting her parents over the weekend, said she was awakened by loud hre alarms and the smell of smoke around 11:20 a.m. She said she then got up and rushed to the laundry room, where she saw smoke corning out of the dryer. She immediately turned off all electrical appliances and ran out of the house through a side door. According to officials, the garage. a parked car and the laundry room were destroyed, and four adJoirung bedrooms suffered major structural damage. This was before we knew about surfboards or bodyboards. Bodysurfing was the sport, and there were two main places we went -Long Beach and Balboa. Specifically, the Bal- boa pier. Surfers are notorious for infla, ting" the size of w~ves, but\ve had a foolproof sys- tem of measurement. When you were on a big wave and you looked to your right at the pier, if you saw Wdter Robert Gardner THE VERDICT running down the face of the pier you knew you w ere on a 20-foot wave because the Balboa pier was a 20· foot pier. One day I was riding a big wave and looked to my nghl to sec 1f I had a 20-foot wave Of JUSl a puny 18-foot- er. Kent I litchcock, a local manne photographer, was silting on the railing of the pier as I went by, and ham that l elm, J gnnned into his camera as he took a shot of me. When developed, he put that picture in'tbe win- dow of his shop in the Bal- boa Inn building where it remained for years with the caption: ~Bob Gardner iid- ing a 20-foot wave al the Bdlboa pier.• Far be at from me to to . Let the truth stand in th~ way of a good story -par- ticularly one that has me on such a huge wave. Howev- er, while that was a big wave, it's doubtful that it was really 20 feet because there was a flaw in our fool- proof measurement system : The Balboa pier didn't rise 20 feet out of the ocean. l presume the 20-foot pier concept grew from the fact that the pilings were 20 feet long. However, when built into a pier, a lot of that 20 feet was buried in the sand. Both of those prune bodysurfi.ng spots are gone now The Long Beach surf disappeared when they built the breakwater, and Balboa was destroyed when au the sand from the big dredge was dumped on the beach, changing the bot- tom. I hear there is a move- ment in Long Beach to sink the breakwater and bring back the surf. Anybody interested in a Little sand removal at the pier? • ROBERT GARONER is a Corona del Mar resident and a former Judge His column runs Tuesdays. On March 25, your editor· idl'S headline stated , "Lexus Stopped At Greenligfit in Ne wport Beach ." What fol- lowed was a slanted and at limes petula nt e&torial predicated upon the belief that but for Greenlig ht, there would be a Lexus dealership in Ne wport Beach. This editorial was preced- ed i;t fe w days ea rlier by another frotat page article with the same the me. A closer reading of that article, however, revealed a quote attributed to David Wilson indicating that be had not found any land in Newport Beach suitable for a Lexus dealership in the first place. What followed were Wil- son's general views on Greenlight with absolutely no re fe rence to a sped.fie site that he had considered for a dealership. These two pieces accord- ed such high priority in your paper during the last several days and leave the clear impression that Wilson selected a s1te for his dealer· shJp, considered the applica- tion proce11, including the Greenllght requir&mentt and then elected to abandon that project. If that 11 true, bow about tt'!Ulng u1 where tbe lite wu. If It l• not true, then wby writ• art.id .. and tbe editorl· als in the manner they were written? Wilson 1s a fine automo- bile dealer. He merely pointed out that he was not the size of the Irvine Co. The Daily Pilot failed dur· ing the election process to sense the true feeling of the' community about growth · and congestion.
