Expanding their campaign for an
airport at El Toro into cyberspace,
members of the Airport Working
Group recently launched an ooline
war room to counter. anti-El Toro
Internet outlets that have been up
and running for quite a while.
"We just got tired of pro-airport
El Toro forces not having a Web
site," said Dave Ellis, a spokesman.

"We constantly have people say
in the community, "Where is your
Web site? r want to volunteer and
need more information,·• Ellis said.

an El Toro airport and can submit
invoices for further expenses, the

Behind the cross, the waves tumbled and crashed.
Overhead, the sea gulls screeched. And in front,
hundreds of people perched in lawn chairs and sitting
on bright blankets listened to an Easter sunrise service
by Christ Church By The Sea United Methodist in
Newport Beach.

About 300 people braved the chilly, foggy weather
for the 11th annual 6:30 a.m. sunrise service on the
sand at 14th Street. The Rev. George R. Crisp said each
year, the service continues to grow, but the message
always stays the same -it only gets updated wtth the
times. He also said there are always poem readings and
songs by the Chancel Choir. nus year, Crlsp's sermon focused on women as role
models, using movies like "Charlie's Angels" and the
heroine Laura Croft from the video game "Tomb
Raider" as examples.

'80s, there was a concern," said former
mayor Joe Erickson. "It was prior to my
term on council. In my opinion, (they
arej federal tax dollars that citizens of
Costa Mesa pay JUSI like everybody else
and 1t would be a shame iJ that money
went to other conununities. •
The allocation of Community Devel-
opment Block Grant money to chanties

and that normally does not attract a big
crowd.

ic again in the last year.

corporations and not from federal
funds,· he said. "Taxpayers should not
be forced to give money unless they
explicitly say which charity they want to
donate to. By contributing federal mon-
ey, taxpayers are donating whether they
want to or not and have no say in who
gets the donations. l am definitely
against this.·

enough to be comfortable on the boat and

Avery, who said he spends about 60
days sailing each year, will join the boat
for the Tahiti to Easter Islands leg later this
year and then again on the Antarctica leg
in 2002.
While he's not spending as much time
out at sea as he used to, he said he's struck
a "very nice balance" between administer-
ing the $1 million a year program and fol-
lowing his passion.

T he year is 1969, when I was a Daily
Pilot paperboy peddling my Schwinn
three-speed down Tustin Avenue
heading to the Arches Restaurant, which
was the first stop of my paper route. I ped-
dled along Coast Highway from the Arches
bridge to the Ruben E. Lee Bridge that was
my daily route except on Sundays.
In those days. Coast Highway had a few
painted crosswalks away from the traffic
signals where drivers would actually stop
to let me cross.
How things have changed. Gone are
Rosan's factory, Haskell's dlve shop a'nd two
trailer courts.
Flash forw,ard to the preseJilt. where I
find myself as the' Harbor Coh.un.nist for the
same paper I delivered more than 30 years
ago. In those 30 years, I have been on the
boating forefront and a boater in Newport
Harbor and along the Pacific Coast.
Some of you may remember me as the
host of the Boathouse TV Show that aired
on local cable and now airs nationally on
the Suns~e Network (FOX Sports Net).
In the past 20 years, I have taught sail-
ing in the harbor, skippered private yachts
and charter bOats, and helped with many
local events such as Clean Harbor Day.
I am the Marine Committee chair for the
Newport Harbor Area Chamber of Com-
merce, a member of Newport Beach's Har-
bor Committee, on the Boy Scout Sea Base's
Executive Committee and I bold a master's
license from the United States Coast Guard.
Now, I have the exciting opportunity to
write a weekly column with harbor and
boating topics from my perspective as an
active boater. I will bring to you what is
happening in the harbor from special
events to water quality to specific harbor
issues like dredging and eel grass control.
Plus, I will share with you some high-
lights of my recent voyages, like my recent
trip from Honolulu to Long Beach as the
delivery captain aboard the 145-foot Rap-
ture, where we encountered 15-foot seas.

ing at the state and national level that
affects this harbor.
Right now, we have good news from
Sacramento as Gov. Davis has appointed
Raynor Tsuneyoshl as the new director of
the California Department of Boating and
Waterways, replacing Carlton Moore who
has been the interim director since 1998.
Tuuneyosbi, 58, of Huntington Beach, is
knowledgeable about marine and boating
issues with his 25-plus years of experience.
He was the coWlSel to the commissioner of the
United States Maritime Commission, presi-
dent of Harbor and Coastal Services Unlimit-
ed. and served in the U.S. Coast Guard
Reserve. just to mention a little of bis past.
Great news for Newport Harbor to have
a hands-on director who lives in our neigh-
boring city, so hopefully he will have an
understanding of our harbor and how boat-
ing and waterways can play a vital role in
this harbor's future. ·

my not so stellar high school
activities, but better yet gives
me great hope for ow future.
I think that was the point

Michael Vossen was trying to
make when he uttered some-
thing that's been gnawing at
me ever since.
As he took to the podium
to speak about his students
and their high-caliber acade-
mics, be used the media to
make a point.
He bemoaned bow media
members will call him for
comment when tragic events
1happen on school campuses,
like the shooting at Santana
High in Santee. I "The media emphasizes
the negative," be said.
"]fhat•s what they like to do.·
Pardon me a moment as I
,get a little defensive and
maybe a teeny weeny bit
negative.
After bearing that,' I won·
dered if Principal Vossen bad
read the front page of the
Daily Pilot that morning. If
be did, be must have missed
the banner bead.line across
the top of the page announc-
ing that Ensign Middle
School bad been named a
distinguished school.
And maybe be didn't have
time that morning to open up
and look inside the paper, but
if he did, he would have seen
a full page devoted to those
very same Academic All Sta.rs
that be was praising.
And of .course, he must
not be aware of the entire
page 2 that we devote to
school coverage each week
in addition to ow regular
coverage, or ow sports pages
that concentrate almost
entirely on youth and prep
sports and our extensive
graduation and back-to-
school stories and photos.

In truth, Vossen's shot at
the media is hardJy unique.
Heck, we rank right up there
with lawyers these days.
Don't get me wrong. I'm
the first to admit that some·
times we go overboard. ·
Sometimes in our zest to tell
a good story, the big picture
gets a little fuzzy. And some-
times, because we're human,
we just flat get it wrong.
But I assure you, most
jownallsts I know didn't
choose this career because
they "like~ to be negative.
They did so because it can
be an exciting and reward-
ing job and because they
believe the freedom of the
press to bring the news to
the peopJe is sacrosanct in a
democriftic society.
And whether you are learn·
ing of the good or bad news,
think about what your life
would be without the media.

is today without great coaching,
which includes encouraging
parents who supported him •in
every way they could.•
Johnson, a cross country and
track coach at El Toro High,
where he teaches marine biology
and oceanography, was the
second of four children growing
up. His father, Aldis, is a doctor.
His late mother, Margaret, was
a teacher and PTA president.
· Branching out into the family
tree, his mother's father was a
school superintendent in Iowa,
while hls father's mother was
also a teacher. (There will be a
test on I.his later.)
"Education just feels right,•
Johnson said. "To be a part of
peoples' lives, I think
of it as a privilege to be
working and sharing in
the classroom and out
in the field.•
For Johnson, who
later competed in track
and field at Cal Poly
San Luis Obispo,
teaching and coaching,
you could say, was in
his blood.
The late Tom Fisher,
fracture in a vertebra and missed
ample playing time in 1968. The
injury spoiled some of his senior
year, as well, with persistent
back spasms.
In Estancia's highly
anticipated game against
crosstown rival Costa Mesa,
however, Johnson scored the
Eagles' only touchdown on an
80-yard kickoff return to open
the second half.
·1 think at that time I was
considering football as my main
sport, but that changed when I
went out for football at Golden
West College and continued
having back problems,• said
Johnson, who played one year
of football under follller GWC
Coach Ray Shackleford, but
competed in track for two
seasons under Coach Tom Noon
in the 100, 220, .(40 relay and
mile relay.
Johnson, who also competed
in cross country his sophomore
year at GWC, where
bis academic stature
also improved, landed
at Cal Poly San Luis
Obispo.

Johnson, who graduated in 1970
and played three years of varsity
football, including two seasons
as the team's star tailback.
Johnson's name still grazes
the Estancia track and field
record board in the t 00· and
220-yard dashes. the oldest
varsity records listed, set in 1970.
Johnson, if memory serves him
correct, broke the 100 mark at
the fifth annual Beach Cities
Invitational at Newport Harbor
High.
"I kind of remember running
the race and realizing it was a
new school record,· said
Johnson, whose times of 9.8 in
the 100 and 21.6 m the 220 will
probably never be broken, since
yards are no longer used as the
sport's measuring rod.
"Maybe (the record) will
always be there,· added
Johnson, whose tenure as·a
school-record holder is preceded
only by a JV pole vault record
of 13-4, set in 1969 by
"C. Nomura," according to the
board .
As a senior, instead of the 100,
Johnson qualified for the CIP
Southern Section finals in the
220. •That was a pretty
influential moment in my track
career with Coach Fi.sher,· be
said.
In football, Johnson was a
standout under Coach John
Lowry for two autumns, then
under Coach Phil Brown his
seniOT year in 1969. ln Week 2 of
bis junior year, John.son carried
31timesfor225 yards against
Pacifica, a 33-12 victory for
Estanda. one of only two wins
that seuon for the Eagles.
But. in the next ~· JohnlOn suffered a l1.oe

a weightlifting program in the
(football) offseason at Estancia
and that encouraged us to build
up for football,• Johnson said. •1
attribute a lot of my track times
my senior year (in high school) to
that great football weightlifting
program. That had me build up
stamina.•
Later, Johnson walked on at
Cal Poly, where Coach Steve
Simmons was another influence
in his life.
J ohnson, who majored in P.E.
and minored in biology, later
earned a masters degree in
science education at Cal State
Fullerton.
Before John.son began
substitute teaching, he was
pursuing a degree in counseling
in Lompoc.
In the spring of 1971, Johnson
introduced himself to El Toro
track coach Larry Nitta and got a
job as a walk-on coach. And,
that spring, Jobmon began
substitute teaching in four
different school diltricta.
Johnson, the latest ~ ln
the Daily Pilot Sportl Hall of
Fame, was hired u a full-time
teacher at El Toro in 1918 and
has been there ever since.

select boys under· 12 team turned in
their best perfonnance of the season
in a 5-1 victory over the Tustin Infer-
no, Saturday at the Costa Mesa
Farm Complex.
The Costa Mesa players'
reward? Coach Sal Burciaga can-
celed practices during their week
off from school.
Burciaga, perhaps, deserves a
vacation as well. His strategy was a
big reason for the outcome.
He moved his nephew, Marco
Burciaga who usually plays goalie,
from the net to a forward. Marco
Burciaga scored a hat trick in the
first half as Costa Mesa's select
team, from Region 120, fought off a
1-0 deficit and possessed the
momentum throughout the second
half. German Higareda scored two
goals of his own to help Costa Mesa.

noted Tustin had beaten his team 2-
1 during the regular season (this is
now the select season). ·1 promised
Marco he would be able to play for-

Region 96, began to threaten with
several shots. Tustin's Josh Sanchez
led a nice pass to Alex Emerson on
a breakaway, but Costa Mesa's Eric
West ended the threat with his
steal. Michael Mejia also stopped
Tustin on another scoring opportu-
nity.
The Inferno, however, earned a
1-0 lead when Noe Rubio caught
Costa Mesa off guard, immediately
after Mejia sent the ball out of
bounds.
But less than two minutes later,
Marco Burciaga scored his first of
three goals as be finished success-
fully on a breakaway.
The second quarter began with
the same scenario as he gave Costa
Mesa its first lead of the game. With
10 minutes remaining in the half,
Sal Burciaga Jr. set up Higareda for
his first goal, which prompted
Higareda to break out his body-
builder pose, in celebration of his
score. .
Costa Mesa obviously had the
momentum and continued to
unleash its attack as Marco Burcia-
ga slid and stretched in front of
Tustin's goal, blasting the ball into
the net for his hat trick.
Costa Mesa's select squad nearly
scored again before the half ended
as its players fired three more shots.
Higareda bad another opportu-
nity to give the fans his bodybuilder
pose when he beat Tustin's goalie to
a ball and booted it into the empty
net to close out the scoring.
Marco Burciaga did not play the
third quarter, yet bis teammates
increased the defensive intensity.
Danny Alderete, who played goalie,
finished with five saves.
When Marco Burciaga returned
in the final quarter be almost scored
again. Costa Mesa's Jaybenny
Quiroz sent bis comer kick directly
in front of Tustin's net and Marco
Burciaga headed the ball, which
danced on top of the crossbar.
