Some tradi- tions are simply blips in lime. Mere fads masquerading as traditions. They crash and bum or simply vanish without fanfare. The more meaningful conventions we entertain, often hang ~und for several generations)'· at's because lhcy lenq ....f.\ ut only lend - our families and communiti~ stability and security in a world that'is otherwise plagued by transition. But even the spars that hold these traditions aloft fail with time dl1d the gnawing or d1strac- l.Jon. Then one day you tum around and they're no longer there. Witness what we have going on with two venerable traditions of our twin cities - the Newport Harbor Christ- mas Boat Parade and the Costa M esa rish Fry. Each of these stalwarts of Newport- M esa have recently come under some buffeting that, probably, most will disrruss without much sense or dan- gN. But for rank i.entirnental- 1.:.ts hke me who are hyper- st•nsilive to time's persistent march, I don't Like what I'm seeing. Beginning in 1978, when my folks moved to Balboa ~land from Orange, grabbing a front-row seat on the Island's north wall for the Boat Parade has pretty much been an annual place holder in my family's holiday tradi- tions. Save for those occasion- al years when some cranky vtruS partied in our home the week before Christmas, my wtfe and I have cadrued our lour children to cbannel's edge to witness the event that they placed in the same league with V1Sitatlons to San- ta's workshop. For my sons - now 14 and 12 -the luster of the event bas dunmed a watt or two, but they sWJ enjoy it. M y little girls are slill dazzled. Over the years my wife and I have taken in the boat parade aboard the Wild Byron de Arakal /8ETWEEN THE L!NES Goose, Crom. the,,'1.ndows of the Villa Nova, Pie Rusty Peli-• can and Josh Slocums. But still our favorite spot remains the north wall al the end of Pearl Avenue, and the parade is our tranquil harbor from the great sea changes that seem to come with advancing age. But ror how long? For in recent days we find the New- port Harbor Area Chamber of Commerce -the backers of lhls great tradition - noodling on hair-brained ideas for curtailing the event. Some are peddling the notion that the Boat Parade will become a better thing if the parade route is tnmrned. Oth- ers argue that its seven-day run IS a bit too lengthy and should be pared some. It's this kind of tinkering with lradi- tion that signals the begin- ning of a slow march to the gallowl> for the institutions m our lives. The Costa M esa Fish Fry -the city's last real connec- tion to its RockwelLian roots as It plunges headlong toward urbanism -is the other grand tradition m town that shows signs of withenng. More than a half-century old and sponsored by the Costa M esa Lions Club, the Fish Fry has been a living museum of Americana in Costa Mesa. It has the cotton candy and the beauty contest, the cheesy carnival rides and the talent shows, the candied apples and those fabulous heart- clogging chunks of deep-fried Cod. But it also used to feature a parade with high school bands, and the mayor and r.i..r.1tn ntt -.uno.t "' Miss Costa Mesa in open-top cars riding down Harbor Boulevard. That part of it has long since died and see1ns to be missed by few. naditions die that way. Ap~ently, 53- year-old Irvine ~i:lent Arlene Wolff ~"QJ:tpped an ankle when she stumbled over a curb at Orange Coast College last June 3. WoUf, according to her lawsuit, was attending an Apple Computer Exhibit at the college then stopped in at the Fish Fry. While heading to her car, she stwnbled over a curb and broke her ankle. It isn't (or me to begrudge Wollf's $80,000 claim, although I'm not sure an ankle is worth that much. But Orange Coast College gets d big fat raspberry in my book for attempting to pawn the claim off on the Lions Cluh, which in tum has placed th.is year's Fish Fry in danger. Apparently, the rich heritag<' of the Costa Mesa Fish Fry is worth far less than 80 grand to the Coast Community Col- lege District. That's too bad Does all of this mean we need to plant the lilies, preSl> the black suit and polish th<' hearse for these two fine lrd- dilions of our Newport-M esd community? Not this year. Nor probably the next or the next. But• I do lament that these defining community events may have bequn their fade as all tradibons do. And to no one's partJcular notice. She and her mother, Jody, contacted the Surfrider Foun- dation and Idex Laboratories, which makes water testing kits. She used the kits to test the waters from one end of New- port to the other, staring with the Santa Ana River Jetty, then the Newport Pier, The Wedge and finally at Little Corona. "I tested each site four times, H she said. "The first day' it had just rained and l took a sample of all four. The Santa Ana River Jetty was poUuted and UtUe Corona was polluted -all the others were clean.· When Miranda did her second, third and fourth tests, the nver jetty, the pier and The Wedge tested clean for the water bacteria, coliform. All four sites tested clean or E-coh. But each l.lme when she added colisure powder to the water samples taken from Lit- tle Corona, to test for col- iform, it turned red, indicaUng contamination. "It's really sad that this is supposed to be the big marine center and they have this going right into it," said Jody Young. Miranda's moth- er, who also grew up rn New- port Beach. While Mlranda'.s findings disproved her hypothesis, the pollution at Little Corona is not news to everyone. Nancy Gardener, a mem- ber of the city's harbor quality citizens advisory committee who is active in the Newport Beach chapter of the Surfrld- er Foundation, has been working with others .to pre- serve the beach. "If she had a big budget and could hdve tested for oth- er things, she might have found nitrates or heavy met- als from brakes on cars," Gardner said. "What she found was an indication of a problem -a problem we know rlbout. It must have been interesting to find first- hand ." There are two possible solutions being considered right now, Gardner said. The first is a mobile filtra- tion system lhdl the city is testing, which would suck the surface water up and pump it back as cleansed drink.mg Wdler. The second option, since reclaimed Wdter tends to be '>Uch d controversidl issue, she said, is tho crcdt1on of ponds in the canyon above Little Corond that wcluld catch and naturdlly cledn the runofl by WdY of plant We. Bri•flt_ln THE NEWS First Crystal Cove planning meeting set The first in a series of workshops on how to restore Crystal Cove's historic district for public use will be held April 26 by the state Depart- ment of Parks and Recreation. It will begin at 7 p.m. in lbe multipurpose room at LlncolJ'\ Elementary School. 3101 Pacific View Drive, Corona del Mar. The state acquired the property from the Irvine Co. in 1979 and designated it as Crystal Cove State Park in 1980. In 1996, state officials signed a contract with a pri- vate development company to renovate the historic dis- trict and put in a luxury hotel. The proposaJ was met with strong opposition from both residents of the beachside community and environmen- talists. It was scrapped last monlb, though residents of the historic cottages still face a July eviction date. Parks department officials said widespread opposition was the reason they canceled the contract and decided to get the public involved in deciding the issue. Officials said they hope to hold two or three public workshops now through September. The public pldnning process involves looking at possible uses for the site, ongoing preservation and recreational opportunities, officials said. At the end lt was Santa Ana Valley which was short, by the margin of Evan McGuire's run (below) ln the bottom of the seventh as Michael McGuire (7) gives )\lm five, celebrating the victory. Costa Mesa thrives in the clutch, wins, 4-3 J 111e Mustangs erase a 3-0 deficit, triumph with two runs in the seventh inning. Steve Virgen DAILY PILOT COSTA MESA In the clutch -where a pldyer Cdn become a superstar or a goat -Josh Feldman and Carlos Franco, of the Costa Mesa I ltglt baseball team. answered the challenge with aggressiveness Tuesday. With the Mustangs down, 3-2. in the seventh inning. the two seniors drove in runs with blasts to the left- center field gap to spark a 4-3 con- solation semHindl win over visiting Santa Ana Valley in the Pride of the Coast Tournament. With two outs. Franco's hit, which scored senior Evan McGuire, proved to be the game-winner. He smacked a 2-2 pitch with a calm, yet gritty demeanor. Runrung toward the fence, the Santa Ana Valley left fielder nearly caught the ball when he stretched out his glov~ and the ball flew over his left shoulder. "It's hke I told the guys." Costa Mesa Coach Kjrk Bauermeister said . "Good teams win close games and good teams come from behind to wm. We played well enough to have the chance of wmrung. • Feldman's game-tying RBI single scored 1uruor Kevin DeSandro, who led off w1th a double. dS he found the same gdp dS Feldman and Fran- co. Feldman went 3 for 4 to go with his RBI. The Mustangs ( 11-6-1 ), who answered a 3-0 deficit, scored their two runs. despite seeing two promising rallies snuffed out in the fifth and sixth. In the fifth inning. Costa Mesa senior Brent Stevens reached on an error and, one out later, McGuire followed with a base hit. Feldman cracked an infield single, with a PREP BASEBALL grounder just past second base to load the bases and junior Nick Cabi- co walked for the Mustangs' first run. Falcons senior Angel Reyes, howe ver, seemed to take the life out of Costa Mesa when he e nded the threat. .d1vmg to catch junior Michael McGuire's shot to right field. In the Mustangs' next at-bat. Franco led off with a double and senior Mike Armstrong pinch ran for him. With one out, Reyes. who relieved Robert Padilla, balked to move Armstrong to third and Billy Halverson ripped an RBI single. But, . before Costa Mesa could grab the momentum, Reyes recorded a strikeout and catcher Robert Vasquez threw out Halverson trying to steal second for a double play. "They know what needs to be done,• Bauenneister said of his players battling through the last three innings. •There's not much that needs to be said.• Cabico, who pitched 62/3 innings, displayed what needed lo be done. He kept his team in the game with his 97-pitch perfonnance, lhat included three strikeouts and per- fect innings in the fourth and sixth. Cabico scattered seven hits and walked two, before Franco relieved him and struck out Gus Navarro to end the seventh with runners on first and second. Santa Ana Valley. which has lost 10 one-run games this season. fell to 3-16. Evan McGuire, who played right field and first base, finished 2 for 3 with a walk and Halverson, Mesa's shortstop, also went 2 for 3. Hockinson's heroics lift Corona del Mar, 2-1 •His single in the eighth rewards Rhodes' strong pitching against Century. Barry Faulkner DAILY PILOT CORONA DEL MAR -Wes Hockmson JOmed the 200 I Corona del Mar High baseball heroes dub Tuesday and his 1muauon could not have come at a better tlrne . "Wes was overdue,· CdM Coach John Emme said of his seruor sec- ond baseman, who came through wtth the bases loaded and no outs in the eighth inrung against visiting Century. Hockinson lined a first-pitch fast- ball into the left-field comer to drive in the winning run In a 2-1 Pride of the Coast Tournament consolation victory. The game-winning bit, one of several by various CdM players this spring, could have ramifications far more important than Tuesday's win. "I had been a little down on myself mentally lately,• Hockinson confessed. "I started off well (offen- sively) this season, but then the last six games or so, I had struggled. I came e&Jy before today's game lo get some cuts m. This should help my mentality the re t of the season.• The big hit also helped CdM sophomore left-hander Nick Rhodes cash in another quality mound per- formance. Rhodes went the dis- tance, allowing nine hits and no earned runs. with one walk and PREP BASEBILL three strikeouts. He stranded at least one baserunner in every mning. 10 in all. He thre w 108 pitch· es to record his fifth victory without a loss in his first varsity season. <I Nick deserved that (win),· Emme said. •He had guys on base m every inning. but he battled and made the pitches he needed to.• The Sea Kings' defense, though guilty of four errors, also made the plays it needed to, including nailing two Centurions at the plate. The most dramatic defensive play ca.me in the Century eighth, when pinch-runner Ruben Pineda attempted to score from second on a two-out single by Tori Garcia. Cd.M left fielder Dave Knecht charged the ball near the line and threw a strike to catcher Rory McK- eever. who smothered the ball on a short hop, then held his ground as Pineda slid right into the tag. The home plate umpire initially made the safe signal, but quickly reversed himself and the inning ended with the game still dead- locked. •Rory tagged him and nad the ball In hts stomach in hts bare hand," Emme said. "The ump said safe and I ran out of the dugout like A mad man. But, when J got to the plate, (the ump) said 'He's out and I called him out.' "It was the best answer I ever got from an u.mplre in my We. I think he thought out and said sale and, to his credit, be cor- reeled himself. Rory did a great job blocking the plate and Dave made a great throw.• The winning rally was set up by two Century errors on the same play, the only miscues of the game for the visitors (4-15). Billy Eagle hit a bouncer to the third baseman, who threw high to first. Eagle raced to second as the first baseman retrieved the ball in foul ground, then threw wildly to third. As the ball got away, Eagle moved to third. Hoping to create a force play at the plate, Century Coach Nate Guerrero had Andrew Johns and Bric Snell walked intentionally to Corona del Mar's Wes Hoddn- son fires to first to complete a double play on Century Tuesday. SEANHIUER / DAILY Pit.OT load the bases. But Hock.inson ruined the strategy with his third hit of the day. Hockinson, 3 for 4, Wft1#.JJ.le only Sea King with multiple hits, though Keith Long. Johns, Snell and McK- eever also contributed to the seven- bit attack off Century left-bander Freddy Medina. Medina, wbo absorbed the tough-luck loss to fall to 1-4, struck out four and walked five, including the two intentional passes. He blanked the Sea Kings for slx straight lnnlngs. after giving up a run ln the first. Long doubled with one out to spark the Ont-inning CdM rally, then advanced to third on a flyout. After a walk, a wild pitch allowed Long to score. That run stood up until the fourth, when Jimmy Ruiz singled with one out, went to second on a groundout and scored when a CdM infielder whiffed on a ground ball. Long gunned down another Cen- tury runner at the plate in the first, knocking down a sinking liner, retrieving the ball in short left field, then throwing a strike on the fly to McKeever who applied the tag. Rhodes also benefited from a sparkling double play to end the seventh. After a runner reached on a one-out error, long fielded a sharp ground to short and flipped to Hock- inson, who, with the runner sliding into him, made the tum. Hockinson also made a fine play on a weak chopper, charging the ball near the mound, then making an accurate off-balance throw to Johns for the out. The victory would have pro- pelled the Sea Kings (1•-4), ranked No. 9 in Orange County, into the consolation championship today. But, honoring a previous agreement not to play Pacific Coast League rival Costa Mesa, CdM will instead host Santa Ana Valley today at 11 a.m. to conclude the tournament. ....
