•The Newport to Ensenada International Yacht Race
sets sail this week. And all hopes are for high winds.

NEWPORT BEACH -Some
might say it's just a send-off.
After all, the paella festival and
trophy ceremony for the 54th annu-
al Newport to Ensenada Interna-
tional Yacht Race will attract thou-
sands of people 125 nautical miles
down the coast and south or the
border.
But when the 430-plus race
boats and hundreds o( spectator
vessels crowd Newport Harbor on
Friday, it's hard to argue with event
organizers that they're putting 011 a
show unlike any other.
"It's quite a spectacle to see that
many boats,• said Jerry Shandera,
who's the commodore of this year's
race.
There's the biggest boat with
100 feet, the small ones that mea-

The race began back in 1947,
when members of the Newport
Ocean Sailing Assn. decided to
organize a small, ·just-for-fun·
event for sailors who had returned
from the battles of World Wdr II.
They'd expected about 30 skip-
pers to show up. But when the race
got under way on Apnl 23, 1948,
117 boats Lined up behind the
starting tine.
Winds estimated at 25 to 35
knots soon brushed away almost
hall of the competitors and only 65
boats ma de it to Ensenaqa.

A busy end of April
A hoy.
April means different
things to different
people -like making that
last minute tax-filing dead-
line -but to me, April
means the Newport to Ense-
nada Yacht Race and Clean
Harbor Day.
The Newport to Ensenada
race is the largest interna-
tional yacht race in the world,
and again, I see my name
listed along with other promi-
nent names in the area as an
advisory committee member
in the Ensenada Race's offi-
cial magazine. I have to
admit it is an honorary posi-
tion that allows me to attend
the VIP fundions, and grate-
ful as I am to be so highlight-
ed, it is the work of many' at
the Newport Ocean Sailing
Association (NOSA) that
makes this race successful.

T hC' Newport Harbor has been
the temporary home lo a num-
ber of IMge ve~sels over the
yedrS, and not dlwdys without some
trouble. Among them wds the
steamship Catalina.
In the spring of 1978, Duncan
Mcintosh, sponsor of the annual "ln-
Wdter Boat Show" dt the Lido Mari-
na ViJJage, ch<lrtcrcd the S.S. Catali-
na as a boat !.how altrdction. Howev-
er, she did not come under tter own
power. a nd getting the ship into the
harbor had its problems.
The Catalina's bottom was so
fouled with marine growth that the
t planned speed through the water was
··-not obtamed. Thus Calallna anived at
· the harbor entrance behind schedule.
She entered Newport Harbor after the
morrung high llde. Here, she was
lowed m with two tugboats, one
pulling and one tugboat attached to
her stem lo help gwde the large
steamship and to hold her back Lf nec-
essary. i:emporary pilings were put
down in deep water off the Newport
Balboa Savings and Loa n building to
moor Catalina parallel to the shore.
But even with the extensive plan-
ning for he r visit, the Catalina ran
aground off the Balboa Bay Club.

Not everything went
smoothly when the
steamship Catalina
cam e to town
this point. And with her 16-(oot draft.
she went aground shortly after noon.
There may be a charted sand bar or
shallow place at this location.
She remained aground until the
flext high tide at about 10 o'clock.
With three tugs pulling, the S.S.
Catalina was freed from th~ muddy
bottom of Newport Harbor and.
moved to her temporary moorin~ in
front of the Newport Balboa Savings
and Loan Building.
FoUowing the •Jn-Water Boat
Show," the Catalina was kept here
for an extra week. A very successful
fund-raiser party was held on board
for then-Sen. Pete Wilson . The
Cafalina was towed, at high tide, out
of Newport Harbor without incident.
She was taken to San Diego.
The S.S. Catalina was built by the
Los Angeles ship building company
at Wilmington, Calif. in 1924 for P.K.
Wrigley. She was designed to trans-
port passengers and freight between
Wilmington and Avalon on Santa

The world's laJ'gesl lntemaUonal
yacht race, the Newport to Ensenada
Race, will take place at noon April 27,
just outside the Newport Harbor
entrance. Free. For more lnfonnation,

Orange Coast College's School of
Sailing and Seamanship will offer an
excursion to Catalina aboard the Glin
de Mar from 9 a.m. Saturday, April 28,
Catalina Island. This daily service
began in 1924 and continued until
1976, except for the war years. ·
During the war, the Catalina was
acquired by the U.S. Army. She was
used to transport army troops from
an overseas staging base -Camp
Stoneman on the Sacramento River
-to anchored troop transport at San
Francisco Bay. Painted dark gray, she
would, at night, silently come down
the Sacramento River to the
anchored troop transports. After
receiving their passengers, the troop
transport ships would sail out under-
neath the Golden Gate before dawn.
The S.S. Catalina is 302 feet in
length over all with a length on the
water liqe of 285 feet. Her beam is
52 feet, with a draft of 16 feet. She is
powered by two 2,000 horsepower
trtple-expansion steam engines. Her
normal cruising speed is 15.5 knots.
Since leaving Newport Harbor in
1978, the Catalina bas had several
owners. She was anchored off Santa
Monica for a time. Catalina eventual-
ly was towed to Ensenada, Mexico,
where she still rests on the muddy
bottom of Ensenada harbor.

avid sailor who has also
sailed the Ensenada Race.
Everyone knows that the
night before the race, Thurs-
day, there is the annual pre-
race fiesta at the Bahia
Corinthian Yacht Oub where
it is shoulder-to-shoulder and
standing room ortly. I may
swing by this year, but I
promised to take my wife out
for her birthday to a place
that is a bit more intimate.
The next morning comes
too soon for a few who stayed
late at the fiesta, b!Jt the start
is at noon just outside the jet-
ties. Por the second year,

Seriously though, volunteer
coaches are needed for Adams, Cali-
fornia, Sonora, Whittier, Pomona.
TeWinkle and Victoria schools.
Each player will get a medal for
participating and the winners in
each division will get a champi-
onship cup.
I must admit the news. of the Fish
Fry certainly brought back memories
for me.
Never heard of him or the shows? And now it could all be gone.
Me neither.
One of my first assignments as a
full-fledged reporter for this newspa-
per was to cover the Fish Fry.
That was 11 years ago, and things
have changed a bit.
The Fish Fry had a parade and
was staged at Llons Park.
And I must sheepishly admit now
that assigning a wet-behind-the-ears
cub reporter to something like the
Fish Fry seemed like something akin
to asking local real estate legend Bill
Cote to sell a double-wide trailer for
you.

record time of six hours, 46 minutes
and 40 seconds partly because of
favorable wind conditions in 1998.
At the other end of the spectrum,
there's those who take more than 50
hours to reach the goal -or never
make it there at all.
Some "realize they are not going
lo make it to Ensenada," said Shan-
dera, adding that the deadline to
arrive lS Sunday at 11 a.m. A few
turn around and head back home.
Others turn on the ir engines to at
least JOin in the festivities.
For the teams that get in early,
the party lasts unW trophies get
awarded on Sunday at 2 p.m.
"For those that get in Late, it's a
shorter party,• Shandera said.
With still a week to go, it's a l.Jttle
early to tell what the winds will be

But while it doesn't look like
there will be heavy winds this
weekend, "there should be some

THE FASTEST START EVER
One thing Shandera and 'his fel-
low organizers do hope to guarantee
is a swift passing of the boats over
the starting line.
What has taken at least two hours
in previous years will hopefully be
reduced to one hour and 20 minutes.
With three starting Lines instead of
two to get the 27 classes on their
course, Shandera said the last boats
should be off around 1 :20 p.m.
That's what event planners had
hoped for last year after adding the
extra Line. But problems with secur-
ing the orange plastic buoys held up
the fleet for more than an hour.
With newfound support from the
experts, that shouldn't be an issue
this time.
"We've enlisted the support of
the Orange County Harbor Patrol,"
Shandera said. "They will be help-
ing us to set the mark this year."·
As veteran racers can attest, a
smooth start is highly appreciated.
"It gets a little hectic," said Ed
Quesada, who has raced for 27
years in a row and will skipper his
46-foot sloop "Sirena."
"You start playing bumper boats
and It gets kind of hairy," he said.

Quesada, who co-owns Boat
Builders & Sailors in Newport
Beach, says the event is simply a
"gTeat race."
But just to make swe that he and
his crew members don't lose their
excitement, he's got a rule on his boat.
Every year, he takes along some-
one who has never been in the race
before.
"That way, we never get used to
the race," he said. "We see it
through the (newcomer's) eyes.•
The race is -challenging. There's
no way around it. And the lighter
the winds, the more strenuous it
gets because the crew has to work
harder to adjust the sails. Quesada
said.
No matter what happens, he's
aiming for first place in his class this
year.
"We've gotten every trophy," he
said. "Second, thiid, fourth and fifth.
We've been bridesmaids for too
long."
In any case, he's trying to catch a
lot of sleep Thursday night and
"hopefully the crew won't party the
night before very much" either.
That's because he won't get
much sleep on the boat -maybe an

hour or two -Quesada said.
Vic Stem plans on a little more
than that. Once a crack in the hull of

Loa,• is fixed and the 78-year-old
has touched up on a little paint here
and there, Stem and his 43-foot boat
will enter the race for the 39th time.
Asked why he keeps coming
back to Newport Harbor for the race
every year, bis answer is simple.
"Because it's there,• he said.
Apart from his role as skipper,
Stem's in charge of one of three
watches that lasts for three or four
hours. Jie's also the cre.w's chef and
plans to treat bis seven fellow sailors
to Italian chicken dishes and mush-
room and ham omelets ln Ule morn-
ing.
Stem coropetes in 18 races,
including the Catalina island series,
each year. As far as trophies are
concerned, he's certainly got
enough already. Most of them are
stored away in boxes at his Long
Beach home, but he keeps the latest
ones on his mantelpiece.
But that's not going to stop him
from raciog for more. As long as his
trusted boat keeps on going, he'll
stay in the game.
And while the catamaran has
already traveled 67,000 nautical
miles during het lifetime -the
equivalent of three trips around the
equatgr .:_Stem said she'll probably
outlast him.
"I believe that I will give out
before she does,• he said. "That's
what's going to be the case. I will be
with lmi Loa until I die."

five years, coach.ing virtually
every level at the parochial
school in Rancho Santa
Margarita.
Then, for two years, Dixon
assisted Reynolds at SoCaJ
College. Finally, Dixon was
hired as the head coach at El
Toro, where in five seasons he
has compiled an impressive
l 03-39 record, including golding
the Chargers to the ClF Southern
Section Division I-AA finals in
2001. .

ney's California Adventure.
"A free vacation, plus my kids get
to go see Mickey (Mouse)," said Ofa-
hengaue, known to his former
Brigham Young University teammates
as T-bone. "I'm excited."
Ofahengaue was less than lbrilled
as the seventh and final round of lhe
draft wound down, especially after
Jacksonville, which had shown the
most pre-draft interest, concluded its
selections without tabbing the 26-
year-old native of Tonga, who grew
up in Hawati.
"My wlfe (Carey) and I had our
own little war room and we were fol-
lowing along watching the draft on
TV," Ofahengaue said. "I had some
friends over. because I was expecting
to be drafted. But. with two picks left,
l turned the TV off. Then, I saw the
Arizona Cardmals on my (telephone)
caller ID and it was their coaches
telling me they had drafted me.
"The tight ends coach (Pete Hoen-
er) sounded 'excited and I was really
excited,• Ofahengaue said. "I told
him he had his starting tight end for
next season. Then, as soon as I got off
the phone, my wife and I started look-
ing into who they had at tight end.

Catalina lsland, another cruise
around the harbor and a trip to
Harbor High to visit Heritage Hall.
The Class of '51 drew many
honors in most sports, including a
co-championship in varsity
basketball, but it also drew high
accord in the fall of '51 when it
contnbuted numerous football
players to Orange Coast College
and helped win the school's
first-ever gridiron championship in
the Eastern Conference.
Chairwomen Nonna Marshall
Millett, (949) 673-9595, and Ann
Gnsty Knipp, (949) 548-2678, will
create a golf event if there is
sufficient interest.
The key Harbor grid mates were
All-Sunset Leaguers Bill Wittman,

Second team all-leaguers included

The football team, under Coach
Al Irwin, won six, lost three. The
pleasing wins came over Riverside,
Oxnard, Santa Ana, Anaheim,
Orange and Huntington Beach.
The losses were to FuJ.lert9n,
Excelsior and SL Anthony.
Coach Ralph Reed's varsity
track team enjoyed a th.I.rd year of
winning all dual meets, but was
nosed out in the all-league final
meet by Santa Ana.
Bob Norman's high jump of 6-2
518 was one of the highest marks in
the CIF in 1950. Uoyd Swingle
heaved the shot, 53-5, and his
teammate, Bob Van Drlmlen, was
only an inch behind. Sob
Woodhouse clocked a 4:49.9 in the
mile.
Baseball and tennis bad average
seasons while the boys varsity
swim team enjoyed a school record
in the 200-yard relay when Stan
Agar, Bruce Baird, Don Aarvold
and Ed Johnson finished in 1 :46.3.

On the running side of things,
This year Urban has started 25
games and is hitting .241 with 14 RBis.
Last year, Urban compiled a .227 batting
average with three home runs and 23
RBis.
Those numbers are rapidly on the rise
after Urban's four-game hitting tear. In
that span, Urban was 9 for 17 with five
runs scored and six RBis. The Cyclones
(11-18-1) won all four games during that
span.
if Princeton University sophomore
Bruce Hancock (Costa Mesa) makes as
much of an impact this year as he did as a
freshman, the Tigers will be in excellent
shape for the future.
Last year, Hancock was a member of
the record-setting freshman 4 x 800-meter
relay team that clocked in with a 7 :48.60
at the New Year's Invitational.

University's Charles Chatman is looking
to wrap up bis Eagles' career with a bang.
The Costa Mesa High product is hitting
.318 with a team-leading six home runs
and 29 RBis. His 26 stolen bases have
helped pave the way for his team-leading
35 runs scored.
Also last year, Hancock was the winner
of the Babb Memorial Award, presented
to the outstanding freshman contributor to
the track team.
On the women's side. Liz Morse
(Corona del Mar) hit the Princeton ground
running. the freshman indoor standout
won the 800 at the Princeton Invitational
on Feb. 17 with a 2:14.77. Eight days later,
she put together a strong performance at
the indoor Heptagonals, placing fifth in
the 400 with a 58.22.

campaign, when be led the Golden State
Athletic Conference with 15 home runs,
23 stolen bases and six triples. He also
ranked in the top five with 73 hits (second).

local prep golfers stayed local and have
helped Orange Coast College remain a
force to be reckoned with in the Orange

Stanford freshman Billy Clayton (Newport
Harbor) gives the Cardinal a bright future
in men's volleyball.
Clayton is fifth on the team with 93
kills and is only one off the team lead in
service aces with 19. He also has 38
blocks and 24 digs.
