lobby for an airport at the
dosed El Toro Marine base.
Steel and the other group
members, who represent the
Orange County Regional Air-
port Authority, have sched-
uled several meetings with
high-ranking legislators and
other officials, including act-
ing Secretary of the Navy
Robert B. Price.
"We'll meet with some
people to try to expedite El
Toro,• Steel said.
The delegation also has
lined up meetings with offi-·
cials in the Office of Econom-
ic Adjustment, the division of
Steel said he was unable to
pin down Rep. Chnstopher
Cox (R-Newport Beach) for

nors were the lifeline of
the V1Sta liucha neigh-
borhood.
Tom and Susan Connor and
their nine children touched the
lives of at least a dozen families
on the WUldlng street over a short
ti.me, and neighbors were devas-
tated when the farruly moved to
New York.
But the Vista liucha commu-
nity has rallied around the Con-
nors since Tom Connor, 61 , died
ot a sudden heart attack Thurs-
day evening while playing bas-
ketball with a friend.

The Connors rode cross-coun-
try in a truck two weeks ago and
were staying in a motel in Costa
Mesa while Tom Connor w as
hoping to find a job, which he
did. Connor had also arranged for
his family to move into a house in
Mission Viejo.

ly members' lives upside down.
The landlord of the Mission Viejo
home bas since canceled the
lease. Neighbors say the family
has meager savings and no
income with their sole breadwin-
ner gone. Their clothes are
packed away in U-Haul boxes,
and neighbors are taking turns
hosting the family.
But on Tuesday afternoon, the
entire family and the community
gathered at a memorial service
for Tom Connor. Susan Connor
played the piano as daughters
Sarah, 18, and Shiloh, 19, sang
hymns. Each member of the fam-
ily delivered his or her eulogy.

At monthly workshops, Cruttenden
teaches thP basics -how to give a
handshdke, work with co-woikers, fill
out a 1ob application and other needed
skLUS.
"It's that basic," Cruttenden said. ~A
lot of them have been abused. They just
nc>ed ~ome love and basic help."
Cruttenden became mvolved with
Orange County Works 111 1990, after
woup founder Don MacAllister called
him ford donation.

his foster home in Baltimore as an 18-
year-old with only $100 in his pocket.
After stepping off a bus at Union Sta-
tion in downtown Los Angeles, MacAJ-
lister wandered around and eventually
ended up living under the Huntington
Pier for more than two years.
But by the time he went to Crutten-
den, MacAllister was on his feet look-
ing to help others in his shoes.
"When he said that he himsell was a
foster lad and had been homeless for a
while, I thought, 'There's a guy who
walks the walk and talks the
talk,'"Cruttenden said.
In addition to the workshops, the 50-

foster teens, from ages 15 to 18, partici-
pating in Orange County Works.
"Walter's involvement has had a big
ripple effect,• MacAllister said.

opportunity to see Checker,
the Village People and the
other performers this year
because the fair has changed
things a bit.
Instead of shows at 7 and 9
p.m.,· only one show will be
held nightly at the Arlington
Theater. Each show, however,
will host 9,000 guests rather
than the previous 6,200, said
Steve Beazley, th~ fair's .
deputy general manager. Of
those 9,000 seats, t.600 will
serve as reserved seating,
which will cost $10 each. That
way, people trying to get a
great seat to see their favorite
bands and acts can avoid wait-
ing in line, Beazley said.
"I think it's a program that
will draw a lot of patrons, n
Beazley said of the Orange
Circle program, as it's been
dubbed. uwe found through
surveys done in the past two
years, in particular, that our
patrons would prefer reserved
• seating. So, it's more out of
customer convenience."
The remaining seats will
still be free with paid admis-
sion, he said.
And there's another advan-
tage to staging just one perfor-
mance nightly.
"We hit a ceiling before
because there were some per-
formers who only wanted to
perform one show and not
two," he said.
The move didn't make any
difference this year in drawing
acts, but that doesn't mean it
won't help in the future, he
said.
For the most part, Beazley
"The 9 p.m. Tuesday shows
and those weekday sh ows
weren't packed anyway,• he .
said.
If, for w hatever reason,
shows do sell out and patrons
are left outside the gates, they
won 't necessarily be unable to
see the show from afar, Beaz-
ley pointed out. Two large
screens will be set up along-
side the stage and will proba-
bly be tilted so those outside
can see them, he said. t'

Orarige Coast Interfaith Shelter,
one <X only two emergency shel-
~ in the county, celebrated its
20th anniversary Tuesday.
The shelter provides emer-
gency housing and transitional
programs for the homeless.
"This was the first family
shelter in Orange County and
the first of a series of interfaith
shelters that are not faith-
based, • said Sheri Barrios, the
shelter's executive director. "It
started because there was a
need. When it first started, we

directed the county executive
office in December to begin
hammering out a proposal to
extend the airport's 1985 set-
tlement agreement past its
2005 expiration date.
For his part, Cox has
stayed mum about his role in
the process. Several calls to
the congressman's office
were not returned.
Cox may1not have a direct
role in the process, but he has
been kept abreast of the sta-
tus of the talks by Council-
woman Norma Glover.
"One of the things I have
tried to do is brief him,"
Glover said. "It's very impor-
tant that be know what's hap-
pening.•
Both Proctor and Glover,
while not directly at the nego-
tiating table, sit on the city's
ad hoc committee that moni-
tors the situation.

people to be homeless, Barrios

Linda Lefler, one of many
who have used the shelter since
it opened, said she became
homeless when the place where
she worked closed and she Jost·

"The shelter helped me by
giviiig me a stable place to live
instead of moving from motel
to motel." Lefler said. "I have a
15-year-old, and we were going
from motel to motel. Now he is
able to go to one school. It real-
ly gave me the stability I was
looking for. Not having to worry
debate, it is still unclear what,
if anything, he could do to
speed up the process.
"At this point in time, the
issue is too broad,· Proctor
said. "There are so many
facets that it's hard (to find) a
political solution. It's not
something a piece of legisla-
tion can solve.•
Cox, as the fifth-highest
ranking member of the
House of Representatives,
could wield his considerable.

Aviation Administration,
among other agencies. But
officials said the parties at the
table haven't reached that
stage.
In the coming months, the
city and county -once they
hammer out a deal -will

of any proposed restrictions at

program for a month, and I'm
trying to find a job. I don't know
what I would have done without
them. I'm a single father, and l
needed help for me and my

vide this as a thank-you to all
our volunteers and the organi-
zations we work with. And I
hope it will be an educational
experience for members of the
community.•

A new method for exercise has come to Corona dd Mar. Darlene
Lara, RN, DC, has established Sante Pilates Studio. Pilatcs is an
exercise program based on a method dcvdopcd by Joseph Pit.ates.
The program is a total body conditioning method with an
emphasis on developing strong core mwdcs in the abdominal,
gluteal, lumbar and shoulder girdle muscles. It facilitates overall
functional form.
Each exercise uses the body's resistance to strengthen and

Costa Mesa police con-
firmed Monday that a jaw-
bone a man found in his
backyard · came from a
human.
The bone was discovered
Sunday in the 1900 block of
Federal Avenue when the
resident was preparing to lay
a concrete deck in his back-
yard, said Costa Mesa Police
Lt. Dale Birney. '

After tests. the Orange
County coroner determined

to open the third. Rory McKeever
singled him to third and he scored on

Senior third baseman Eric Snell
whacked a solo home run, his fifth
of the season, to put CdM up, 2-0, in

under the weather heading into
Tuesday's Pacifi c Coast League
matchup with Northwood. Needless
to say, the Mustangs' 6-1 loss to the
Trmberwolves didn't do much to help
that cause.

they clutched up m all areas of the
game and we didn't,· Bauermeister
said. "They got the key tuts, the key
defensive plays and threw the key
strikes. They just beat us, plain and
simple.·
