I just wanted to thank you ror all the smiles that you gave-me. I wasn't in your rude of friends. I was just a silly freshman, but you always had a special smile for me. Your smile warmed my heart like a sunbeam. I will never forget the day we met. You saw me on tbe football field after cheer practice and asked your sister, Karen, to introduce us. I was so shocked. Me, a very shy, goofy, little freshman. Maybe it was my shyness. I guess we had that in common. But, I was like; "No way, why would 1HE Andre Stewart, star football player, Mr. Hottle.with a body, want to meet me?" You shook my band and saJd, "Whaz up, l<lnll. it is so nice to meet you." .Of course, l was speech- less. It didn't matter if you were with your friends or alone. you always took the time out to notice me and give me that special smile of fOurs. Your sweetnes8 gave me so much inspfration and con· fidence. You told me after I didn't make cheer not to let my shyness stop me. "You've got the moves, keep trying. Don't give up." I will try. School's hard enough, but recently there have beert days when I've felt that I had no Criends. Those were the days our paths always seemed to magically cross. Sometimes your smile was the only one I got all day. There was one day that l .,, felt my world had been-lipped in two: You smiled and told me not to look so lonely, that it would be better. Ernst, a .Costa Mesa resident and third-year golf pro, didn't start play- ing until age 16. _ A former Ocean View High and Golden West College basketball play- er, the 6-foot-6 Ernst dropped hoops and beaded out .to the desert for golf training. Working in the caddie program at Bighorn Golf Club in' Palm Desert, Ernst enjoyed playing privileges for 1112 years a.rtd boned his skills at the exclusive club, then played two years at Long Beach City College, before turning pro. - A three-year starter under Ocean View basketball coach Jim Harris (1988 through '90) before picking up the clubs on a full-lime basis, Ernst had only played Newport Beach Country Club three times prior to bis victory Monday at the Newport Beach Open. Ernst carded a 5-under-pa.r 65 and won $2,000 cash, plus a watch worth $4,000, according to Jeff Parker, Director of Operations for the event's host -the Newport Harbor Area Chamber of Commerce. 1n last year's Newport Beach ·open, Ernst shot 1-under 70 and finished one stroke behind champion Perry Parker. TWo years ago when Ernst coached golf at Newport Ha,fbor High, be played nine-hole practice rounds •a couple of times,• but that was his only previous experience on the course, wtiich played 6,584 yards from the blue tees for the 60-plus pros who competed for the $10,000 purse. ,. On the back nine. Ernst made MIN'S GOLF birdie at 13, but tus highlight came on the par-5 No. 15 (492 yards) when he hit a 5-iron to within six feet -his shot of the day -and made the putt for eagle. On the par-3 13, Ernst's shot off the tee landed 18 inches away from the flag. ' · . No. 18 at Newport Beach, normal- ly a par-5 hole, was shortened to a par-4 because of construction of. the gTeen. . Ernst is the course-record bolder at Meadow Lake Golf Course in Escon- dido (63) Following Ernst on the leader- board was Newport Beach's Eric Woods, who shot 4-under 66 and earned $1,300. Woods, whose practice time has been limited because of a full-time commitment to operating a packag- ing business started by his late father, made six birdies and two bogeys.
