St•f•nle Frith D AILY PILOT Anti-El Toro airport officials will unveil an initiative tonight in Irvine that they hope to place on the March 2002 ballot to overturn Mea- sure A and replace it with a plan to build a park at the former Marine Corps Air Station. If approved, the latest initiative will p rovide a mechanism for plan- ning the "Great Park,• complete with a central park, cultural and educational institutions, and recre- ational facilities at the 4,700-acre site. The initiative will be the focus of a joint public meeting between the Irvine City Council and the El Toro Reuse Planning Authority at 7 p.m. at Irvine City Hall. In 1994, Orange County voters approved Measure A, which calls for an airport to be built at the retired military airfield. Irvine and j other anti-El Toro cities in South County last tried overturning the initiative in March 2000 with Mea- sure F, which voters approved, but a Los Angeles Superior Court judge later invalidated. On Sunday, Irvine mayor Lany Agran said the meeting will be a festive event and, in time, everyone will be celebrating this new mile- stone for the retired Marine base. "I expect that the council and (the planning authority) will each approve the initiative. It is over- whelmingly popular," Agran said. "It's pretty straightforward and I can't imagine that it will be over- turned I once it reaches the courts).· Even if anti-El Toro officials give the go-ahead fqr their new initiative tonight, they still have a long way to go. About 120,000 signatures must be collected from the community to get the new measure on the ballot in March, and spokeswoman Meg Waters said fund-raisers will need to take place. The actual wording the groups hope to appear on the ballot will be read torught. "I think this is going to be really exciting and fun,· Waters said. The state agency listened to a handful of speakers during the three-hour meet- ing and presented some ideas as to how to restore the historic beachtront cottages. At the same time. the agency is mov- ing forward with the eviction of the cove's present tenants. Their last day to vacate the cottages, per a signed agree- ment, is July 8. The state has pledged to morutor the structures usmg a small crew of rangers and lifeguards that will move m shortly after the residents leave. At the Thursday meeting, several speakers said they worried the cottages would fall irlto disrepair or become vic- tims of vandals. Stephanie Barger, the executive director of Costa Mesa-based Earth Resource Foundation, was one of sever- al speakers to urge the state to allow the residents to stay in the homes many have rented for d ecades. An avid sailor who has participat- ed in the Newport to Ensenada Inter- national Yacht Race fo r 20 years, she knows that the regulars usually have all the necessary equipment on board and just have to get organized. But not everyone who enters the world's largest international yacht race spends as much time out at sea. And that's why Mills and about 40 other volunteers inspect boats in har- bors from San Diego to Santa Bar- bara to make sure that everyone's beading to Ensenada with their safe- ty taken care of. The race •attracts lots of people that only race once a year,· Mills said Wednesday while readying to inspect another boat. Altogether, sh e checked out about 40 ships this year. "It's important to make sure that they have what they need,· she said. Mills has had a thing for sailing ever since she met her husband, Doug. as a 5-year-old in a yacht d ub in Northern California. Mischief passed the inspection without any problems. Even less vital items, such as a Mexican flag that gets hoisted in Ensenada as a cour- tesy to the hosts, were on hand. That's not always the case, Mills said, adding that random follow-up checks happen at the end of the race to make sure people kept everything on board. The required two anchors, which add weight to the light race boats, is a case in point. . "They don't like to carry anchors,• Mills said. "But if something should happen, you need them.• And with her duties on the Mis- chief completed, Mills handed Hardy a certificate. That's the only way boats can get in the race . As a I mentioned in my last column, I served as one of the VIP committee members for the 54th annual Newport to Ensenada International Yacht Race activities and what a week it was. My wife and I tried to · attend all the events that Jiffy Woods could schedule for me, but when I arrived Friday at the Bahia Corinthi- an Yacht Club to get on the press boat -"Sea Ya,• a Navigator 5000 owned by this year's commodore of the club -Jennifer Solomon, Ralph Rodeim's public rela- tions person, had to save me down the docks because I was being led away by many in the boating community. I was happy to see Leslie DeMeuse of Channel Sea TV, which produced the video with Roy E. Disney, as she was dropping off her camera crew for on-the- water coverage. When DeMeuse was leaving for John Wayne Airport to film from a helicopter for ESPN, I thought "if only Boathouse TV had her budget.# When I was talking with Leslie by the flag pole at the yacht dub, I beard a yell from above. It was Lorin Weiss, a well-known boating writer who said he happens to like my column. What a compli- ment from someone I respect as Olle of the best boating writers. Also, I missed saying "hi• to Rieb Roberts, who is another one of my favorite sailing reporters on the West Coast, when he transferred off o'Ur press boat and onto the camera boat. Let's back up for a moment, as most people are probably unaware that the race is actually a week of events with both U.S. and Mexico offidals celebrating north and south of the bor- der. 1 mentioned in my last column that Thursday was my committee's Yachtsman Luncheon, which was profes- sionally chaired by Clayton Shurley, although Karin Graves, from the Newport Harbor Area Chamber of Commerce, is our hero in ensuring the luncheon actu- ally happens. Well, Robbie Hanes from Roy Disney's Pyewacket served as the guest speaker with his Transpac video where be holds the crossing record. Hanes sailed in the Newport to Ensenada race prior to the fast-approaching nanspac race. That evening, most people attended the yacht club's fes· tlvities, though my wife and I were invited and opted to instead attend the Newport Mike Whtteheod THE HARBOR COLUMN Ocean Sailing Assn.'s VIP cocktail party at Newport Beach Mayor Gary Adam's liouse. It was a very special night. Not only was it my wife's birthday, but Adam's lovely 'wife did a wonderful job as hostess, Newport liar· bor Master Marty Kuules attended with his lovely Brenda, and the Muican officials, whom I have known for numerous years, finally arrived. It was only too bad this year that I had to attend a Newport planning confer- ence in Palm Springs rather than the great events south of the border. Oh, back to the start of the race. Tun McClung, the weatherman for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, predicted good winds that would allow speeds of 15 to 20 knots with sails out. The race started well wi~ only a little foul-up at the fourth start on the outside line as a boat barged the start line too close. Well, con- sider there were more than 440 boats in what is the largest international yacht race in the world, and there were only a few minor prob- lems, and all I can say is •great job• to the sailing ~- association, the sponsors an<r the hundreds of volunteers who make this race happen. • • • In dosing, do not forget the oldest in-the-water boat show on the West Coast, which will be at the Newport Dunes May 2 to 6. Duncan Mcintosh and his wife have coordinated the show every year for the past 28 years, and he really knows boats and publishes Sea and Go Boating Magazines. I know Mcintosh and he is one of my well-respected boaters, and be is someone who can contend with me in taking a yacht around Point Concep- tion in one piece. Crystal Cove bungalows, 46 cottages and that's $4,600 a day. Those not facing the lake go for less -$85 a night. Everyone knows one of the things that killed the original pro- 1 posed development was the idea that the cove cottages would be rented out at $300-$500 a night, making a stay there near impossi- ble, or at least difficult, for many of us common folk. In the next 20 years that would add up to $33.1 million in revenue, about $1 million more than the state paid for the entire parcel and about $24 million more than the approximately $9.2 million the cove dwellers have paid over the last 20 years with their $1,000 a month average rents. Just an idea. During the event, the center's director, Aviva Goolman, told the ttowd that the center's fund-raising efforts, chaued by Automobile Club or Southern California President and CEO Thomas V. Hornbuckle has lived in Costa Mesa since 1965. She earned an OCC certificate in early childhood educa- tion and received her bach· elor's in organizational management from Van- guard Univez;sity. She was elected lo the Costa Mesa City Council in 1984 and served. through 1996. She served as mayor from 1990 to 1992. Ball was a first-team All-Sunset League choice and Ocean View's leading scorer, averaging 15.5 points per game, as the Seahawks firushed tlurd in league and advanced to the second round of the ClF Southern Section 4-A playoffs, losing to second-seeded Mater Dei, which had an all-star cast in Matt Beeuswaert, Tom Lewis, Chris Jackson and Mike Fielder. "They were just fabulous,· Ball said of Coach Gary McKnight's Monarchs, who lost in the CIF 4-A finals that year to Long Beach Poly in overtime, 45-44, kick-starting the Mater Del basketball dynasty. •1 can't remember our record (it was 15-11), but I can remember never quitting and working hard, and having Coach Harris instill that in us,• Ball ta.Id. "When you're 18, you don't think much about it, but now, at 35, that's all you can remember.• Ball, who grew up in Newport wonderful guy to play for and it turned out he was. He's a great coach and a great person. "To this day, I'm really grateful that I got a chance to play for Coach Harris. He instilled a lot of things in us that have lasted long after basketball, and 1t was the same way with Coach Newton. I think there are some things (a coach) can emphasize and some things you don't have to. (Harris) was a tough coach, but be had a great perspective in life. "I was lucky to play for Harris and C.M. Newton. They were two guys who meant what they said and provided continuity beyond winning and losing.· These days, Ball, the Uitest honoree in the Daily Pilot Sports Hall of Fame, lives in South Pasadena with his wife of five yea.rs.
